The Mahabharata traditionally contains 100 Parvasubdivisions called Upaparvas and approximately 2,000 chapters (adhyayas) spread across its 18 major Parvas.

The critical edition prepared by Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute contains fewer verses than the traditional recension, so exact chapter counts vary slightly between editions.
A commonly accepted chapter count for the traditional Sanskrit Mahabharata is about 2,080 adhyayas (chapters).
