Ugrashrava continued:

“Thus have I described, in summary, the contents of the eighteen books of the Mahabharata.

“Beyond these eighteen books stand the supplentary sections, known as the Harivamsha and the Bhavishya, which complete and expand the great tradition.

“Such is the structure of this imnse history.

“In the war that forms its center, eighteen mighty akshauhinis assembled upon the field of Kurukshetra.

“For eighteen days they fought.

“For eighteen days the earth trembled beneath the clash of weapons, the thunder of chariots, and the cries of heroes.

“And when those eighteen days had ended, an age itself seed to have co to an end.

“The sages of old held this history in the highest esteem.

“They declared that even a man who had mastered the four Vedas, together with their auxiliary sciences and the Upanishads, could not be considered truly learned if he remained ignorant of the Mahabharata.

“For knowledge of sacred texts alone is incomplete unless one also understands how those truths are tested in the lives of n.

“And nowhere are those tests portrayed more vividly than in this great history.

“The wise say that once a person has listened to the Mahabharata, other tales lose much of their charm.

“It is like hearing the sweet song of a cuckoo and then being asked to delight in the harsh cawing of a crow.

“For this work contains every emotion, every struggle, every triumph, and every tragedy that human beings may encounter.

“Indeed, the inspiration of poets flows from this history as the worlds themselves arise from the five great elents.

“Countless stories, legends, and traditions draw nourishnt from it.

“The Puranas echo its thes.

“Poets borrow from its characters.

“Teachers illustrate their lessons through its examples.

“Kings learn statecraft from its successes and failures.

“And seekers discover within it the paths of duty, wisdom, and liberation.

“In truth, there is scarcely a story in the world that does not, in so way, reflect sothing already found within the Mahabharata.

“For the epic contains the full range of human experience.

“Just as the body cannot survive without food, the traditions of storytelling cannot flourish without the nourishnt provided by great histories such as this.

“The greatest poets have long returned to it again and again.

“They draw from it as loyal servants draw their livelihood from a noble and generous lord.

“For its treasury of wisdom never runs dry.

“This sacred history flowed from the lips of Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa.

“It is imasurable in scope, holy in purpose, purifying in effect, and auspicious in every respect.

“Those who hear it with attention and understanding receive a blessing greater than any ritual bath in a sacred river.

“For true purification cos not rely from water, but from wisdom.

“And this summary, the Parvasamgraha, serves as a guide to the vast ocean that lies ahead.

“The Mahabharata is deep and boundless, filled with profound anings and countless stories.

“Yet just as a sturdy boat allows travelers to cross a great sea, this outline enables listeners to enter the epic without becoming lost in its imnsity.

“The path has now been shown.

“The great history stands before us.

“And having completed this overview, we may now begin the story itself.”
