TESSA
Her eyes widened. "Dance? Right now? How about our drinks?"
"Yes! We dance now and drink later... Before anyone dares breathe on you!" I grabbed her hand, and she laughed, letting herself be pulled toward the dance floor.
The lights flashed in waves of gold and violet, cutting through the haze as the bass throbbed like a living heartbeat. Reina’s laughter brushed my ear—light, careless—and before I could stop myself, my hand slid to her waist.
She didn’t pull away.
Her body moved against mine, soft and deliberate, every sway syncing with the rhythm, every touch a small, electric sin. I could feel the warmth of her skin through her dress, the sa short and see through dress I had picked for her, the curve of her hips pressing into when she spun back around.
The crowd was a blur, a heartbeat of strangers, but all I could feel was her.
The scent of her shampoo mixed with the whiskey on her breath. Sweet. Sexy. Addictive.
"Having fun?" I managed, my voice low, almost lost beneath the music.
She laughed, tossing her hair back, her eyes catching the strobe light just long enough to steal my breath. "For once tonight," she said, grinning as she nodded her head. "Yes. Yes, I’m having fun, Tess."
Cute. She’s so cute.
I fucking love it when she said my na just like that. And when she looked at like this, like I was the only one in this crowded place, I wanted to sink on one knee and ask her to be my girlfriend. Mine.
Fuck! If only I didn’t want to risk our friendship, I would have done it for years.
"Stop thinking so hard and loosen up." Reina yelled over the music, it was no doubt she was enjoying herself. Unlike who couldn’t get out of her own head.
Her body rolled to the beat again, brushing mine. My fingers twitched. I wanted to keep her there, keep her close, keep her away from every pair of eyes that dared to look.
But they were looking. They always were.
n around us lingered too long—watching the way she moved, the way her dress rode higher when she spun. Every glance made sothing hot and sharp coil in my chest.
Sohow I couldn’t head but bla myself for it. It was my fault for making her wear this sexy dress.
I leaned in, lips near her ear. "I’ll be back," I said, before I did sothing stupid. "My throat is dry I need a drink."
"Alright. Don’t take too long this is your favorite song. Be back before they change it." She nodded, still moving, still lost in the music, the lights, the laughter.
"Yeah, I can’t leave you on your own for long. Who knows what you might do without here to watch over you." I smirked.
I pushed through the bodies until the air cooled, my pulse refusing to settle. All I wanted to do was get to the bar before I lose my goddamn mind.
My throat burned for sothing to drown it all, so I ordered a drink—then another. The ice clinked against the glass, mocking with its calm.
From where I stood, I could still see her. Dancing. Smiling. The strobe lights painted her in fragnts—hips, lips, the glint of sweat on her neck. I could almost feel her again, the ghost of her body pressed to mine, teasing the edge of sothing I couldn’t touch.
And then I saw the looks. n circling like moths to fla. One brushed past her too close, his hand grazing her arm. My grip tightened around my glass until it cracked slightly, ice and whiskey spilling onto my knuckles.
I couldn’t stand it.
I grabbed the first girl near —dark hair, loud laugh, big eyes that didn’t matter. I pulled her against , forcing myself to feel sothing else. Her perfu hit too strong, her mouth too eager. But when I kissed her, I wasn’t kissing her.
It was Reina’s taste I was chasing. Reina’s mouth. Reina’s fire.
When I pulled away, the girl blinked at , dazed. "What was that for?"
I smiled faintly, hollow. "Nothing."
She disappeared back into the flashing lights. I leaned on the bar, breathing hard, eyes searching until I found Reina again. She was still laughing, still glowing, still free.
And I hated that freedom almost as much as I loved her for it.
I lifted my glass again, whispering to no one.
"God, please help . Help keep my hands to myself."
Because I couldn’t. Not without breaking sothing sacred.
"I think I should get back to her now." I muttered to myself, and before I could even drag my legs and my sorry ass back to her, I caught sight of soone at the entrance.
A man, absurdly tall and hot, clad in that black suit and black coat, his eyes darting everywhere as if he was looking for soone. Even though I hadn’t t him before, he seed awfully familiar and God, I hated him.
Before I could move, I saw a faint smile on his face. He was staring at soone but I didn’t know who. So I tried to be nosy, I traced his line of vision and they fucking landed on Reina. My Reina.
"Is that him?" I whispered to myself, my drink slipping from my fingers and I could hear the shattering sound when the glass hit the ground. "Is that the man who had been touching her? The man... Her father-in-law? The one Shane saw last night?"
I shook my head, ready to get back to the dancefloor and drag Reina out of this place, to hide her away from this man. But I was just too late. He moved before I do.
And I didn’t need anyone to tell I can never drag Reina with this man.
