I am absentmindedly watching the sa fox docuntary for what feels like the fourteenth ti. Stroking Boo’s hair as she is letting be close for once. Not that she is as afraid as before, but they also don't let touch them as much as Cierra is allowed to. Not that I mind, as long as they have soone they can feel safe with.
Magenta is making sothing in the kitchen, but the lack of any sll gives no clue as to what it is. Daisy is laying on the couch with us, her big head on my lap as she is still keeping a close watch on Shinobu.
“Hostiles have breached the elevator and are taking it up to the penthouse. Keep the offspring safe!” Crow suddenly shouts out in our ntal space. Making sit up straight, my digital heart beating in my chest, Crow had sounded almost panicked, which was more emotion than I had ever heard her produce before.
I open the files Crow has sent , quickly scanning the profiles of the people in the elevator and start to frown. These were not kind people. I quickly pick up Shinobu, making her eyes go wide in panic.
“We have trouble. Can you take the kids and hide in Cali’s room? Let see if I can scare them off.” I say to Magenta, giving her the child.
“Are you sure you don’t want to take care of it?” Magenta asks, looking also slightly concerned.
I think about it for a second, but then shake my head. I did not have my physical body here, so I was not much use in a fight, but if there was one, I wanted Magenta as close to the children as I could get her. “No, it’s fine."
Magenta nods, taking the little redhead into the hall and further away from the elevator.
I turn to the kitchen. I did not plan on this becoming a fight, but might as well be prepared. I grab our sharpest kitchen knife and hide it in the arm of my hologram body.
It does not take long for the elevator to ding open and a group of ard n to walk into my house. Their equipnt does not look particularly cheap, and so of the pieces even look like they might have belonged to a samurai at so point.
I cross my arms as I frown at them. “You are not welco here; leave now.”
“Oh, co on, pretty thing, we are just here to look around and don't an any harm.” The frontmost man sneers at .
“This is my ho, and I told you that you are not welco here. I have already called security and the police,” I say, already feeling a hot rage burn in my chest.
“And how are they going to get here? The elevator is blocked?” The man says, pointing at a device that is in the lift opening. “So you can either step aside and make this easy, or you can be in the way and make this hard.” The man finishes licking his lips, making happy that I am just a hologram; otherwise, I might have to clean my vomit out of the carpet.
I slowly sigh, “Does that usually work? What kind of two bit bandits are you?”
“Bandits?” the guy says, sounding surprised. “We are not bandits; we are the Nachtwächter Netzwerk.”
“I honestly was not asking for your gang na nor do I care all that much, but I am sure to inform the people downstairs about it.” I say with a smile. “You know, the people that don’t really need a reason to go on a rampage.”
“You’re a spicy lady, but we are not afraid of them. Our bosses are a lot scarier than they are.” The man says taking a step forward.
I do the sa, feeling the ice slowly grow in my veins. The man did not seem to expect this; his eyes go wide as he stumbles a bit. I make the kitchen knife reappear in my hand and stab the guy in the neck as hard as I can.
The sound of breaking glass can be hurt as the armour stops the knife in its track, shattering my holographic hand. The knife drops to the floor with a tallic clank as both of us look at it.
“You know, that went better in my head,” I point out.
The man grunts, pulling back and punching my holographic head. I dismiss the hologram and make it reappear behind him and kick up between his legs as hard as I can, only to be t with the sa result as my foot and part of my leg shatter.
I frown again. “You know this does not seem fair. Can we get a referee in here or sothing?”
The man turns around looking furious as they snarl at . “You need about twenty more of yourself to make this a fair fight.”
I snap my fingers. “Oh, why didn’t I think of that?” With a bit of thought, I make more holographic copies of myself appear around the room.
“What the fuck.” I hear one of the n mutter and I smile, let's ss around just a bit.
I keep my body perfectly still but turn my head a perfect 180 degrees. I do the sa with the other bodies, turning their heads at unnatural angles. “What, it was his suggestion.” I say in unison with all the bodies at the sa ti.
The people behind take a step back as they look around, unsure. I use that mont to move all the other bodies in an attempt to beat down the first guy. He tries to punch around the holograms, shattering them on contact to only be reford again once his fist leaves.
I look at the chaos with a kind of bird's-eye view. I tried looking through all the different eyes at once, but that just gave a headache, so I had to use so, let's say unconventional tactics. There was still one problem, however. This might keep them occupied for a while, but the lack of damage ant that it was not really getting rid of them. And once they realized there was not much weight behind anything I could do, they might run straight through instead.
“What is going on over here?” a confused voice asks.
I turn my attention back into the room, spotting a white-haired fox woman walking through the sliding door from the balcony into the living room. Her long tail perked up in curiosity.
I shrug. “Burglars are getting more audacious by the day.”
Mom looks between the different people who have all frozen in confusion. “I see, what do you want to do with them?”
“Don’t know. I want them out of my house, but for the rest, I don’t care so feel free to play with them” I say, at the sa ti sending the fox a quick ssage that I would rather prefer it if she kept them all alive since I was going to use them for a statent later.
The fox pauses for a second, then starts sporting a vicious grin. The next second goes by in a blur as all the n disappear and everything goes quiet. I dismiss all the extra bodies and pause, looking around for a bit. After making sure there was no one left, I grab the device that was blocking the elevator and kick it inside. Soone at PsyCo can take a look at it if they feel like it. For now, I just wanted a little break.
I slowly walk over to Cali’s room and knock on the door. “Coast is clear. Grandma took the baddies away.
The door opens, revealing Magenta who looks a bit tired, but is smiling nonetheless. “Are you okay?”
I blink, “I am fine, not a real body rember.”
Nonon now also walks into the door opening, covered in a big puffy blanket. “Are they gone?”
I smile softly at her, bending down and picking her up to hold the sick little girl in my arms. “Yeah, don’t worry. We promised that we would always protect you.” I say as I walk back into the living room.
Sitting on the couch in the living room is a perfectly unscathed fox girl. Nonon seems to perk up slightly upon seeing her. Her icy eyes locked on her.
“I am sorry, mom, that we can’t be the best host. The children are rather sick.” I explain as I sit down on the couch, Nonon still in my arms.
“That's… Why I'm here.” The old lady says in so kind of strange voice for so reason. “Magenta inford , and I am here to help.”
“How?” I ask, quite unsure.
“Being a Vanguard is a pathway to many abilities, so consider to be… Unnatural. aning it lets them have specialised nanites to help deal with the situation.” Luna explains.
I blink. “That is possible?”
“Yeah, it's just expensive?” the fox says, giving a look.
I shrug. “Take it out of my inheritance then,” I say with a big grin.
Mom sighs, “It’s not about the price, just wanted to show you what can be achieved if you save your points.”
“All points spent were to protect my life.” I defend myself. “You can’t take points with you into the grave.”
The fox sighs, “Fine, just give a quick mont and we have the kiddos happy and healthy again. And after we've made sure nobody is dying, I'll go arrange a eting with those idiot's boss, wanna co?”
“Nah you have fun with that on your own. I need to select a good bedti story.” I say with a smile. “I am sure you got this”
