Elara POV

“We are so fucked,” Axel whispers as we stare at the glowing eyes following us. Kane slapped on the roof and told Mason to speed up, and he did, but it did not seem to help much.

“What do you think will happen first?” Kane asks Axel. “Are we running out of gas or are they running out of energy?”

“Well, that depends on whether they catch us before either happens,” Axel shrugs.

“Guys, cut it out, I need to think,” I grunt, finding a seat and not taking my eyes off the glowing orbs following us.

“Do you have an idea?” Kane asks hopefully.

“You ripped that wolf apart, but it lived,” I mutter, more to myself than to them. “Which ans they are immortal like vampires. They can’t be killed like wolves. Does that an they won’t tire like wolves?”

“Ah, shit,” Axel mutters, pinching his nose bridge.

There is a loud thud, and the truck lowers as if sothing heavy dropped onto it.

“What the fuck?” Kane frowns, protectively putting his arm around my shoulders.

“Sorry,” Braden appears in front of us. “I had to run past them, and if they saw , well ... you know. So, I stayed invisible until I could get onto the truck.”

“Do you think they have power like and you?” I ask, looking at Braden. “I an, they started as hybrids.”

“Doubtful,” he exhales deeply. “From what I’ve gathered, the Council concentrated on strength, speed and immortality. They did not put ti and effort into developing anything else. Plus, they took the hybrids before or when they turned eighteen. Most of the hybrids didn’t even know they had powers.”

“And to answer your question, Elara,” Braden continues. “You’re right, they can’t be killed in the traditional ways. A vampire’s bite won’t work; they’re immune to our venom. They’re mostly wolf, so that’s out of the question. But everything has a kryptonite. Even immortals.”

“Can we solve the mystery later?” Axel asks, irritated. “I an, if we survive this.”

“You’re right,” I nod. “We don’t have to kill them now; we only need to get away.”

I look at the road ahead of us, searching for the biggest tree I can find. I summon the wind, concentrating on the ground around the tree. Once we pass the tree, I blow the tree over, right on top of the monsters, blocking the road.

“It won’t kill them, but it will buy us ti,” I say, staring at the tree, waiting to see if the monsters break through. Mason turns onto the highway just as the pair of glowing eyes erges from the tree.

I hold my breath as I watch it co closer. I am out of ideas to get us out of this ss.

“Well, look at that,” Kane sighs, relieved. “They stopped right at the highway.”

“Too many humans,” Braden says. “The Council can’t afford for them to be seen. But that might change once they are satisfied with their subjects’ developnt.”

“Thank Goddess, this is over for now,” I exhale deeply.

“I couldn’t agree more,” Axel groans.

“Wait,” Braden frowns. “Why is Mason turning off the highway?”

“It’s the way ho,” Kane replies.

“You can’t go there!” Braden shouts with wide eyes. “Those things got your scent. It’s only a matter of ti before they find you.”

“With that argunt, we can’t go anywhere,” I reason.

“Human settlents,” Braden replies. “Even if they track you there, they won’t do anything.”

I thoughtfully look at Kane and Axel, and they shrug. Honestly, there is not much else we can do.

Kane leans over and knocks on the truck’s roof, pointing for Mason to pull over. I do not listen as Kane tells Mason to find a motel or say anything when we drive towards the city. My mind is too occupied with what we have seen.

The Council has succeeded, and I am willing to bet good money that if those things shift back, we will recognise so of them as old friends. I have no idea how we are going to kill those things, but I sure as fuck know what we are doing next. We are destroying the facility before they create more.

Everything has a kryptonite.

The words resonate in my mind. Sothing must kill them. Weapons and wounds will not do it. My power of wind only brings damage and destruction, not death. They might drown, but how are we supposed to keep them under long enough to test it? Maybe we should take a page from the mafia, throw them into a block of cent and dump them into the river. Like that would help. They’ll wiggle themselves out before the cent dries.

“Fire,” I whisper, looking at Kane and Axel.

“Where?” Kane asks, stretching his neck and looking for smoke.

“Not where, what!” I reply enthusiastically. “Fire kills everything. Even vampires. Fire can kill the test subjects.”

“That’s a solution with its own set of problems,” Axel replies.

“Don’t be a sour puss,” Kane growls. “It’s the only thing we have.”

“Maybe,” Braden adds. “Fire might work, but it’s not a guarantee. They could be immune to that, too.”

“Impossible,” I say adamantly. “They may or may not feel the pain when the burn, but at so point, the fire will incinerate them if it’s hot enough.”

“That was actually my point,” Axel replies. “Not that it can’t work or that we shouldn’t try it. But the execution will be a bitch.”

“Hey, what’s one more problem?” I shrug. “We’ve co this far.”

“We will revisit this conversation in the morning,” Kane says as Mason parks in front of a motel. “For now, I want to wash the shit off and devour a steak.”
