Elara POV
Mindy babbles nonstop as we travel to et Orson and Hodge, and it gives ti to prepare myself ntally. I will not lie, I am nervous. I vividly rember what happened last ti when I entered the facility, and I am not looking forward to another near-death experience.
But this needs to be done, and I am not afraid to do it. Stopping the Council will be worth it. Nobody will be free or safe, especially hybrids, as long as the Council play mad scientist.
At least Isolde has placed the spell on the cottage, and she will be safe if Mason decides to pay her another visit. And Malachi’s out of state with my family and the kids. That is two fewer things to worry about.
Braden parks the Audi in front of an abandoned warehouse, and instantly, an eerie feeling fills my gut. This place reminds of the ti Anton kidnapped . A door opens, and Orson steps out, waving us over.
“Ready or not, here we go,” Kane grunts, opening his door and holding out his hand to .
“I’m ready,” I smile, accept his hand, and follow everyone inside the warehouse. It takes a second for my eyes to adjust to the darkness, and I am surprised when I notice two more people.
“This is Rex and Danielle,” Orson introduces them. “They’ve been spying on the facility for months now and volunteered that you can use their IDs to enter the facility.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful," I sigh, relieved. “Now we don’t have to kidnap anyone. Thank you for helping. I know you’re taking a huge risk because the Council will hunt you after this.”
“We’re not worried,” Rex shrugs, taking Danielle’s hand. “We sold our belongings and are leaving this place for good.”
“This is yours,” Danielle says, handing her badge and uniform. “This will allow you access to all the prisoners.”
“And this is for you,” Rex hands Mindy his.
“Oh, man, I don’t want to be a boy,” she whines.
“At least you’ll be a pretty boy,” Rex chuckles. “And you’ll get into the control room without difficulty.”
“Kane, you’ll be using mine,” Hodge says, handing everything to him. “I’ll be hiding out with Isolde.”
“Okay,” I say, looking at everybody. “Let’s go. Hopefully, we’re done before lunch.”
Kane POV
srised, I look at my hands. My fingers are shorter and fatter. It is so weird to feel like yourself but not look it.
“This is as far as we can go,” Braden says, parking the car. “We’ll have to walk the rest of the way.”
Everyone gets out, and Axel pulls Elara into his arms.
“Be safe,” he whispers, kissing her lovingly before turning to and shaking my hand.
“I know,” I smile. He does not have to say it. We all know what is at stake. “Warm up your throwing arm and be careful when you throw those bombs.”
Axel nods and watches as the rest of us walk towards the facility. We tossed a coin to decide who would go with Elara and who would stay with the car. It had to be one of us because of our mind link.
“I specifically chose this shift for us because it’s quiet,” Orson explains as we walk to the facility. “The doctors are all gathered in a conference room comparing data. The prisoners are in their cells, resting after the morning tests.”
“How many prisoners are there?” I ask curiously.
“Only fifteen,” he replies morbidly. “Many have passed away, and the rest have been released to Gustav. They’re searching for hybrids everywhere now, because you’re killing them faster than it takes to develop one.”
“Well, good for us,” I smirk.
“Seems they increased security,” Elara says when we reach the gates.
“You have only yourself to thank for that,” Orson chuckles. “They hired more humans after your last stunt.”
“Are the humans aware of what they are guarding?” I ask, frowning. “Because I would hate to kill them if they are only contract workers.”
“They think they’re guarding a pharmaceutical company working on a cure for cancer,” Orson replies. “But Mindy can order them to stand down from the control room, and they won’t question it. They’re the least of your concerns.”
“I guess getting the prisoners out is going to be a bitch,” Elara sighs.
“Correct,” Orson nods. “Even though the Council has successfully created obedient subjects, all of them react differently to the process. So of them can’t even sit upright, let alone walk or run.”
“Even if I must carry them, we’ll get them into the bunker before the first bomb drops,” I say, determined.
“Okay,” Orson says, looking at his watch. “It’s teati and most personnel are on a break. We should go. Ignore the guards, and don’t greet them. That’s the norm, and everything else would seem suspicious.”
“Ti for to go invisible,” Braden smiles, disappearing before our eyes.
“Shit, that’s just weird,” Orson grunts, shaking his head.
“Boo!” Braden says, and Orson turns around.
“Don’t do that!” He snaps, slapping the air, but Braden is already laughing from behind .
“Cut it out, Braden,” I laugh softly. “We’re wasting valuable ti.
We follow Orson through the gates, and the guards do not even look our way as we let ourselves in with the badges.
“Kane, you rember my directions to the control room?” Orson asks.
“Yup,” I nod. “And I’ll mind link Elara if we get lost.”
“Here goes nothing,” Elara exhales deeply, and we split into two groups.
Mindy and I head for the control room while Orson and Elara walk to the patient area.
“We can do this,” Mindy mumbles beside . “We are only in the belly of the beast, no big deal.”
