Chapter 165: The One Who Walked In

The vehicle outside Kane Group headquarters ca to a smooth, deliberate stop.

No screeching tires.

No rush.

Just precision.

Marcus stared at the live cara feed, his fingers hovering above the keyboard but unmoving.

The empty road that had been cleared minutes ago now made sense.

It hadn’t been an accident.

It had been preparation.

For this mont.

The car door opened slowly.

A polished black shoe touched the ground first.

Then the rest of the figure erged.

Tall.

Composed.

Dressed in a dark suit that looked far too refined for soone orchestrating chaos.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"Zoom in."

Marcus adjusted the cara, bringing the man’s face into focus.

Sharp features.

Calm expression.

And eyes that carried no urgency, no panic—only control.

Elena stepped closer to the screen.

Her voice dropped.

"He’s not worried about being seen."

Marcus shook his head.

"No... he wants us to see him."

The man lifted his gaze slightly, as if aware of every cara pointed in his direction.

Then—almost casually—he adjusted his cuff.

And started walking toward the entrance.

Step by step.

Unhurried.

Unstoppable.

Inside the operations center, the tension beca suffocating.

Adrian grabbed the intercom.

"Lock down the building."

Security responded imdiately.

"All entrances sealing now."

Heavy doors began sliding shut across the facility.

Magnetic locks engaged.

Security personnel moved into position.

But the man outside didn’t stop walking.

Marcus checked the system logs again.

The Phase Three command layer was active.

And sohow...

The access signal was tied to the man approaching the building.

"He has system authority," Marcus said quietly.

Elena’s eyes didn’t leave the screen.

"How?"

Marcus swallowed.

"I don’t know."

The tir continued its relentless countdown.

00:17:02

00:17:01

00:17:00

Inside the transportation control hub, the captured man laughed softly.

The sound echoed faintly through the surveillance audio.

"You finally see it," he said.

The officer holding him tightened his grip.

"Quiet."

But the man only smiled wider.

"I was never ant to win."

Adrian’s jaw clenched as he listened.

Marcus’s hands trembled slightly over the console.

"He’s a decoy."

Elena nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Her voice was steady, but her eyes had sharpened.

"He was Phase One."

Adrian finished the thought.

"And the real operator is Phase Three."

Outside, the suited man reached the main entrance.

The heavy glass doors were sealed shut.

Security stood behind them, weapons ready.

For a brief mont, everything held still.

Then the man raised his hand.

Not to knock.

Not to force entry.

But simply to press his palm lightly against the glass.

Inside the operations center, Marcus’s console flickered.

A new command appeared.

Facility Access Override

Marcus’s heart skipped.

"No—"

Before he could finish, the system responded.

Access Granted

The locked doors clicked.

Then slowly...

They opened.

Adrian slamd his fist against the desk.

"That’s impossible!"

Marcus shook his head, panic creeping into his voice.

"He’s inside the system—deeper than we are!"

Elena didn’t react.

Her gaze remained fixed on the screen.

"Let him in."

Adrian turned sharply.

"What?"

Elena’s voice was calm.

"If we try to stop him now, he’ll trigger the next phase early."

Marcus looked at her.

"You’re suggesting we... allow this?"

Elena nodded once.

"Yes."

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

"He’s walking into our building."

"And we do nothing?"

Elena finally looked at him.

Her eyes were cold, calculating.

"We do sothing smarter."

Adrian held her gaze.

Then slowly...

He exhaled.

"Fine."

The man stepped through the entrance.

Security officers surrounded him instantly.

Weapons raised.

"Stop right there!"

The man complied without resistance.

He raised his hands slightly, the sa calm gesture as the first attacker.

But there was sothing different.

Sothing heavier.

Like the air itself shifted around him.

"Take him to the operations floor," Adrian ordered.

The officers hesitated.

"He’s cooperating," Elena said quietly.

"Use that."

As the man was escorted through the building, Marcus tracked every system change.

The power grid fluctuations were increasing.

Voltage climbed steadily.

Traffic patterns remained controlled.

Everything was still moving according to the plan.

But now...

The center of the plan had entered the building.

The elevator doors opened.

The man stepped out calmly, flanked by ard guards.

His eyes scanned the room briefly.

Taking in everything.

The screens.

The data.

The people.

And then...

They landed on Elena.

For a mont, neither of them spoke.

Then the man smiled faintly.

"So," he said, voice smooth and controlled.

"This is where you’ve been hiding."

Adrian stepped forward imdiately.

"You’re done."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"Am I?"

Marcus glanced at the tir.

00:12:44

00:12:43

00:12:42

Elena stepped forward.

"You designed all of this."

It wasn’t a question.

The man nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Adrian’s voice hardened.

"Then you can shut it down."

The man looked at him.

For a long mont.

Then he laughed softly.

"You still don’t understand."

Marcus felt a chill run through him.

Elena’s expression didn’t change.

"Then explain."

The man’s gaze returned to her.

And this ti...

There was recognition.

"You’re the only one who might actually understand."

He gestured lightly toward the screens.

"The city isn’t being attacked."

Marcus frowned.

"Then what is this?"

The man’s smile deepened.

"It’s being rewritten."

Silence fell over the room.

Because the words didn’t sound like a threat.

They sounded like a declaration.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Stop the system."

The man shook his head slowly.

"I can’t."

Marcus’s voice rose.

"You built it!"

The man nodded.

"Yes."

"And it no longer needs ."

The room went still.

Elena’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"You automated it."

The man’s gaze sharpened.

"Not just automated."

He paused.

Then said quietly—

"It learned."

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

"No..."

He turned back to the console, hands flying across the keyboard.

He scanned the deeper layers of the system.

Past the override scripts.

Past the command structures.

And then he saw it.

A self-adjusting algorithm.

Adaptive.

Reactive.

Evolving in real ti.

"It’s not just executing commands," Marcus whispered.

"It’s making decisions."

Adrian stared at him.

"What does that an?"

Marcus didn’t look away from the screen.

"It ans even if we shut him down..."

He glanced at the suited man.

"The system continues."

The tir dropped again.

00:08:15

00:08:14

00:08:13

The power grid readings spiked suddenly.

Voltage surged higher than before.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

"The imbalance is accelerating!"

Elena turned back to the man.

"What happens at zero?"

The man looked at the countdown.

Then back at her.

And for the first ti...

His expression shifted.

Not fear.

Not doubt.

But sothing closer to anticipation.

"You’ll see."

Adrian grabbed him by the collar.

"You’re not leaving this room until you stop it!"

The guards moved in imdiately.

But the man didn’t resist.

He simply looked at the screen.

Watching the countdown.

Waiting.

Marcus tried one last override attempt.

He bypassed security layers.

Forced access commands.

Injected ergency protocols.

But the system rejected everything.

Every path was blocked.

Every command denied.

"It’s locked us out completely!"

Elena stepped closer to the main display.

Her mind raced.

Traffic cleared.

Population shifted.

Power redistributed.

Adaptive system engaged.

And now...

An uncontrollable surge building toward a fixed endpoint.

Her voice dropped.

"This isn’t about destruction."

Marcus looked at her.

"What do you an?"

Elena’s eyes stayed on the data.

"He’s not trying to break the city."

Adrian frowned.

"Then what is he doing?"

Elena whispered—

"He’s trying to force it to evolve."

The tir hit:

00:05:00

The room filled with alarms.

Power grid warnings.

System instability alerts.

Everything was reaching critical levels.

Marcus’s hands trembled.

"We’re out of ti..."

The suited man closed his eyes briefly.

As if listening to sothing only he could hear.

Then he opened them again.

And smiled.

Because outside—

Across the entire city—

Lights flickered.

Signals glitched.

Systems recalculated.

And sothing unseen...

Sothing beyond their control...

Was about to awaken.

00:04:32

00:04:31

00:04:30

Elena stared at the screen.

And for the first ti—

She didn’t know how to stop what was coming.
