Chapter 27: WHEN TRUST BLEEDS

The morning light spilled gently across the penthouse, but the atmosphere inside remained heavy and breathless, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. Elena stood near the tall window, her back straight, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her blouse. She had barely slept. Adrian’s words from the night before—the coldness in his tone, the suspicion she heard—still clung to her.

Adrian was silent behind her, the kind of silence that forced the blood in her veins to move slower.

She could feel his eyes on her back.

Ever since the confrontation with his father, since the discovery of the mysterious file with Elena’s na on it, the air between them had shifted. Trust, already fragile, now trembled under the weight of secrets neither of them understood.

Elena swallowed.

"Say sothing," she whispered finally.

Adrian didn’t lift his gaze from the docunts spread across his desk. "I said everything I needed to say last night."

Her heart tightened. "You accused without hearing ."

"I didn’t accuse you," he said calmly, but the calmness was worse than anger. "I asked how your na appeared in a confidential investigation my father started years ago. And you refused to answer."

Elena turned, her voice cracking. "Because I didn’t know! I still don’t!"

Adrian finally looked up.

His eyes were darker than usual—stormy, controlled, shadowed by sothing that was not quite anger, not quite doubt, but sowhere painfully in between.

"Elena..." His voice was low, quiet, unreadable. "Every ti I try to protect you, sothing new cos out that blindsides . A new secret. A new danger. A new mystery. I am not angry at you. I am angry at everything surrounding you."

"I didn’t create any of this," she whispered.

"No," he murmured. "But it follows you. And it’s starting to follow too."

Elena’s breath hitched.

It wasn’t rejection he was giving her.

It was fear.

Fear of losing control.

Fear of losing soone he had not planned to care about.

Fear of repeating whatever pain his past had carved into him.

She stepped toward him—slowly, because approaching Adrian when he was this guarded felt like trying to soothe a wild animal.

"Adrian," she said softly. "Look at ."

He didn’t move.

But she knelt beside his chair, gently placing her hand on his. His fingers were cold.

"When I married you," Elena whispered, "I had nothing. No power. No plan. I was alone, scared, and drowning in my own life. I didn’t even expect you to notice . I never plotted anything. I never wanted to hurt you."

His jaw tightened.

A war was happening behind his eyes.

"I know," he said quietly. "That’s the problem."

Elena blinked. "What do you an?"

"You are the only person in my life I don’t know how to read," he murmured. "The only one who can shake my judgnt. The only one who can make question myself."

Her heart skipped.

"You think I want to confuse you?"

"No. But you do," he said, almost tortured. "Without even trying."

Their eyes locked.

And it hit her—he wasn’t doubting her loyalty.

He was doubting his ability to handle how deeply she had begun to affect him.

Before she could respond, Adrian stood from his chair, pulling his hand away gently but firmly.

"We have to head to the hospital," he said, his tone shifting. "Ward called. Lydia woke up."

Elena’s breath caught. "She did?"

"Yes."

"And Marcus?"

Adrian’s expression darkened again. "He hasn’t regained consciousness yet. The doctors are worried."

Elena’s chest tightened with fear. Marcus had shielded her from the attack—risking his own life. She owed him more than she could ever repay.

Adrian grabbed his jacket, then stopped, turning slowly toward her.

"Elena."

"Yes?"

"Stay close to today. No disappearing. No going off alone. I’m not losing you too."

Her stomach fluttered—part fear, part warmth.

She nodded silently.

He didn’t say another word, but his hand reached for hers as they walked out of the penthouse.

And even though he was still conflicted...

He did not let go.

AT THE HOSPITAL

The hospital corridors were cold, sterile, and filled with the faint scent of disinfectant. Lydia’s room was guarded by two of Adrian’s private security agents. As soon as they opened the door, Elena felt Lydia’s eyes land on them.

Lydia was awake but weak, her arm bandaged, her face pale.

"Elena..." Lydia whispered.

Elena hurried to her side. "You’re awake. Thank God."

Lydia looked at Adrian, then at Elena again—her expression strangely tense.

"Elena," Lydia whispered, "there’s sothing I need to tell you... sothing important."

Adrian stepped closer. "What is it?"

But Lydia shook her head, her voice trembling.

"No. Not you. I want to talk to Elena alone."

Adrian froze.

His jaw clenched, but he nodded slowly.

"I’ll be right outside," he said, touching Elena’s shoulder lightly. "If anything feels wrong, call ."

Elena nodded, watching him leave.

The mont the door closed, Lydia’s composure broke.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Elena..." Lydia choked out. "The night we were attacked—I heard sothing. Sothing I wasn’t supposed to hear."

Elena’s blood ran cold. "What did you hear?"

Lydia gripped her hand weakly.

"Elena... the attack wasn’t random."

Her voice shook violently.

"It was ant for you."

Elena’s entire body froze.

Her heartbeat stopped.

Her breath vanished.

And Lydia, trembling, whispered the words that would change everything—

"Elena... soone is hunting you."
