Chapter 36: THE WAR WITHIN THE WALLS

Elena could feel the air in the mansion shift after Lydia’s warning—thick, watchful, heavy with silent hostility. The Kane estate had always been intimidating, but after learning that Adrian’s own father had been digging into her past, every corridor felt colder. Every shadow felt alive.

She woke the next morning with a pounding tension behind her eyes. Sleep had refused to co, and even when she drifted off, nightmares chased her—faceless n trying to pull her away from Adrian... Marcus watching from the corner... Lydia turning her back on her... Adrian fighting a ghost shaped like his father.

By dawn, she was already sitting up, the sheets twisted around her legs.

Her phone buzzed with a new ssage from Marcus.

Her heart stilled.

Marcus: Did you think my warning was a threat? It wasn’t. It was preparation.

Elena dropped the phone onto the bed as if it burned her skin. She didn’t reply. She didn’t have the strength.

A knock ca at the door.

"Elena?" Adrian’s voice. Firm. Controlled. But she could hear the tension beneath. "I’m coming in."

He didn’t wait for permission—he never did.

He opened the door and stepped inside, dressed in a black shirt, sleeves rolled up, hair slightly damp as if he had been running his hands through it all morning. His expression was harsher than usual, but his eyes softened when they landed on her.

"You didn’t sleep," he said.

She didn’t deny it.

"Neither did you," she whispered.

He gave a short, humorless exhale. "My father called."

Her heart dropped. "What did he say?"

"That he wants to ’visit’ soon."

Those words were enough to make her pulse spike. Because for n like his father, a "visit" ant surveillance, pressure, manipulation—war.

Adrian walked closer, and she noticed sothing in his hand.

A file.

He placed it on the bed beside her.

"What’s that?" she asked hesitantly.

"Evidence," he said simply.

Elena froze.

Evidence of what?

Adrian sat down, elbows on his knees, his voice controlled but sharp.

"My father is planning sothing. And I need you to see what we’re dealing with so you can protect yourself."

She swallowed hard and opened the file.

Her breath caught imdiately.

It was a docunt—cold, clinical, stamped with the Kane Corporation seal.

Termination Proposal — Marital Contract Nullification

Target: Elena Rowan Kane

Her vision blurred for a mont.

"He submitted this?" she whispered.

"No," Adrian said quietly. "He drafted it. And he’s waiting for the right scandal to force to sign it."

Her stomach churned. "But... why scandal?"

"Because that’s the only way to invalidate the contract without damaging his reputation," Adrian said. "He’s trying to uncover sothing that makes you look unfit. Or dangerous. Or... cheap."

The word hit her like a stab.

Elena’s hands trembled.

Adrian’s voice softened. "Elena... look at ."

She forced herself to raise her head.

"I won’t let him touch you," he said. "I won’t let him define you. And I sure as hell won’t let him decide my marriage."

Her heart ached painfully—because she believed him. Against every reason, she believed him.

But fear still curled inside her. "What do we do?"

Adrian hesitated—just long enough for her to know he’d been thinking about this all night.

"There’s another problem," he said.

She closed the file, her breath shaky. "Lydia?"

"No." His eyes darkened. "Marcus."

Her stomach twisted.

"What now?" she whispered.

Adrian clenched his jaw, then handed her a printed screenshot of Marcus’s latest public social dia post.

Elena read it—and her blood went cold.

"So bonds break on their own. So need a little pressure. Let’s see which one this is."

No nas.

No details.

But the comnts were already blowing up with speculation about "the billionaire rivalry" and "Adrian Kane’s marriage."

Elena’s voice was barely a whisper. "He’s trying to provoke you."

"He wants a war." Adrian stood and paced slowly. "A public one, where any move I make looks like aggression."

Elena hugged her arms around herself. "Adrian... I’m scared."

He stopped instantly and turned toward her. "Co here."

She rose from the bed, and he stepped forward, his hands cupping her face as if he were afraid she might break.

"Listen to carefully," he said, his voice low and commanding. "You are safe with . No one—not Marcus, not my father, not anyone—gets to touch you."

Her eyes stung with heat she didn’t want him to see.

"But Adrian... you’re fighting too many enemies at once."

"I’ve fought bigger wars alone," he murmured. "But this ti—"

He paused, searching her face.

"—I’m not alone."

The words wrapped around her chest, both strengthening and terrifying her.

A loud crash suddenly echoed through the hallway.

Both of them turned sharply.

Adrian’s expression hardened instantly, shifting from husband to predator in a breath.

"What was that?" Elena whispered.

"Stay behind ," he said.

They stepped out into the hallway. A vase lay shattered on the polished floor, pieces scattered like glittering shards.

And standing in the middle of them... was Lydia.

Her face was pale, her breathing uneven, her hands shaking as she stared at them.

"Lydia?" Adrian stepped forward. "What happened?"

She lifted her eyes slowly—and Elena saw sothing she had never seen in Lydia before.

Fear.

"Adrian..." Lydia’s voice trembled. "You need to co downstairs. Now."

"What’s going on?" Adrian demanded.

Lydia swallowed, her throat bobbing.

Her next words drained the warmth from Elena’s body.

"It’s Father," she whispered. "He’s here."

Elena’s pulse spiked.

Not today.

Not now.

Not so soon.

Adrian cursed under his breath and gripped Elena’s hand.

"Stay close," he said sharply. "Don’t say anything unless I tell you to. And don’t show fear."

Elena nodded, but her fingers trembled in his.

They descended the staircase together—the air cold, the mansion silent except for the echo of their footsteps.

And at the bottom of the stairs...

Standing beside the grand piano as if he owned every breath in the room...

Was Adrian’s father.

Tall. Severe. Eyes as sharp as carved ice. The kind of man whose presence demanded obedience without a word.

He turned slowly when he heard them, and his gaze landed on Elena with a calmness more terrifying than anger.

"Elena Rowan," he said, his voice deep and emotionless. "We finally et."

Elena felt her heart drop into her stomach.

Adrian stepped instinctively in front of her.

"Why are you here?" he asked coldly.

His father smiled thinly. "To correct a mistake."

"Which mistake?" Adrian’s voice was a blade.

"You married soone I did not choose."

Lydia flinched.

Elena stopped breathing.

Adrian’s father stepped closer, hands behind his back, gaze fixed on Elena like she was prey.

"And I have co," he said quietly, "to remove her."
