Chapter 45 — THE SILENCE AFTER THE EXPLOSION

The night after the explosion felt too heavy to breathe in.

Smoke mixed with the storm’s cold wind, weaving into the thick darkness around Adrian’s estate as firefighters and security moved like shadows across the wreckage. Sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the rain, but none of it felt real to Elena.

Her entire body trembled—not just from shock, but from the mory of the mont the world had erupted behind them. The blast still echoed in her skull like a nightmare refusing to fade.

"Elena."

Adrian’s hand tightened around hers, grounding her. "You’re safe now. Stay with ."

She tried to breathe, but her chest felt caged. "Soone tried to kill us."

His jaw flexed with lethal calm. "Yes. And they will fail every ti."

Adrian wasn’t shouting. He didn’t need to. His voice was low, cold, and absolute—like a promise carved from steel.

The flas behind them crackled faintly as rain beat down on the burning walls. What remained of the mansion glowed like a dying creature, its bones exposed.

Elena swallowed, unable to tear her gaze away.

"Your house—"

"Is replaceable," Adrian cut in. "You’re not."

Sothing in her heart twisted painfully at the sincerity in his tone.

Before she could speak, he guided her toward the armored SUV. The storm whipped around them, but he shielded her with his body, not letting go even for a second. When he opened the door, his hand never left the small of her back.

"Inside," he said.

She obeyed.

---

Inside the SUV

The interior was warm, quiet, and painfully clean compared to the chaos they’d escaped. The faint hum of the engine should have cald her, but she still felt the explosion vibrating inside her bones.

Adrian glanced at her.

"Are you cold?"

She shook her head, but he adjusted the heater anyway, his movents gentle... too gentle for a man who had just stared death in the face.

"Elena," he began after a long silence, "you need to hear this."

She braced.

He didn’t look angry—not like earlier.

He looked... determined. And that scared her more.

"Tonight wasn’t random," he said. "This wasn’t a scare tactic."

"Then what was it?" she whispered.

"A ssage," he answered. "One ant for . And for whoever is working against my family."

Elena’s breath hitched. "Your father’s enemies?"

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

"And his allies," Adrian said quietly.

Her stomach twisted. "So... your father might be part of—"

"I don’t know yet." He cut her off with a controlled breath. "I won’t accuse him until I have proof. But soone close to us fed information. Soone who knew your schedule."

She felt the air leave her lungs.

"So I was the target."

Adrian’s silence confird it.

"Elena..." His voice softened, but the danger underneath it was unmistakable. "They went after you because they know what you an to ."

Her heart stuttered.

She opened her mouth but never got the chance to speak. His phone rang sharply. Adrian answered instantly.

"What did you find?" he demanded.

Elena watched his expression darken with every word he heard.

"How many devices?"

"...What about the east wing?"

"...Send everything to my encrypted line."

He hung up.

"Adrian?" she asked, voice unsteady.

He didn’t sugarcoat it.

"There were three explosive devices on the property."

Elena’s blood turned to ice.

"The one that went off was the smallest."

She pressed a hand to her mouth, shaking. "And the other two?"

"Strong enough to bring down part of the mansion," Adrian said. "If we hadn’t left—"

She didn’t need the rest.

Her eyes filled with tears she didn’t want to show.

"Elena," he said quietly, "soone is trying to destroy everything connected to . And they started with you."

"Why ?" Her voice cracked.

Adrian turned fully toward her, his expression raw with truth.

"Because you’re the only variable they can’t control," he said. "The only person powerful enough to break the plans they’ve built."

Her breath trembled.

"I’m not powerful."

"You are," he insisted. "You just don’t know how dangerous you are to them yet."

She had no idea what he ant.

But she felt the weight of it.

And she felt the shift inside him—a man who was no longer protecting her out of obligation, but out of sothing deeper.

Sothing he hadn’t admitted yet.

The Secure Penthouse

The SUV descended into a private underground garage beneath one of Adrian’s hidden properties. Steel doors shut behind them with a hiss, locking out the storm.

Adrian stepped out quickly and opened her door, placing a hand on her waist as he helped her out.

The penthouse was sleek, cold, and fortified—designed for survival, not comfort. Heavy locks, reinforced glass, silent alarms. A place for a man with enemies.

Adrian locked the final bolt, then turned to her.

"Elena," he said softly.

She lifted her eyes.

He stepped closer—slowly, like approaching a wounded creature.

"You almost died today," he murmured. "And when I saw you fall... sothing inside broke."

Her breath caught.

He raised a hand and touched her face lightly, wiping soot from her cheek with the tenderness of a man terrified of losing control.

"This is bigger than us arguing," he whispered.

"Bigger than the past. Bigger than everything. From now on, you are not alone. You hear ?"

"Adrian—"

"No." His voice deepened. "I am not letting anything happen to you. Not ever."

Her heart thudded painfully.

Then—

He stepped even closer.

"Elena..."

His breath brushed her skin.

"You matter to more than you realize."

Her eyes widened.

He wasn’t saying it as a billionaire.

He wasn’t saying it as a husband bound by contract.

He was saying it as a man whose control was slipping.

She parted her lips to speak—

But a loud knock slamd against the penthouse door.

Three sharp, deliberate strikes.

Elena jumped.

Adrian instantly positioned himself in front of her, one hand reaching behind his back toward a concealed weapon.

"Stay behind ," he murmured.

The knocks ca again—slow, confident, unhurried.

Adrian unlocked the safety latch but kept the door mostly closed.

"Who is it?" he demanded.

A cold, familiar voice answered.

"Open the door, Adrian. We need to talk."

Elena’s blood froze.

She knew that voice.

So did Adrian.

His jaw tightened, fury flickering in his eyes.

"Elena," he whispered without turning, "whatever happens... don’t say a word."

He opened the door.

Standing there—drenched from the storm, eyes sharp with secrets, posture heavy with authority—was the last man Elena ever expected to see on a night like this.

Adrian’s father.
