Chapter 60 — A PAST THAT REFUSES TO DIE

Married to the Ruthless Billionaire for Revenge

Silence stretched through Adrian’s office like a living thing—thick, suffocating, heavy enough to crush bone. Elena stared at the docunt in her trembling hands, the ink seeming to blur and darken each ti her heart hamred against her ribs.

Her father.

Her father, who had promised her he’d never been involved in anything dangerous.

Her father, who had died leaving more questions than answers.

Her father, who had unknowingly tied her life to Adrian’s long before she ever walked into his world.

"Elena," Adrian said quietly, watching her with a rare mixture of fear and restraint. "Breathe."

She didn’t realize she had stopped. Her chest tightened as she forced air into her lungs.

"This agreent..." Her voice broke. "Why didn’t I know about this? Why didn’t anyone tell ?"

Marcus stepped forward, but one glare from Adrian froze him in place. Adrian moved closer, sliding the paper from her fingers before she tore it.

"You didn’t know because our fathers never wanted us to know," Adrian said, keeping his voice steady even though the tension in his shoulders betrayed him. "They hid this because it was bigger than their companies. Bigger than our families. Bigger than everything we thought we understood."

Elena shook her head, unable to make sense of anything. "My father wasn’t like this. He didn’t do things like this—he—"

She stopped, realizing she didn’t actually know. The man she loved had died with secrets buried deeper than she ever imagined.

"Your father and mine," Adrian continued softly, "entered an agreent that should never have existed. They pulled Ward’s family into it. Lydia’s father. They created a chain of consequences none of them bothered to break."

Elena swallowed, the reality hitting her harder with each word.

"And Ward..." Her voice cracked. "He’s doing all this now because of sothing they began?"

"Yes," Adrian said. "He’s trying to rewrite an old story in blood."

"And I’m stuck in the middle because of sothing my father did." She whispered it because saying it any louder would shatter her.

Adrian lifted her chin gently so she would look at him.

"You are not responsible for the sins of anyone who ca before you. Not your father. Not mine."

"But—"

"No." His voice sharpened, leaving no room for self-bla. "Listen to . I don’t care what that paper says. Your father’s choices don’t define you."

A tear slipped down her cheek. Adrian caught it with his thumb.

Marcus, sensing the volatility of the mont, quietly excused himself and left the room. Adrian didn’t look away from her until the door closed.

"Elena," he murmured, "you are not part of the problem. You are the reason I’m fighting to end it."

She closed her eyes, letting herself lean into his warmth, just for a mont. Then she drew a slow breath and straightened.

"What now?" she whispered.

Adrian’s jaw clenched. "Now we find Ward before he uses this information against you—or against anyone else."

A chill swept across her spine. "And Lydia’s brother? The one everyone thought was dead?"

"We find him too," Adrian said, eyes darkening. "Because soone has been lying to all of us for years. And whoever faked his death is still out there."

Elena felt the ground shift beneath her again. "You think he’s part of this?"

"I think he’s either a victim... or a weapon," Adrian said. "And right now, we can’t afford to assu either."

A knock rapped sharply at the door, followed by a guard stepping inside.

"Sir, we have a situation at the gates."

Adrian’s entire posture changed—sharp, alert, deadly. "What kind of situation?"

"A woman showed up asking to speak to Madam Elena. She says she knows sothing about her father."

The blood drained from Elena’s face.

Adrian’s expression went from cold to lethal in a single heartbeat.

"Bring her inside," he ordered. "Search her first. No weapons, no exceptions."

"Yes, sir."

The guard rushed out.

Elena turned to Adrian, heart thundering. "Who could it be? My father didn’t have close friends. He didn’t trust easily."

"That worries more," Adrian said, grabbing his phone and sending a rapid ssage. "Anyone from his past showing up now is not a coincidence—it’s a calculated move."

He placed a protective hand on her back. "Stay close to ."

---

Downstairs, the mansion’s atmosphere tightened like an invisible fist. Guards positioned themselves across the foyer while Adrian led Elena to stand behind him, shielding her from whoever entered.

The front doors opened.

A woman stepped inside—late fifties, dressed in modest clothing, hands clasped tightly. Her eyes flickered around until they landed on Elena.

"Elena," the woman breathed, voice trembling. "You look... you look so much like her."

Adrian’s gaze sharpened. "Who are you?"

The woman swallowed hard. "My na is Margarette. I worked for Elena’s father for seventeen years."

Elena felt her heart stop.

"My father never ntioned you," she whispered.

Margarette nodded slowly. "He made sure of that. He didn’t want anyone knowing who he trusted. But I was there the night everything changed. The night that agreent with Adrian’s father was signed."

Adrian stiffened.

"What do you know?" he demanded.

Margarette’s eyes filled with fear. "I know the truth about what happened. I know why Ward’s family was dragged into it. And I know... why your father was killed."

Elena felt the floor tilt beneath her.

Adrian stepped forward in a controlled, deadly slow movent. "You’re saying he wasn’t killed in the accident?"

Margarette shook her head. "It wasn’t an accident at all."

Elena’s breath shattered.

"What are you saying?" she whispered.

Margarette looked directly at her.

"It was murder."

A stunned silence ripped through the hall.

Adrian’s eyes turned to ice.

"By who?" he asked, voice quiet in the most dangerous way.

Margarette trembled.

"By the sa man who tried to have Lydia’s brother killed," she whispered. "By the man who started the deal... and destroyed every life tied to it."

Elena felt her blood run cold.

Adrian’s voice turned low, lethal.

"Say his na."

Margarette closed her eyes.

"Your father, Adrian," she whispered. "It was your father."

The world went still.

Elena grabbed the railing beside her to keep from collapsing. Adrian’s entire body went rigid—shock, fury, disbelief striking him all at once.

"My father is dead," Adrian said slowly, every word dripping with restrained violence. "If you’re lying—"

"I’m not lying!" Margarette cried. "I kept the truth hidden because your father threatened everyone who knew. He wanted the deal buried. He wanted Elena’s father gone. And he wanted Ward silenced forever."

Elena covered her mouth, her breath breaking.

Adrian’s fists clenched. For the first ti, she saw sothing dangerously close to devastation flicker across his face.

"Elena..." he whispered, voice cracking just slightly.

She stepped closer, touching his hand before he could pull away.

"It’s not you," she whispered. "This isn’t you. This is your father’s past—not yours."

But Adrian barely heard her.

Because the truth had finally clawed its way out of the grave—

A truth drenched in betrayal, power, and blood.

A truth that tied all of their lives together...

...and threatened to tear them apart.
