In the alley, the sll of blood was mixed with the stench of urine.

The two secret agents efficiently used the thug’s own belt to tie up the four people like dumplings.

The sound of police sirens approached from afar.

A jeep and two security departnt officers on bicycles arrived first.

The police officers from the precinct jumped out of the car.

"Sister-in-law!"

"Mr. Lin!"

The police and security departnt personnel’s expressions changed when they saw Lin Wan Yi with a baby stroller behind her.

Lin Wan Yi didn’t look at them.

Her gaze fell upon the man with triangular eyes who lost a tooth.

"Take him with us."

Her voice was utterly calm.

"Where to?" one of the secret agents asked.

Lin Wan Yi pushed the baby stroller forward, the wheels crunching over broken bricks on the ground.

"To find the main culprit."

...

In the residential compound.

Zhang Guilan had just dumped the leftover dinner into the swill bucket.

Humming a little tune, she was in an exceptionally good mood.

By her calculations, those fugitives should have succeeded by now.

Just imagining Lin Wan Yi’s beautiful face twisted in tears, hugging two disabled children, unable to live or die, made her feel light all over.

That’ll teach you to file a complaint!

That’ll teach you to get fired!

This is what you get for crossing !

"Bang!!!"

Her wooden door was kicked open from the outside.

Wood chips flew.

Zhang Guilan, startled, dropped the swill bucket with a clatter.

She jerked around.

At the doorway.

Lin Wan Yi stood there silently, pushing the stroller.

Behind her were two intimidating n escorting a bloodied thug.

It was the man with triangular eyes.

When he saw Zhang Guilan, he looked as if he’d seen salvation, or a death sentence.

"It’s her! It’s her!"

He summoned what strength he could, stretching out his bound hands to point at Zhang Guilan.

"This old woman here! She gave twenty yuan to cripple those two little brats!"

Zhang Guilan’s face went pale in an instant.

Her legs weakened, almost causing her to collapse.

"You... you’re talking nonsense!"

She snapped back and imdiately began creating a scene.

"I don’t even know you! You damned liar!"

"Lin Wan Yi! It’s you! You set this up to fra !"

She plopped to the ground, clutching her thighs and wailing.

"No justice! The daughter of a capitalist is out to harm people!"

The nearby neighbors, upon hearing the commotion, poked their heads out to watch the spectacle.

The security officers and police frowned.

A troubleso and loud woman like this was the hardest to deal with.

Lin Wan Yi said nothing.

She simply reached out to the secret agent behind her.

The agent understood and took a handkerchief-wrapped bundle from his pocket, placing it in her hand.

It was a few crumpled banknotes.

In total, twenty yuan.

Lin Wan Yi held the money and walked over to Zhang Guilan.

She crouched down, showing the money to Zhang Guilan, who was sprawled on the floor.

"Aunt Zhang."

Her voice was gentle.

"This money, you gave it, didn’t you?"

"It wasn’t ! I didn’t do it!" Zhang Guilan denied vehently.

Lin Wan Yi smiled.

She pinched one of the five-yuan notes, pointing to an inconspicuous black dot on it.

"How unfortunate."

"Yesterday afternoon, I was returning from the post office and passed by the grocery store."

"I happened to see you buying soy sauce, Aunt Zhang."

"When you were paying, you accidentally knocked over the soy sauce bottle, and a few drops splashed onto the corner of this money."

Lin Wan Yi paused, watching as Zhang Guilan’s face froze.

"I ant to remind you then."

"But I forgot later."

The air was still.

Zhang Guilan’s cries were caught in her throat.

Soy sauce?

She did buy soy sauce yesterday... and it seed... it did spill a little?

She couldn’t rember! She couldn’t rember at all!

Yet Lin Wan Yi spoke with such conviction, such detail!

Could there really be evidence left?

She stared into Lin Wan Yi’s calm, unwavering eyes, eyes that seed to be looking at a dead person.

A chill ran from her tailbone all the way to her crown.

"No..."

"It wasn’t ..."

Her voice began to tremble.

"It really wasn’t ..."

Lin Wan Yi stood up and handed the money to the nearby police officer.

"Comrade, here’s the evidence."

"Both testimonial and physical evidence are present."

In this mont, Zhang Guilan’s ntal defenses completely crumbled.

"Ah!!!"

Like a madwoman, she scrambled to her feet, pointing at Lin Wan Yi, letting out a hysterical scream.

"It’s you! You demon fox!"

"Ever since you ca to our compound, nothing good has happened!"

"You cursed ! You got fired! You destroyed my family!"

"You’re a capitalist’s monstrosity! This country shouldn’t keep people like you!"

She flailed about as if to attack.

"Slap!"

A police officer slapped her across the face, the sound crisp and loud.

"Behave yourself!"

The cold handcuffs snapped over her filthy wrists.

"My misfortune is because of you?"

Lin Wan Yi, holding the now-awake Gu Ning, looked down at this crazed woman.

"No."

"Your misfortune is solely due to your stupidity and malice."

"It’s no one else’s fault."

Just then, Dean Li and a few school leaders ran over, panting.

Seeing Zhang Guilan handcuffed and Lin Wan Yi and her children unhard, Dean Li trembled with anger.

"You scoundrel!"

He pointed at Zhang Guilan’s nose and cursed loudly.

"To lay a cruel hand on the future pillar of the nation! Are you even human?"

"Officer! You must punish her severely! Sentence her heavily!"

"This scum doesn’t even deserve a second chance!"

Zhang Guilan was dragged away by two policen, still furiously cursing.

"Lin Wan Yi, I’ll haunt you even as a ghost!"

The neighbors spat at her as she passed.

"Pah! Such a poisonous woman!"

"To go after such small children, her heart must be black!"

The turmoil subsided.

Dean Li walked over to Lin Wan Yi, his face full of apology and lingering fear.

"Xiao Lin, I’m sorry, it was a failure in our school’s managent..."

"We let you and the children be frightened."

Lin Wan Yi shook her head.

"Dean, it’s not your fault."

She glanced at Zhang Guilan being loaded into the police car, disappearing into the night.

Hiring thugs to harm others, especially with intent to harm military families and key protected figures of the country.

The rest of her life would be spent repenting over a sewing machine in prison.

...

Night deepened.

The house returned to quiet.

The twins were already asleep, their little faces flushed, breathing evenly.

Lin Wan Yi tucked them in, preparing to wash up.

As she passed the crib, her steps halted.

In the cool moonlight streaming through the window.

She saw that Gu An, who should have been asleep, was sitting up.

His small body faced away, his shoulders trembling.

Lin Wan Yi quietly approached.

Then, she stood frozen.

On the ground.

Scattered were small, shiny tallic parts.

Cogs, springs, mainsprings, hands...

They were from Professor Liu’s treasured antique pocket watch, brought specifically from Germany.

Now, with that miniature screwdriver, Gu An had dismantled it into pieces.
