"No, no! I told you!" The next morning, a frantic shout in English was heard from the first supply store in Beijing.

Bicycles were parked all over outside, and inside was bustling with people buying New Year’s goods.

Lin Wan Yi wore a beige wool coat, her hair simply tied at the back, revealing a slender, fair neck. She stood in front of the candy and pastry counter, sharply contrasting with the crowd in gray, blue, and black cotton coats around her.

Gu Yanshen stood like a wall behind her, shielding her from the crowd. He held her waist with one hand and carried two heavy net bags with the other, which contained two bottles of Moutai and several packs of Da Qiann cigarettes.

A sudden commotion arose in front.

"No, no! I told you, I want that special kind of tea, black tea! It’s for my friend!"

A blonde, blue-eyed foreign man in a suit was sweating profusely, waving several colorful foreign exchange certificates at the saleslady behind the counter.

The saleswoman clapped her leg in anxiety, raising her voice, "Comrade, I can’t understand your gibberish! You need a sugar coupon to buy brown sugar here, and foreign exchange coupons go to the Friendship Store! Don’t block the people behind you!"

The queue started to grumble.

"What is this foreign devil saying?"

"Who knows, he’s holding everyone up."

Lin Wan Yi walked out from in front of Gu Yanshen and approached the counter.

"Excuse , sir. He ans you should take the foreign exchange coupons to the Friendship Store to buy the black tea, not here. This is the local supply store."

Her London accent was pure, the pronunciation beautiful and fluent, without the slightest hesitation.

The foreign man was taken aback for a mont, then overjoyed, like grabbing onto a lifeline, repeatedly thanking her, "Oh, thank you! Thank you so much! I’m completely lost."

Lin Wan Yi nodded with a smile, then turned to translate a couple of sentences for the saleswoman, indicating the specific route to the Friendship Store.

The foreign guest was extrely grateful as he left.

The saleswoman heaved a long sigh of relief, looking at Lin Wan Yi with admiration on her face.

"Little sister, thank goodness for you! This foreign devil had been stuck here for ages, driving crazy. Which unit are you from? You speak foreign languages even more fluently than they do on the radio!"

"I learned a little at ho before." Lin Wan Yi didn’t elaborate, handing over the money and tickets, "Ma’am, I’d like two pounds of White Rabbit candy and a jar of wheat milk essence."

The saleswoman glanced around, bent down to fish out two square boxes wrapped in kraft paper from the bottom of the counter, and pushed them over along with the milk candy and wheat milk essence.

"Little sister, these are two boxes of premium Golden Monkey chocolate just sent from the south. No tickets needed, I didn’t give them to anyone else who ca to buy. You take them to satisfy your sweet craving."

The people in line around were wide-eyed.

In these tis, chocolate was a rarity, sothing money couldn’t buy, all depending on the saleswoman’s mood.

Lin Wan Yi thanked her. Gu Yanshen paid swiftly, packed the items into the net bag. He looked at his wife beside him, gazing at her cheeks flushed by the supply store’s heating for two seconds. He said nothing, only held her tighter and led her out of the crowd.

Two o’clock in the afternoon.

City Economic and Agricultural Developnt Office, a two-story red brick building.

The Jeep was parked outside the yard. Gu An and Gu Ning were napping in wicker car seats at the back. Little Grey was lying on the footboard, its tail sweeping lazily.

"I’ll walk you in." Gu Yanshen unbuckled his seatbelt.

"No need, Dean Li has already inford them. I’ll just submit the recomndation letter and co right out. You watch the kids." Lin Wan Yi opened the car door.

She took Dean Li’s recomndation letter and walked into the comprehensive office on the second floor.

A tin stove was burning inside, with a young girl behind the desk wearing a brand-new fabric shirt, her hair styled in fashionable waves, filing her nails with a small file.

Lin Wan Yi placed the recomndation letter on the desk.

"Hello, I am Lin Wan Yi, a technician specially invited from Beijing Agricultural College."

Bai Tingting glanced at the recomndation letter, not even intending to pick it up. She blew off the powder on her nails.

"The director’s gone to a eting in the city. Before leaving, he instructed that the newcor should familiarize themselves with past materials. Clear out the unused archive room in the basent and sort out the docunts while you’re at it."

An older staff mber with glasses opened his mouth to say sothing, but Bai Tingting shot him a glare, silencing him.

"Mr. Bai," Lin Wan Yi looked at her, "My job is to assist with improving crop data, not cleaning."

Bai Tingting slamd the file onto the desk and stood up.

"I’m in charge here! My uncle is the deputy director of the bureau. Whatever I tell you to do, you do it. A farming technician acting all high and mighty?"

She eyed Lin Wan Yi’s finely textured wool coat up and down, eyes filled with envy.

Lin Wan Yi remained unfazed.

"Farming is also a science." Her voice calm, "Since Mr. Bai is so knowledgeable, may I ask, what’s the average pH of the saline-alkali soil in the suburbs of Beijing? How should the application ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium be controlled during improvent to avoid soil compaction?"

Bai Tingting was left speechless.

Having graduated junior high through connections, she didn’t even know what pH was.

"You... you stop using these terms to confuse ! Get down to the basent now!" Bai Tingting’s face turned bright red, her voice sharp with anger.

Lin Wan Yi took back the recomndation letter from the desk and turned to leave.

She ignored Bai, heading directly to the stairs. The basent was quiet, which was perfect for reviewing old archives.

The basent archive room.

She pushed open the heavy wooden door, greeted by a musty and dusty sll.

There were no windows, just a dim incandescent bulb overhead. Several rusty iron cabinets lined against the walls, and the floor was piled with dust-laden boxes.

Lin Wan Yi rolled up her sleeves and, with a thought, drew a drop of basic spiritual spring water from her space and rubbed it on her nose. The fresh spiritual energy instantly blocked out the unpleasant moldy sll.

She began to sift through the boxes.

Mostly expired eting minutes and reports.

An hour later.

In the far corner of a tattered box, she found a yellowed kraft file.

On the cover was written: "Preliminary Ideas on the Cold Resistance Improvent of High-Yield Wheat in the Suburbs of Beijing and Reasons for Suspension".

Lin Wan Yi pulled it out and opened it.

Inside were densely recorded batches of experintal data from five years ago. Although shelved due to limited conditions at the ti, the data model on nutrient absorption by wheat roots under low temperatures was precisely the missing key elent in Dean Li’s current project.

With the sample data cultivated by the spiritual spring water from her space, the research could make a direct breakthrough.

She carefully stored the file in her canvas bag.

A soft click.

A sharp tallic sound ca from behind her.

Lin Wan Yi turned her head.

The heavy wooden door had been closed from the outside.

Bai Tingting’s triumphant voice ca from outside.

"Technician Lin, since there’s so much data in the basent, you can stay in there and sort it out properly today. Once you learn to respect your seniors, I’ll co open the door for you."

The footsteps gradually faded.

Lin Wan Yi walked to the door, giving it a push.

The door was locked from the outside with a big iron padlock.

The basent was well sound-proofed, even shouting until hoarse inside, no one on the second floor would hear.

Lin Wan Yi remained unflustered, touching the ring on her hand.

She cast a cold glance at the tightly shut door.

Outside the office building.

The Jeep was parked by the roadside.

Gu Yanshen leaned against the car, smoking a cigarette.

Little Grey, previously dozing on the backseat, suddenly stood up.

Its green eyes fixed on the direction of the red brick office building, a low growl rising in its throat.

A wolf’s sense of sll is extrely keen. It detected the unique fresh scent from its female owner being confined in an enclosed underground space. Moreover, the air still carried the malicious scent of another woman.

Little Grey placed its front paws on the car window, leaping straight out from the half-open window.

"Little Grey." Gu Yanshen flicked away the cigarette butt.

Little Grey didn’t stop, its form like a grey flash, heading directly through the office building’s main door.

Feeling sothing amiss, Gu Yanshen strode after it.

Second-floor corridor.

Bai Tingting was holding a ceramic mug, boasting to the older staff mber.

"To handle this kind of difficult one, you’ve got to teach them a lesson. Leave her locked in for the night, and she’ll surely be compliant tomorrow."

The older staff mber shook his head, afraid to respond.

Suddenly, a chilling low growl ca from the staircase at the end of the corridor.
