The man surnad Wang’s legs gave way, and he fell to the ground heavily.

Gu Yanshen didn’t even spare him another glance, instead giving a nod to the guards behind him. Two tall guards imdiately stepped forward, lifted the man from the ground from both sides, and twisted his arms behind his back, making him unable to move.

"Where’s the supply?" Gu Yanshen asked coldly.

"At... at the abandoned chemical factory in the west of the city..." The man trembled like a fallen leaf in the autumn wind, stamring.

"Who’s your contact?" Gu Yanshen pressed on.

"It’s... it’s Mr. Bai’s uncle, Vice Director Zhou..." the man answered.

Gu Yanshen finally looked towards Bai Tingting, who stood not far away, her face pale. "What did she offer you?"

The man shivered as he confessed, "She... she promised that once it was done, I could beco the deputy head of the supply and marketing cooperative’s purchasing departnt!"

Three questions, each one hitting the mark.

Bai Tingting’s body wavered, and the last bit of color drained from her face. She pointed at the man held up by the guards and shrieked with a sharp voice, "You’re talking nonsense! I don’t even know you! You ca to sell the fertilizer yourself!"

Gu Yanshen turned his head to look at her.

His gaze was devoid of emotion, yet it choked Bai Tingting’s screams in her throat. It was as though an invisible hand clasped around her neck; her legs went limp, and she crumpled to the ground, her freshly perd wavy hair covered in dirt and grass clippings.

A sharp car horn blared from a distance, growing nearer.

A black Volga car raced over with a screeching stop beside the jeep. The door swung open, and a middle-aged man in a Zhongshan suit, his belly protruding, jumped out—it was Bai Tingting’s uncle, Vice Director Zhou.

"What’s going on! What are you doing!" Vice Director Zhou shouted with the authority of an official as soon as he got out of the car, "Who gave you the right to arrest people in the village? Is there no law anymore!"

He pointed at Gu Yanshen’s nose, spewing spit as he yelled, "I don’t care which unit you’re from, release them imdiately! Or I’ll make a call to your military district!"

The villagers, intimidated by his presence, stepped back slightly.

Gu Yanshen said nothing, rely gesturing with his chin toward the jeep behind him.

The car door opened, and an officer in a military uniform hurriedly approached, handing a manila folder to Gu Yanshen.

Gu Yanshen pulled out several pages from inside and began reading aloud in an even tone for everyone to hear, "Zhou Jian Country, 42 years old, Vice Director of the City Economic and Agricultural Developnt Office. Last October, he abused his power to swap three tons of substandard cent for special supply cent, earning a profit of three thousand yuan. This January, he classified the chemical factory in the west of the city as scrapped assets, secretly selling it to black market dealers for producing fake fertilizers, with profits split 70-30."

With each sentence Gu Yanshen read, Vice Director Zhou’s face grew whiter.

When Gu Yanshen finished the last sentence, Vice Director Zhou’s forehead was drenched with cold sweat, and he pointed shakily at Gu Yanshen, unable to utter a single word.

"Vice Director Zhou," Gu Yanshen folded the docunt neatly and placed it back into the folder, "these pieces of evidence have been verified by the Security Departnt. Now, please co with us."

As soon as he finished speaking, the officer in the military uniform waved his hand, and two more soldiers erged from the back of the jeep, stepping forward to hold Vice Director Zhou’s arms.

Even in the midst of a last-ditch struggle, Vice Director Zhou yelled, "You... you’re slandering ! I want to see my lawyer!"

No one paid any attention to his protests.

He, along with Bai Tingting, who was slumped on the ground, and the fake expert, were all taken into the jeep behind. The military vehicle started, kicking up a cloud of dust, and soon disappeared down the dirt road at the edge of the village.

The farce ended with the force of a thunderbolt.

But the trouble for Hongxing Village was just beginning.

"Technician Lin," the old village head puffed on his dry tobacco, his face full of worry as he walked to Lin Wan Yi’s side, "The people are gone, but what about our land? Spring plowing is just around the corner, and without fertilizer, these hundreds of acres can’t be planted—we won’t even recover the seed money."

The villagers also gathered around, chattering all at once.

Soone echoed, "Yeah, this saline land won’t sprout without fertilizer."

Another sighed, "This really sses up major plans."

Lin Wan Yi motioned everyone to be quiet.

She took out a palm-sized glass bottle from her canvas bag. It contained half a bottle of clear, light green liquid, glowing softly under the sunlight.

"Who says we have no fertilizer?" Lin Wan Yi unscrewed the cap, and a fresh scent of grass spread imdiately, "This is my latest developed concentrated nutrient solution."

She walked over to a water jar nearby, scooped so water into a wooden basin, and then tilted the glass bottle, carefully letting one drop fall into the basin.

Just one drop.

The light green liquid dissolved imdiately, and the water seed to be infused with life.

"This bottle can dilute one hundred basins of water. For one acre of land, you only need to apply the diluted nutrient solution once." Lin Wan Yi looked at their astonished faces, speaking clearly and confidently, "I assure everyone, with my nutrient solution, this year’s harvest will be at least double last year’s."

Double?

The villagers exchanged glances filled with skepticism.

This was even bolder than boasting.

"Technician Lin, this... this isn’t a joke, right?" The old village head hesitated to ask.

"Whether it’s a joke or not, you’ll see tomorrow morning." Lin Wan Yi handed the diluted nutrient solution to the old village chief, "Chief, use this basin to irrigate the experintal field we just cultivated yesterday."

Early the next day, at dawn.

The experintal field in Hongxing Village was already surrounded by people.

Everyone craned their necks, fixated on the land where the water had been applied just the night before. To them, at most, the soil would just be more moist.

"Look! What’s that!" A sharp-eyed young man suddenly shouted from the crowd.

Following his finger, all eyes focused on the center of the field.

Erging from the flat earth, a swath of fresh green shoots stood tall and proud. The wheat seedlings had broken through the ground, their leaves lush and a vivid green, growing more vigorously than seedlings treated with the best fertilizers for a week.

This wasn’t just any crop; it was a miracle!

After a mont of silence, the crowd erupted in a tidal wave of cheers.

Soone shouted from within the crowd, "They’ve grown! They’ve really grown!"

Everyone exclaid in amazent, "Oh my! It’s a miracle! Technician Lin is like a living immortal!"

The old village chief was moved to tears, rushing to the edge of the field to touch the robust wheat seedlings, murmuring repeatedly, "We’ve been saved, Hongxing Village has been saved!"

Amid the village’s jubilation, a jeep roared into the village faster than it had the day before.

Before the car had even co to a full stop, Dean Li from the Provincial Agricultural College jumped out of the front passenger seat. Waving a docunt in his hand, his face was glowing with uncontrollable joy and excitent, too absorbed to even adjust the glasses slipping down his nose.

He pushed through the cheering crowd, grabbing Lin Wan Yi’s arm, his voice trembling slightly with excitent.

"Wanyi! It’s happened! The city has decided!" Dean Li raised the red-stamped docunt in his hand, shouting with all his strength, "This pilot project will be nad after you! You are the pioneer of agricultural reform in Beijing!"
