Lin Wan Yi looked at the familiar yet acerbic handwriting on the envelope, her fingertips slightly chilled.

She opened the envelope.

The letter began with a lengthy congratulatory ssage.

"Wan Yi, my daughter, hearing that you’re expecting twins is indeed a monuntal joy for the Lin Family, and your father and I in Beijing are happy for you."

Lin Wan Yi tugged at the corners of her mouth, her expression unreadable.

Turning to the next page of the letter, the tone shifted.

"But you’ve been frail since childhood, and now with the joy of twins, one wonders if your delicate fra can bear such overwhelming fortune."

"A woman married should regard her husband as heaven, remaining obedient and dutiful as her role dictates."

"Especially how you ended up with Mr. Gu, you must be well aware."

"Certain matters, if in Beijing people might turn a blind eye, but if it spreads to the disciplined military district, to your father-in-law’s ears, it might greatly hinder Mr. Gu’s reputation and future."

"Take care of yourself."

The letter ended abruptly here.

Each word felt like a honey-coated needle, piercing the heart.

Lin Wan Yi slowly folded the letter and placed it back into the envelope.

She didn’t panic, but instead seed to comprehend sothing.

Just half a month ago, she discreetly used so of her father’s old connections and asked a trusted old friend to investigate the "sister" who handed her that glass of water at the entrance of the State-owned Restaurant.

It seed sothing had been discovered.

The opponent was afraid.

This letter was not an act of bravado, but a warning cloaked in false bravado.

Lin Wan Yi walked to the kitchen and struck a match.

The orange fla flickered; she brought the envelope closer.

The paper began to curl from the corner, blackening, then was devoured by the flas.

She watched quietly, only pouring the ash-grey powder into the sink and rinsing it away once it was reduced to ashes.

Just then, the door to the consultation room was gently opened.

Gu Yanshen had returned.

Upon entering, he detected a faint scent of burning in the air.

Then he saw Lin Wan Yi standing by the sink, her back to him, appearing sowhat frail.

"What’s wrong?"

Gu Yanshen took a few steps over and stood behind her.

Lin Wan Yi turned around, her face calm once more.

"Nothing, just felt a little stuffy and got up to walk around."

Gu Yanshen’s gaze fixed on her face, not missing any subtle expression.

"You don’t look well."

He reached out, trying to feel her forehead for temperature.

Lin Wan Yi didn’t evade, simply looking up at him.

"Gu Yanshen, I want to ask you sothing."

"Hmm."

"If... if soone uses what happened at the State-owned Restaurant to make an issue, what would you do?"

Gu Yanshen paused in his movent to tuck the blanket.

He looked up, his gaze sharp as lightning.

"Who told you sothing?"

"Today, I received a letter, an anonymous one," Lin Wan Yi said calmly. "The letter stated it knows how we got together, and if I don’t comply, they’ll expose it."

She didn’t ntion her stepmother, nor her own investigation.

This was a family issue she didn’t want to drag him into the Lin Family’s murky waters.

Gu Yanshen said nothing.

The consultation room was eerily silent.

He rembered that day.

Opening the storeroom door, the girl’s feverish body, dazed eyes, and those unconscious murmurs of "hot."

Back then, he thought it was just ordinary scheming, neglecting the abnormal body heat.

Turns out, from the start, it was a conspiracy targeted at her!

An anger mixed with hindsight exploded from his chest.

Not toward her.

Toward himself!

As her husband, he was so oblivious, allowing her to suffer such humiliation, now even being blackmailed!

"Bang!"

He slamd a fist onto the table next to him.

The enal cup on the table jumped, emitting a crisp sound.

Lin Wan Yi was startled.

"You..."

The next mont, she was pulled into a tight, solid chest.

Gu Yanshen’s arms, like iron clamps, trapped her firmly in his embrace, holding her with a force that seed intent on rging her into his bones.

His breathing was labored, chest heaving violently.

Lin Wan Yi could feel he was trembling.

With anger.

"I’m sorry."

After a long ti, his hoarse voice ca from above her head.

"It’s my fault."

"I didn’t protect you well."

Lin Wan Yi shook her head in his arms, wrapping her hand around his lean waist, gently patting his back.

"It has nothing to do with you."

"It’s my business!" Gu Yanshen interrupted her, his voice carrying a subdued ferocity. "Lin Wan Yi, listen to ."

"You are now my wife, Gu Yanshen’s wife, the mother of my child."

"No matter how we started, you won’t escape in this lifeti."

"Anyone who dares to harm a hair on your head with this, I will make them pay with their life!"

The man’s promise echoed strongly, every word striking Lin Wan Yi’s heart.

She felt sothing in her heart soften and warm.

At that mont, her mind buzzed.

Her consciousness sank into the space.

She saw, at the edge of the black soil beside the Spiritual Spring, a small patch of darker soil appeared out of nowhere.

Above the soil, a few specks of tender green shoots were breaking through.

A type of plant she had never seen before.

Lin Wan Yi’s heart skipped a beat.

The space had upgraded again.

She stepped back from Gu Yanshen’s embrace, looking up at him.

"Gu Yanshen."

"Hmm?"

"The person knows the arrangents in the No. 1 private room at the State-owned Restaurant and can discreetly drug ; they might even be well aware of your whereabouts."

Lin Wan Yi looked into his eyes, speaking each word clearly.

"The person to investigate is likely soone wearing the sa uniform as you."

Gu Yanshen’s aura beca even more oppressive.

He imdiately turned and walked to the room’s only telephone.

He picked up the receiver and dialed a military line shortcode directly.

"Connect to the guesthouse, I need to speak with Director Wang."

The call was quickly connected.

"Old Wang, it’s , Gu Yanshen."

"In 1975, sumr, Beicheng State-owned Restaurant, that night, the one responsible for the outer security of the No. 1 private room, was it an old soldier nad Wang Qiang?"

There was a few seconds of silence on the other end.

"Yanshen? Why are you suddenly asking about him?"

"First, answer ."

"Yes, his na was Wang Qiang, that’s right, I rember him. What’s the matter?"

"I need to find him urgently," Gu Yanshen’s voice was icy. "Give his current contact information and address."

On the other end, Director Wang’s voice carried a hint of difficulty.

"Yanshen, this... might be a bit tricky."

"Wang Qiang... he transferred to civilian work earlier."

"The dossier stated it was for personal reasons. We found it odd back then since he had only two years left to complete his term, leaving early ant getting nothing."

Gu Yanshen’s brows furrowed tightly.

"What about his transfer address?"

Director Wang sighed.

"That’s where the issue lies. The address in the file is invalid. We once sent his allowance to the address, but it was returned."

"The man vanished without a trace."
