SHIELD Headquarters.
"Pruned," Nick Fury repeated the word, tasting the horror of it.
"Lucas says 'Pruned Tilines,'" Fury explained. "You don't prune a wild forest. You prune a garden. A garden has a gardener."
The implication hung in the air like smoke.
"Soone is curating history," Coulson realized. "Soone decides which tilines get to exist and which ones go in the trash."
"And apparently," Clint Barton muttered, "Zombie World and Purple Potato World are both 'approved' tilines. Which makes wonder just how bad the 'Pruned' ones were."
Stark Mansion.
Tony Stark was pacing so fast he was leaving afterimages.
"It's a tree," Tony mumbled, sketching furiously on a holographic canvas. "The Sacred Tiline. Think of ti as a tree."
He drew a thick trunk.
"This is the main reality. The one where we're standing right now. The one where I'm Tony Stark and not... I don't know, a sentient pizza."
He drew a branch shooting off to the side.
"This is a branch. A variance. Maybe in this tiline, I ate a salad instead of a cheeseburger in 2008. Small change. But over ti... the butterfly effect amplifies. The branch grows."
He slashed a red X through the branch.
"And then soone cuts it. Pruning. They delete the entire reality."
"Who has that kind of power?" Jarvis asked. "To delete a universe requires energy output exceeding the Big Bang."
"Exactly," Tony stopped, staring at his drawing. "It's God-level. No, it's above God. It's Editorial."
He shivered. The idea that his entire life—his struggles, his triumphs, his anxiety attacks—was being "allowed" to happen by so cosmic bureaucrat was terrifying.
"And Rebooting the Universe," Tony added, referencing the comic book lore Lucas had ntioned. "That's when the Gardener decides the whole tree is rotten. He rips it out and plants a new one. 'Let's try again, but this ti Tony has blue armor.'"
"It's horrifying," Tony whispered. "We are ants in a terrarium."
SHIELD Headquarters.
"Wait," Natasha Romanoff said, her eyes narrowing as she recalled an earlier entry. "Go back to the beginning."
"June 6th," she recited from mory. "Lucas wrote: 'I wonder if my arrival will attract the attention of The Ancient One... or Kang.'"
The room went still.
"We thought they were just powerful wizards or warlords," Natasha continued. "But look at the context. Lucas was afraid that his arrival—a change in the tiline—would attract them."
"He's a variant," Fury realized. "An anomaly. He's not supposed to be here. His existence creates a branch."
"So The Ancient One and Kang..." Hill connected the dots. "They are the Gardeners. They are the ones who watch the tiline."
"That explains why Lucas is so lazy," Natasha deduced. "Why he's just 'waiting for Tony to get kidnapped' instead of using his future knowledge to beco Emperor of Earth."
"He's keeping his head down," Fury nodded. "He's trying to minimize his 'Butterfly Effect.' If he changes too much... the Gardeners co for him."
"Smart kid," Barton admitted. "If I knew there were Ti Police watching my every move, I'd stay on the couch too."
"But he's failing," Coulson pointed out. "He's becoming Superman. He's beating up criminals. He's interacting with the Stacys. He's making ripples."
"And eventually," Fury said grimly, "those ripples will beco waves. And when the waves get big enough... Kang will notice."
"We need to find out who Kang is," Fury ordered. "Is he a person? An organization? An alien?"
"Lucas ntioned 'He Who Remains' in a later entry," Natasha noted. "And the TVA. Ti Variance Authority."
"Ti Cops," Fury summarized. "Great. Just what we needed. Bureaucrats with ti machines."
"This Ancient One," Tony's voice ca through a secure channel—he had hacked into the SHIELD briefing again, or maybe they had just left the line open. "I've been looking into 'Magic.' The Ancient One is likely the Sorcerer Supre. The mystical defender of Earth."
"So we have a Wizard protecting us from demons," Fury said. "And a Ti Lord protecting us from... ourselves?"
"It seems the hierarchy of power in the Marvel Universe is about to change," Tony quipped, though he sounded exhausted.
"Pruned Tilines," Tony repeated. "Let's make sure ours doesn't get cut. I like this tiline. It has cheeseburgers."
