The fate of "Mr. Happy" (JFK) was a lesson no President ever forgot. Since Dallas, the Defense Departnt had operated with impunity. Audits were requested, ignored, and then politely forgotten.
In Afghanistan, the corruption was staggering. Equipnt "lost." Pallets of cash "misplaced." It was an open secret that the local warlords were sotis better equipped than the US Marines, thanks to the black market.
So when Lucas wrote about Stark Weapons being sold to terrorists... it wasn't a conspiracy theory. It was business as usual.
"The Military-Industrial Complex isn't just a threat," Fury mused. "It's a separate branch of governnt. One with its own army."
"And Stark Industries is the crown jewel," Natasha added. "Which makes Obadiah Stane untouchable. Unless we have proof."
"So," Barton leaned forward, sharpening an arrow. "What's the play? We can't arrest Stane without starting a war. And we can't arrest Stark because... well, he's Stark."
"Think about the tiline," Natasha said, her eyes gleaming with intelligence. "Lucas says Stark is supposed to go to Afghanistan. He's supposed to be kidnapped. He's supposed to see his weapons killing Aricans. That trauma is the catalyst for Iron Man."
"But he skipped it," Natasha continued. "He cancelled the trip. He's building the armor withoutthe trauma."
"People don't just change their personalities overnight," she argued. "Jiangshan is easy to change, but a person's nature is hard to move. Tony Stark is an arrogant, profit-driven narcissist. Unless he had a near-death experience... or a cheat sheet... he wouldn't suddenly beco a superhero."
"You're saying he knows," Fury said, his single eye locking onto hers. "You're saying he has a diary."
"Exactly," Natasha nodded. "If we have one, and Lucas has the original... why wouldn't the 'Protagonist' get a copy?"
The room fell silent as the realization sank in.
"It fits," Coulson agreed. "He cancelled the trip because he read about the kidnapping. He built the armor because he read about Iron Man. He's using the diary as a walkthrough guide."
"Which ans," Fury smiled, a rare, genuine smile, "we have leverage."
"If Stark has a diary," Fury said, "then he's just as scared as we are. He knows about the Aliens. He knows about Hydra. He knows about the Purple Potato."
"And most importantly," Natasha pointed out, "he knows about the Avengers Initiative."
"He knows you're coming to recruit him," she said. "He knows the 'Bald Egg Head' will show up in his living room."
"So let's not disappoint him," Fury decided. "It's ti to bring him in."
"And think about the budget," Natasha added, hitting Fury where it mattered most. "The World Security Council counts every penny. If we recruit Stark... we recruit his bank account."
Fury's eye lit up.
"Funding," he whispered. "Off the books. Untraceable. Infinite."
"If Stark joins," Fury realized, "I don't need to beg the Council for a Helicarrier upgrade. I can just ask Tony to build one."
"It solves everything," Fury said, standing up. "We get a heavy hitter. We get a genius. And we get a sugar daddy."
"Coulson," Fury ordered. "Prepare the pitch. We're not just recruiting Iron Man. We're recruiting the CFO of the Avengers."
"And Lucas?" Coulson asked.
"Lucas is the wildcard," Fury said. "But Stark is the anchor. If we get Stark, we stabilize the team. Then we deal with Superman."
"Natasha," Fury turned to her. "You're still the 'Beautiful Deadly Viper.' Lucas expects you to infiltrate Stark Industries. But Stark expects it too."
"So we flip the script," Natasha suggested. "I don't go undercover as a notary. I go in as... Black Widow. SHIELD Liaison."
"Honesty," she smirked. "It's the one thing neither of them will expect."
Stark Mansion.
Tony sneezed.
"Soone is talking about my money," he muttered, rubbing his nose.
"Sir," Jarvis announced. "Incoming call from Director Fury. Secure line."
Tony looked at the screen. The "Bald Egg Head" was calling.
"Well," Tony said, leaning back in his chair. "He knows I skipped the kidnapping. I know he knows about the diary. Let's see who blinks first."
"Answer it, Jarvis."
"Director Fury," Tony said, his voice dripping with casual arrogance. "To what do I owe the pleasure? Finally decided to buy so missiles?"
"We need to talk, Stark," Fury's voice was serious. "About the future. And about a certain book we both seem to be reading."
Tony paused. The ga was up.
"Co on over, Nick," Tony said. "I'll put on a pot of coffee. And maybe... we can compare notes on the Purple Potato."
