Renee.

Why does that sound familiar...

I don’t recognize it, yet it still sounds familiar. What is it...

His eyes suddenly widened.

"Renee!" He couldn’t help himself, he had to exclaim out loud. She had also gotten the achievent for being the first player to achieve Rank Two! Why did she go on a killing spree?

How did she reach Rank Two so quickly while on a killing spree? And why didn’t he rember her in his past life?

Lumi sat there, stunned.

It was one thing to not rember a random. But Renee had already reached Second Rank before him, was presumably higher level than him, and had killed a thousand players.

That was not just so random.

That could not be skill alone, nor could it be luck alone. Such an achievent required her have both at their peak. With that on her side, how could she not have existed in his past life?

Sure, he did release a guide.

But would that really make enough of a difference for so unknown player to co out of nowhere and make it?

Maybe.

It wasn’t impossible.

PvP, however, was entirely a waste of ti.

What Lumi needed was as many players as possible, as strong as possible, under his banner. Then, to have as many of them free themselves from the system as possible.

Power was required to free yourself from the system. Dying, and by extension, focusing on killing rather than progress, slowed down progression. Therefore PvP was bad.

He would see about ssaging her later regarding her activities. For now, he shifted his attention to the newly unlocked Second Light skill panel.

It was much bigger than he rembered, with double the skills. Half of them were dark magic, which explained it. Every skill was now labelled light or dark to differentiate. Except one thing didn’t make sense...

[Tornt - Convergence Skill: 0/20]

[Summon an orb of equilibrium at the targeted location. Range, cast ti, and mana cost scale with various stats.]

[Note: Can only be used while in Convergence.]

[Locked.]

[Command Grab: 500 Int Required.]

[Command Push: 1000 Int Required.]

What was this...?

Lumi had already expected new skills from the dark side of Alton’s magic. This was not that. What, exactly, was Convergence? It was a third term added to where there should only be two.

Now that spells were labelled by their affinity, a light spell looked like this.

[Lance of Light - Light Skill: 0/20]

[Creates several homing lances forward.]

As for a dark skill, it was indeed labelled so.

[Void Sphere - Dark Skill: 0/20]

[Active channel skill - requires concentration]

[Creates a void radiating with destruction. Can be moved with active focus. Losing focus will result in skill termination.]

If that was the case, then the existence of the alleged Convergence skills was an anomaly he did not yet understand. He began reading through the rest of Second Light, but found no explanation in their descriptions.

He shifted the tab to First Light to see if there were any unexpected differences. It looked identical to the last ti he checked. He shifted to the Beginner skills, then finally the Core Skills.

There he saw the difference. Several new entries had materialized, presumably from his advancent to Second Rank.

He found it curious that they were located in Core Skills rather than Second Light, if their existence was triggered by his rank advancent. It must be because they were closely related to the fact he had unlocked the dark magic portion of Alton’s path.

He began viewing them.

[Light Mastery - Light Passive]

[Available only in Light Mode]

[All light magic attacks will inflict an additional hit at 50% strength. All light spells cast will heal the user for ~1% of their max HP per cast, efficiency varying on the exact spell.]

"What." Lumi’s eyes went wide. He had never achieved this. He had gone through Second Rank, Third Rank, Fourth Rank, and stood with demigods in his past life. He had a deep understanding of light magic. Not once had he seen sothing like this.

Even when he was free from the system, he had never found a way to buff himself with such a powerful passive. It went against the basics of magic he knew. How could one simply materialize a secondary hit which would also heal the user?

Where did the energy to do so co from? The passive indicated no magic cost. Lumi imdiately rose up from his seat, determined to find a place to test this. He took a deep breath to calm down, and sat back down.

The skill was only available in light mode. He didn’t know what that was. The magic system that he knew from Alton had no such modes. If he wanted answers, he knew where he had to check.

He sat on the floor in the lotus position, closed his eyes, and accessed his mind...

He returned to his mind palace once more, viewing the new section of dark magic books available to him.

"Void Sphere."

He pushed it aside.

"Dark Blessing."

That was not it, either. He continued shuffling through the books until he found one that looked exactly like what he needed.

"Convergence."

He got comfortable and began reading.

...

Four years. That was how long he had spent in Masteria in his past life. For three and a half years, he had been a light magician.

Everyone felt so sort of pride. Usually, it was tied to a talent or knowledge. A programr might feel prideful over their skillset. A sports star might feel pride over their ability. Anyone could feel pride, even over sothing as simple as a baking recipe.

Lumi was no exception.

Even if he logically understood it was roughly equal to every other magician path, he couldn’t help but feel pride over his understanding of light magic.

It was what he had dedicated years to. He rembered the days he spent studying magic after freeing himself from the system.

It was not a casual affair, studying for a few hours a day. He had spent many months putting in twenty or more hours every single day on straight, focused study and practice.

Even if he had accepted it logically, he had yet to emotionally process the implications of Alton using dark magic. Reading Convergence, he finally understood.

Even with over ten thousand hours of straight study, he had understood nothing.
