Highway 7, about 8 kiloters from Bara Town.
The return convoy led by Eddie was speeding wildly down Highway 7 toward Mosul.
Acting as the Vanguard Team for the convoy were three BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles. Although these things have thin armor, within the 1515 Ard Forces, they're considered reliable and capable.
Most importantly, these vehicles have a 30mm 2A28 smoothbore cannon and a 7.62mm PKT machine gun mounted on the roof, which can quickly form a powerful firepower net to suppress enemies during blockades and ambushes, giving ti for the following forces to deploy their formations.
The radio in the command vehicle, a BTR-70PK, was filled with the noisy confirmations of locations from various vehicle units.
"Watch out for suspicious spots on both sides of the highway, keep an eye on those dirt mounds and building ruins..."
The leader of the Vanguard Team, inside the third armored vehicle, continuously scanned the terrain on both sides through observation ports, while reminding the other vehicles in the Vanguard Team to stay alert over the radio.
Previously, they excelled at ambushes; now, they were the ones being ambushed.
The hunter sotis becos the prey.
Outside the vehicles, it was pitch black. The night vision equipnt inside the vehicles allowed them to see so of the surroundings. Though these old Russian night vision devices weren't advanced, at least they prevented them from being blind.
However, the Grim Reaper's first greeting ca not from guns and cannons, but from beneath the ground.
"Boom!!!"
A thunderous explosion suddenly erupted!
A burst of black smoke and dirt erupted from under the track of the leading BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle on its left side!
The TM-62 anti-tank mine, with over 7.5 kilograms of TNT equivalent, which had been buried on the highway, was precisely detonated.
The intense explosion instantly tore apart the BMP-1's four left-side road wheels along with its track, scattering them!
The fragnted tal track pieces shot out like deadly shrapnel, making a clattering sound on the pickup truck following behind, with sparks flying.
The over 13-ton vehicle body sharply tilted to the left, with the steel track sprawled out like a dead snake on the ground, completely blocking the narrow highway that barely allowed two vehicles to pass side by side.
"Screech——!"
"Bang!"
The harsh sounds of ergency braking and the dull thud of vehicles rear-ending occurred in succession.
The vast convoy was instantly thrown into chaos and congestion, with the following vehicles stopping urgently, so almost veering off the road.
"Landmine! We've hit a mine! The lead vehicle is disabled!"
"Vehicles at the front of the convoy, quickly spread out, don't crowd together!"
"Fire teams, search the roadsides for the enemy; suppress them for . Pickup team personnel, dismount and charge, tear those heretics apart!"
"Engineers! Engineer squad, go clear the mines! Quick! Quick!"
Inside the command vehicle, Eddie grabbed the transmitter, his voice distorted with urgency and anger echoing throughout the entire convoy over the radio.
Two engineers with mine detectors and explosive tubes quickly jumped off the truck following behind, bending low as they attempted to approach the disabled BMP-1 to examine the minefield situation.
At that mont—
"Bang!"
A crisp gunshot pierced through the brief chaos.
The bullet ca from a listone ridge about 400 ters to the right of the highway.
One engineer who had just crouched down to deploy the mine detector suddenly jerked his head backward, falling straight over, a horrifying bullet hole appearing on his forehead.
The 7.62x54mm R round from an SVD sniper rifle instantly claid his life.
Almost the sa second as the gunshot, an unusual whistling sound rang out again.
"Whoosh——boom!"
An RPG-7 rocket, trailing an orange-red flare, shot from the bush on the left hillside, with a deathly whistle, crashing straight into the side of the turret of the disabled BMP-1!
Boom——
A fireball erupted on the turret.
Though the Old Russians' armored vehicle had relatively thin side armor, the projectile armor thickness was quite considerate, along with a high angle of inclination, the rocket didn't completely penetrate the armor.
Although it barely blocked the armor-piercing round, preventing penetration, the massive explosive impact and splattering tal streams still caused the vehicle to violently shake, damaging the observation equipnt on the turret, and left the crew inside dizzy and disoriented.
Imdiately, more precise single shots and short bursts rang out from the high ground on both sides.
Infantry of the "Liberation Forces," equipped with AK-74M and PKM, relied on carefully constructed simple positions, beginning to pour bullets at the exposed vehicles and personnel on the highway.
Bullets hitting vehicle steel plates and the ground sparked and kicked up smoke and dust in succession.
"Sniper! Right side high ground!"
"There's an ambush on the left side too!"
"Machine gunners! Suppress! Suppress both sides of the hills for !"
Eddie looked out through the observation window at the chaotic scene outside, listening to the various units' exclamations in his headset, forcing himself to stay calm.
"Don't get bogged down! All vehicles that can move, leave the highway imdiately, loop around on the Gobi Desert, attack their positions from the rear and flank! All vehicles maintain spacing, watch out for mines!"
He knew that every minute of delay here increased the risk of Mosul falling.
They had to, at any cost, resolve the battle as quickly as possible.
Judging from the density of gunfire and intensity of the attack, the number of attackers shouldn't be too large.
His convoy was long enough, with enough vehicles that the enemy, without an overwhelming advantage in firepower, couldn't attack the ends and hit the middle.
The DShK heavy machine guns and ZPU anti-aircraft machine guns on the ard pickups began to wildly spray on both hillside slopes, attempting to cover potential ambush points with barrages.
The enormous convoy was forced to clumsily descend from the roadbed like a group of awkward beetles, entering the uneven, rocky Gobi desert.
The vehicle speed sharply dropped, and the violent jolts left the soldiers in the vehicles struggling, and the formation began to scatter.
