"What's up?"
Song Heping was still groggy from sleep, but the way Jiang Feng scread like a slaughtered pig alerted him that sothing big must have happened.
He hurriedly opened the door and, seeing Jiang Feng's shocked face, couldn't help but scold, "Stay calm in the face of big events! What's there to panic about! The sky isn't falling!"
There was no sound of gunfire around; obviously, they weren't under attack here.
Except for death, nothing is a big deal.
What's there to be panicky about?
"Look!"
Jiang Feng handed over the newspaper he was holding.
Song Heping glanced at it; it was a morning paper, used to pass the ti during breakfast.
He took it and his gaze fell upon it.
Then even his eyes bulged.
"Holy shit!"
He cursed in utter shock.
The huge headline on the front page read —
"Gang clash, police station attacked, Gulf Group boss Sanchez lynched from a lamppost!"
"Damn it all to hell!"
Song Heping blurted out in Cantonese, a habit he picked up from his comrades in the army.
Sanchez was hanged from a lamppost!?
WTF!?
How is that possible!
He quickly looked at the large photo in the headline.
The photo showed an overpass with a row of bodies hanging beneath it, all strung up by the neck and dangling in mid-air from the railings.
The bodies were all charred black, turned into roasted at. Although Song Heping had seen Sanchez before, he couldn't identify him from this kind of photo.
"Is he really dead?"
He couldn't believe it.
This was Sanchez, the boss of the Gulf Group, the second largest cartel in xico. How could he turn into a corpse overnight?
"The news says so, and it's been broadcasting on morning TV. If you don't believe it, co down and see for yourself."
Without even washing his face, Song Heping hurried back to his room, grabbed his phone, and went downstairs.
The lobby on the first floor was filled with people, White Bear, Hunter, and others, all gathered there.
Everyone was focused intently on the large-screen TV, their eyes nearly popping out.
The news was indeed broadcasting about the incident of Sanchez being hanged from a lamppost.
After a brief watch, it roughly recapped last night's retaliatory massive assault by the entire Los Zetas Organization.
They launched more than a dozen raids in various places across Pamolipas State and Leon State, the stronghold of the Gulf Group, and from the looks of the attacks, they were almost simultaneous, all between three and five in the morning.
The targets included police stations, SWAT headquarters, and the residences of three high-ranking mbers of the Gulf Group.
Among them, Gulf Group boss Sanchez was killed in his heavily fortified ho. According to nearby reports, the attackers used heavy weapons during the firefight, including mortars, RPGs, and even recoilless rifles…
Eventually, Sanchez was caught while trying to flee, his body dragged out of the car and taken away.
The police also suffered heavy losses; the highest commander and deputy involved in last night's siege were ambushed while returning to the police station after conducting on-site coordination. One was even sent to heaven by a direct rocket hit at the police station entrance.
"These guys are really crazy!"
White Bear couldn't help but give a thumbs-up.
"Boss, the last ti they attacked us, was it our luck or our tactical level that was high?"
Hunter snorted coldly, "It was the boss's proper arrangent. Without those anesthetic gases, do you think we could have survived that day?"
White Bear thought back and imdiately felt a chill down his spine.
That day, after dealing with the attack led by Lascano's elite raid squad of dozens of n, Song Heping didn't think much of it at first.
Now, looking at it, it wasn't that Lascano lacked skills, nor that Los Zetas were incompetent in combat; they just t an opponent who was even more cunning.
While everyone was bustling with various opinions on the matter, Song Heping fell silent.
He picked up the phone and walked into the dining room, and dialed Shorty.
"Answer the phone... answer the phone..."
He muttered to himself.
According to his guess, it shouldn't be too soon for Lascano to start troubling Shorty.
Now, his biggest enemy turned out to be the four major families.
With Sanchez dead, that leaves the other three families who had already agreed to join forces.
Once Lascano gains support from the other three families, his spearhead will quickly turn towards himself and Shorty.
This is sothing Song Heping absolutely does not want to see.
Originally, he thought to let Sanchez and Lascano fight each other to death, but it turned out that Sanchez was a nobody.
Overnight, he was wiped out.
It makes one sigh; xico is indeed a jungle of the survival of the fittest.
Whoever is weak, gets to et God.
Fortunately, Shorty soon answered the phone.
"Song, have you seen the news?"
"I have."
"That madman Lascano!"
Song Heping could tell from Shorty's cursing how panicked he was.
"You sound very scared," Song Heping said.
Shorty didn't shy away from admitting his fear: "Who wouldn't be scared! I'm tough, but I'm also afraid of madn! He's gone crazy! Do you know how many police and gang mbers he killed last night? All were high-ranking! This is declaring war on both the governnt and the gang at the sa ti."
"That might not be the case..."
Song Heping walked to the fridge, opened the door, pulled out a bottle of Coke, twisted off the cap, and sat back down at the dining table.
He was thinking.
This was a habit.
Calmness is required in major events.
Within a very short ti, Song Heping had already made a rough analysis of this sudden major incident.
"Not the case?! Haven't you seen TV?! The president has already spoken, planning to exterminate Los Zetas!"
"You should be even less panicked then," Song Heping said. "Let the military and police take him down, aren't you just reaping the benefits?!"
He looked towards the hall.
Sure enough, the president was speaking on TV, looking passionate and vigorous.
"Do you think the president is a fool?! He's sharper than anyone!" Shorty said. "Don't be fooled by his righteous rhetoric on TV, he would rather have us gangs fight amongst ourselves to reduce our numbers, and then he cleans up the aftermath. His speech is just to deceive the public. Just watch, in the coming days, will there be any real action from the military or police?!"
"I know, they will only strengthen security, they won't really engage in a death struggle with the Los Zetas Organization."
"Then aren't you worried?! Now Lascano has beco a mad dog, he would pull us down even in his dying breath! Now, the major families are too scared to provoke him."
"You don't worry. In Lascano's list, you and I are definitely at the bottom," Song Heping very calmly predicted a turn in events: "If I'm not wrong, he's just gambling with his life now."
"Gambling with his life?" Shorty asked. "What do you an?"
"I think Lascano's available resources and manpower are running out, he's going all-in," Song Heping said. "Desperately killing Sanchez and directly battling the police, it looks fierce now but won't last long. Warfare is about resources; how many people do several major families combined have? How many does one Los Zetas Organization have? Even if he fiercely fights you all to the end, it will not end well."
"But he did just that!" Shorty said.
Song Heping said, "If I'm not wrong, his next move is to seek alliance with the three major families, using Sanchez's death as a threat to their leaders. If he gains support from the other three major families, he could then reverse the situation to swallow the Gulf Group, and then we would be next, so I told you don't panic."
"Since that's the case..."
Shorty said, "Are you suggesting we should also take action against him now? But once we do, the other families will definitely stand by and wait to take us down after we clash head-on with Lascano. It's a dead end, no one wants to make the first move, Lascano saw this point clearly."
"I'm still saying, don't panic, Shorty," Song Heping confidently said: "Sanchez's death indeed caught us off guard, I overestimated him. However, moving forward, do as I suggest, it's also ti for you to co out and handle so things."
