Chapter 1290: Chapter One Thousand Two Hundred Seventy-Three Scare Them to Death
Eileen slamd the brakes and started to turn the car around. As the vehicle began moving back, Frey shouted urgently, “One rocket and this will all be over.”
Gao Yang snapped his fingers and said loudly, “Eileen, stay in the car. Andy He and I will provide cover. Frey, fire the rocket and then we’re out of here.”
Andy He loaded a fresh drum onto the machine gun and asked, “Blowing up both the vehicle and its occupants? There are definitely people in that truck.”
Frey shrugged indifferently and said, “What, should we ask the people in the garbage truck to kindly step out before we blow it up?”
Eileen smirked and said, “Guys, whether people die or not makes a big difference. For the Russians, if soone dies, it becos a huge problem. If no one dies, at least they won’t completely lose their minds.”
Gao Yang waved his hand and said, “Let’s play it by ear. If there aren’t many people in the truck, we start with warning shots to scare them off before using the rocket. We’ve got no personal grudge against them. There’s no need to kill everyone, especially since these guys might very well be from Signal Flag. Let’s keep a little restraint.”
Andy He chuckled and said, “Boss, you’re too soft-hearted. You’re not even acting like a rcenary.”
Gao Yang scoffed and said, “It’s called humanity. Do you get it? Humanity. You heartless bastard. As long as we achieve our goal, why take unnecessary lives? Besides, we know quite a few folks in Signal Flag. We’ve got a decent relationship with them. If these guys are indeed from Signal Flag, there’s no need to force their hand over sothing avoidable.”
Andy He grinned and said, “Don’t get wrong. I’m not suggesting wiping them out. Don’t forget—Signal Flag folks respect a lot, you know.”
The entire Satan crew actually did have connections with several Signal Flag mbers, and the relationships were pretty good. If soone’s chasing you down and firing at you, you respond with whatever you’ve got for survival—that’s inevitable. But if you hold the upper hand and are just targeting interference sources, it’s better to avoid unnecessary killing.
At the end of the day, Gao Yang just wasn’t ruthless enough to completely sever all connections. Not to ntion that he’d fought side by side with Peter in Syria, where Peter had even taught him hand-to-hand combat. Plus, Gao Yang had established a solid rapport with Signal Flag operatives there not long ago. Turning around now to take a full-on lethal approach against them would undeniably weigh on his conscience.
Of course, the people in the garbage truck could belong to other units, but it was highly likely they were from Signal Flag. That re possibility was enough for Gao Yang to reconsider any lethal action.
Waving his hand once more, Gao Yang said in a deep voice, “Let’s assess the situation first. If it’s not too risky, scare them off and then fire the rocket. If we don’t have any other choice… well, there’s nothing to be said. Just fire.”
Frey muttered under his breath, “We’re almost there. It’s just up ahead at the intersection.”
As Eileen brought the car to a halt, Gao Yang, Andy He, and Frey stepped out, while Eileen began to slowly turn the vehicle around. Gao Yang grabbed his rifle, Frey picked up the rocket launcher, and Andy He readied the machine gun as the three slowly approached the street corner, hidden behind a line of buildings.
In a low voice, Gao Yang asked, “How far is the garbage truck from this intersection?”
Frey thought for a mont and answered quietly, “Probably two or three hundred ters. I couldn’t see clearly, but it’s not too far.”
Without saying anything further, Gao Yang moved closer to the corner of the wall. After signalling for everyone to stop, he peeked out.
He spotted the garbage truck about 150 ters away. There didn’t appear to be anyone nearby, and apart from the truck, the road was completely empty. This sight gave Gao Yang so relief.
The jamr vehicle belonged to the Russians. Although most people in Cria favored Russia, the territory technically remained Ukrainian, and the Russians had to tread lightly in this regard. This ant disguising the jamming equipnt and avoiding stationing a large number of guards around the vehicle.
Gao Yang saw three people in the truck’s cab but had no idea if there was anyone inside the sealed compartnt at the back. He also didn’t know if the jamming equipnt simply required activation or manual operation.
After a couple of glances, Gao Yang pulled back, turned to the others, and said, “There are only three guys, and the truck is facing straight toward us. Taking them out would be easy, but if we fire the rocket from here, it would only hit the cab. It might not destroy the jamr equipnt at the back. The angle for a side shot is too narrow, making ricochets a real concern.”
Frey frowned and said, “What if those Russians refuse to leave and use the garbage truck as cover? That’d be tricky.”
Gao Yang replied confidently, “Relax. They won’t get the chance. If they’re smart, they’ll stay far away. If they’re dumb and try to use the truck for cover, then that’s on them. At least we gave them a chance, didn’t we?”
Andy He asked with a grin, “So, what’s your plan?”
Gao Yang activated the night vision device on his rifle and smirked, “Scare the hell out of them.”
Andy He laughed and said, “Can I watch you work?”
“Knock yourself out. You’ll be perfectly safe.”
With that, Gao Yang raised his gun and carefully leaned part of his body out from behind the wall.
Inside the truck, two n were smoking. Occasionally, they would stretch their hands out of the window to flick off ash. The person sitting in the middle seed to be resting with his head on the seatback.
Gao Yang aid his rifle, waiting for the driver on the left to extend his cigarette hand out of the window, and then pulled the trigger.
With a sharp crack, Gao Yang adjusted his aim. When the person on the right brought the cigarette close to his face, Gao Yang fired again.
The first man paused after putting the cigarette to his mouth, then flicked it away before slumping over. The second man stared dumbfounded at the bullet hole on the windshield, glanced at the cigarette in his hand, and then bolted out of the truck, leaving the door wide open.
The driver jumped out with a gun in hand, but before he could raise it, Gao Yang fired again, shooting the weapon out of his grasp. The man spun around and fled to the rear of the truck. anwhile, the person in the middle seat also exited but made the mistake of drawing a rifle. Gao Yang quickly shot the gun out of his hands, forcing the last man to flee as well.
“Haha! They finally got the ssage! If they aren’t complete idiots, they’ll realize you went easy on them, Boss. Look at them bolt—they’re running far and fast.”
The three n in the garbage truck weren’t sticking around to wait for death. After firing strategic shots aid at cigarettes and guns, anyone with half a brain could tell Gao Yang was holding back.
Gao Yang kept his gun trained ahead and said softly, “Dragon Knight, cover our rear. I’ll watch the front. Little Fly, blow up that truck.”
Frey hefted the rocket launcher and ran forward, while the three escapees were busy sprinting away without even a backward glance.
After covering a few dozen ters and ensuring the angle was right to avoid any ricochets, Frey fired an RPG-27 at the garbage truck.
With a loud explosion, sparks flew from the truck’s rear compartnt. While it didn’t burst into flas, whatever equipnt inside was undoubtedly destroyed beyond repair.
By the ti Frey fired, Gao Yang was already 99% sure that the truck was the interference source. The successful impact confird it. Overjoyed, Gao Yang shouted into the radio, “Test the comms!”
“Signal’s clear!”
“Excellent! Get back here now!”
Frey dashed back. Covering the 100-plus ters took less than 20 seconds. Once he returned, Gao Yang motioned with his hand and whispered, “Move out!”
All three sprinted back to the car, quickly piling in. As Eileen started driving off, Gao Yang closed the car door after they covered so distance. Grabbing the radio, he called, “Bigfoot, this is Penguin Baby. Do you copy? Over.”
He was deeply concerned about whether Glolov could hear him, as their local communications had been restored, but they were still far from the ambush site. It was possible comms in that area were still jamd.
Cackling electromagnetic noise filled the line before Glolov’s voice ca through urgently, “Penguin Baby, we copy! We’re experiencing severe electromagnetic interference. What’s going on?”
Relieved, Gao Yang responded quickly, “Russian jamming! Damn it, forget it. The plan to spook them worked too well. We’ve stirred up a giant python and got chased by Russian Special Forces. We’ve shaken them off and are heading back now. Listen up. This operation has caused a huge stir. Be prepared for combat and to lose contact again.”
“Understood. One more thing—Osprey’s control signal was jamd, and it activated its failsafe. We’ve lost track of where it went. Jason is searching for it, but we might lose Osprey. Over.”
“Understood. Locate Osprey as quickly as possible. You don’t have much ti. If we aren’t back in 30 minutes, withdraw to the second rendezvous point. Repeat, if we’re not back in 30 minutes, head to the second rendezvous point. Over.”
“Copy that, Penguin Baby. Over.”
“Penguin Baby” was Glolov’s callsign, while “Osprey” referred to Jason’s drone. The loss of Osprey ant Jason’s surveillance drone, which had been monitoring a wide area, had activated its return-to-base failsafe after losing its control signal. While this feature was advanced for military drones, it wasn’t always reliable—it was still an electronic device. But now that communication had been restored, as long as the drone wasn’t damaged, it should be retrievable.
After exchanging critical updates, Gao Yang hurriedly made a satellite call. Once Krulney answered, he said urgently, “We’ve found Victor. It’s real—we’ve located him. The Russians’ elite units are here, and we’ve clashed with them. They’ve started jamming communications, which could cut out at any mont. Tell anything important you’ve got now!” (To be continued.
