Capítulo 1621: Chapter 1600: A Good Scapegoat
Gao Yang quietly found Antonio in a room set up like a study, while Antonio was standing in front of a floor-safe in deep thought.
Upon hearing footsteps, Antonio didn’t look up and said softly, “What’s up?”
Gao Yang coughed lightly and said, “How’s it going?”
Antonio responded in a deep voice, “It’s very complicated. This is a safe with a combination of electronic and chanical locks, and the electronic password is twelve digits, while the chanical lock’s password is definitely different from the electronic one because it only requires six digits. Also, this safe needs a key to open. Two passwords and one key; you need to et all three conditions to open it. What’s inside must be very important.”
Gao Yang said quietly, “Oh, what’s here is definitely docunts upon first glance. It’s useless to us, so should we just leave now? What do you think?”
Antonio turned to look at Gao Yang, appearing sowhat angry. He said softly, “You got what you wanted, but you have to let open the rest of the safes. That’s what we agreed.”
Gao Yang felt a bit embarrassed since he really didn’t plan to keep his promise, so he said awkwardly, “Uh, I’m willing to pay you Two Million Dollars, can you not open it?”
Antonio frowned and said, “You know I’m not here just for the money. What’s drawing is these safes.”
Gao Yang, looking embarrassed, said, “How about I buy you a similar one, and you can take your ti studying it at ho? Is that okay?”
Antonio shook his head and said softly, “Opening my own safe and opening soone else’s safe—can that feel the sa?”
After he spoke, Antonio said impatiently, “You got what you wanted, you can leave. I’ll stay here and open it at my leisure.”
Gao Yang had made promises to ensure Antonio’s safety, to both Antonio and the cleaners. Leaving Antonio behind didn’t make sense at all. Gao Yang sighed and reluctantly said, “If you insist, then fine, we’ll wait for you. But can you hurry? We can’t continue waiting endlessly.”
Antonio thought for a while and then, looking pained, said, “Reports say there are six safes here, but I’ve only found this one. There’s another that I can’t find—the hidden one is the most crucial. If ti is pressing, I can focus on opening that hidden one. F**k, I need six hours, at the minimum.”
Gao Yang was startled and shouted, “Six hours? Are you kidding ?”
Antonio insisted firmly, “I have to open it. No, if I try and can’t open it, then there’s nothing I can do. But to leave without trying—that’s impossible.”
Gao Yang felt a headache coming on. He rubbed his head vigorously, then sighed deeply and said to Antonio, “Alright! I’ll stay here with you and give you six hours. I’ll wait for you to open the safe, but once the ti is up, we must leave imdiately!”
Antonio nodded and said, “Thanks, I’m surprised you made this decision.”
Gao Yang, feeling helpless, said, “No need to be surprised. I’m always true to my word. But I’ll stay behind to help and protect you, letting my people leave first. If they don’t go, I won’t feel secure. It’s hard to co by that gun, and if sothing unexpected happens, I can’t afford it. Let them leave, hide my gun, and then co back for us—is that okay?”
Antonio shrugged and said, “If you’re not afraid, then I’m even less afraid.”
Gao Yang exhaled and then took out a few items from the small bag he carried with him, saying to Antonio, “Do you know how to install surveillance devices?”
Antonio frowned and said, “No, I only open safes; I don’t do espionage.”
Gao Yang smiled and said, “If you can’t install surveillance devices, can you make it look like soone has searched the place and restored it, then stolen so other valuables, just to cover up their real intent? Can you manage that?”
Antonio nodded and said, “That’s no problem, it’s simple. But why do that?”
Gao Yang said straightforwardly, “Of course, it’s to find soone else to bla. We’ve taken so many things, we need a scapegoat to shift attention. This place looks like an office, and I’d bet the safe contains docunts. I think setting it up here is fine. Whether or not you open the safe, let people know soone tried to open it. Alright, continue with your work. I’ll find so hidden corners to place the surveillance devices.”
Antonio nodded, but then seed to rember sothing, looking curious as he said, “To distract attention with surveillance devices, who are you trying to bla? I an, who do you want to take the fall? It won’t affect us, right?”
Antonio’s ‘us’ referred to the cleaners.
Gao Yang waved his hand with a smile and said, “Of course not. For a scapegoat, of course, we target the Russians.”
Antonio looked at Gao Yang and suddenly said, “How are you going to do it? I’m curious, how can installing a few surveillance devices make the Russians take the fall?”
Gao Yang shrugged and laughed, “Well, when it cos to the Russians, actually it’s the KGB. I know a few KGB agents, learned so things from them—like their habits of installing surveillance devices, how they conduct searches. I plan to imitate their thods and place a few surveillance devices here. By the way, these surveillance devices cost a lot, they’re genuine ones used by the KGB, very hard to obtain, you know.”
Antonio chuckled and said in a deep voice, “Looks like you’ve made quite the preparations. Alright, I’ll do my work, you do yours.”
Gao Yang nodded and began finding spots to install surveillance devices. Such work done by Yake would be flawless, and even Number Thirteen would do adequately. But since neither of them was available, Gao Yang had to reluctantly handle it himself. Even if he couldn’t be as ticulous as a real operative, this scapegoating strategy was bound to attract the KGB’s attention.
As for finding a scapegoat among other countries, Gao Yang couldn’t prepare in a rush. So, throwing the bla on the Russians ca naturally for him; with the thods and even scapegoating toolkits fully prepared, it was convenient to pin this on the Russians—it was simple and easy.
Plus, given the current situation in Ukraine, the Russians are most suited to take the fall; the timing, environnt, and personnel are all optimal, making Russia the perfect scapegoat.
After finishing with the surveillance devices, Gao Yang planned to have Taylor and Number Thirteen leave first, so he called Taylor and Karima over to help with the installation.
