Capítulo 1820: Chapter 1799: Loyalty
eting with Shava is not a particularly simple matter; Gao Yang has to make many arrangents to make it happen.
Together with Yarebin, they arrived at a relatively safe place in the city center, albeit in a sowhat remote area. It’s a very old neighborhood, with roads leading in all directions that make it easy to escape using smaller streets. The reason for choosing such a place is that if Gao Yang encounters Special Forces trying to capture or kill him, he might have a chance to fight back. However, if soone decides to hit him with a bomb or missile, then he’s as good as done.
To avoid being targeted from the air, Gao Yang went to the city center, using the presence of many people as his Shield. He thought that even if the Aricans discovered him in the city center, they wouldn’t dare hit him with a Laser-Guided Bomb.
Finding a safe spot, then Tarta went to see Shava first. After eting, Tarta would naturally make an assessnt of Shava’s reliability. If he felt there were no issues, he would then bring Shava to see Gao Yang. If there were issues, he would either eliminate Shava or, worse yet, if Shava had indeed betrayed them, and a trap awaited Tarta, then Tarta might end up buried there himself.
But Shava, as he claid, did not betray Gao Yang. This was Tarta’s assessnt. Thus, after eting Shava, Tarta would lead Shava in a convoluted path to prevent anyone from following him and finally deliver him to Gao Yang’s presence.
Tarta took Shava on a two-hour detour, driving, walking, using public transportation, purposefully entering and exiting various buildings in disguise to avoid being tailed by drones from above. Since being tracked by a drone previously, Tarta has paid special attention to eyes in the sky.
Shava looked really miserable; one of his eyes was severely bloodshot, and he limped as he walked, needing Tarta’s support. His hands were haphazardly wrapped in gauze, but traces of blood could still be seen at the finger tips.
“Boss…”
Shava’s voice was initially hoarse due to damage to his vocal cords from a bullet in his neck. Now, it was even more hoarse, sounding like two tiles scraping against each other.
Gao Yang stood there and gently patted Shava on the shoulder. However, before he could say his heartfelt words, Shava staggered to the side from his pat.
Gao Yang pulled a chair over and said softly, “Sit and talk.”
After having Shava sit down, Gao Yang sighed and said, “You’ve been through a lot. I’m sorry for making you take such a detour to get here. I’m being closely watched and have to be cautious.”
Shava nodded and said, “I understand; it’s a very critical ti.”
Gao Yang looked at Shava’s fingers and frowned, “What happened to your hand?”
Shava grinned, speaking softly, “My fingers are fine; they pulled seven of my fingernails out.”
Gao Yang’s expression turned grim, but after thinking for a mont, he said in a low voice, “We’ll have to let this go. I’ve reached an agreent with Poloneshenko; he won’t cause us any more trouble, and he’ll turn a blind eye to the existence of the White Shark Gang. The only requirent is not to go too far and provoke outrage. So, we can’t seek revenge now.”
Shava nodded and then said with a smile, “Revenge? I hadn’t considered revenge. Honestly, I’m amazed to co out. I knew you would rescue , but I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly. After this incident, the White Shark Gang has no more competition in Kiev.”
After expressing his satisfaction, Shava then showed a troubled expression, “Boss, I ca to apologize to you. This event was my fault; it shouldn’t have happened. Last ti, we smuggled so stuff, and you gave a big bonus. After distributing it to the crew, I felt I should reward a few hard-working brothers. So I gave them a few bottles of wine we took from the cellar last ti, one each. But one idiot took his gang with the wine to a restaurant and bragged incessantly. We thought Poloneshenko hadn’t pursued the matter, but he was actually investigating the whole ti. A policeman spotted him drinking, imdiately arrested him, and that was last night. By this morning, they had moved to arrest everyone.”
Gao Yang nodded and said softly, “I see, it’s a relief it’s not what I feared the most. But Shava, I’ve told you many tis, be careful now. Keep the wine hidden and enjoy it yourself.”
Gao Yang was reprimanding Shava, who responded with a look of remorse, “Yes, I have been too careless lately.”
Gao Yang waved his hand and said softly, “What’s past is past; no need to bring it up again. What happened to the first person they caught?”
Shava hesitated for a mont, then said with a forlorn expression, “He suffered terribly. By early morning, he couldn’t hold out anymore and confessed everything he knew. However, he only ntioned us using a car to transport stuff to Poloneshenko’s place and nothing about smuggling plans, as they hadn’t asked him. He caused the trouble by showing off, and he indeed betrayed the White Shark Gang. According to the rules, I should kill him. But, Boss, I’m here to plead on his behalf. Can you spare his life?”
Looking up at Gao Yang, Shava lowered his head again and said anxiously, “I know the rules, I really do, but he confessed because he couldn’t take it anymore. I know how that feels. He’s been with from the beginning and has always been reliable, diligent in his work, and has never made a mistake. This ti, he deserves to die, but he’s truly my best brother, and I… I can’t do it…”
Gao Yang said in a low voice, “Who is it?”
Shava said with difficulty, “Alyosha.”
Gao Yang imdiately said, “Oh, Alyosha, I know him. He even gave a lighter. This guy really is quite reckless. He’s not really suited for this kind of work to begin with. Shava, this is your fault; you used the wrong person. Alyosha is good at fighting, but you let him be involved in these secretive tasks, that’s your mistake.”
Shava nodded, “Yes, I shouldn’t have let him be involved in such ticulous work, but he was very reliable, so I…”
He rose from humble beginnings, leading a group of poor brothers who weren’t afraid to fight and kill, and made a na for themselves. After making it, Shava was very good to the brothers who fought alongside him, so Shava was soone who valued loyalty, and Gao Yang really admired that about Shava. This made him willing to support Shava rather than anyone else.
Loyalty was Shava’s strength. Since he admired this strength in Shava, Gao Yang wouldn’t force Shava to do sothing disloyal, so he said in a deep voice, “Shava, how to deal with Alyosha, that’s your business. You don’t need to co to . I trust you. Do what you think is right, use whatever thod you deem suitable. If you think Alyosha should still die, then kill him. If he shouldn’t die, let him live well. You decide for yourself.”
Shava looked up at Gao Yang, surprised, “Can I?”
Gao Yang smiled and said, “Of course, necessary punishnt is needed. Make sure he rembers this lesson, but killing Alyosha over this issue would be too much. Of course, if Alyosha did sothing unforgivable, then no matter how good your relationship is, if he has to die, he has to die. That’s my opinion.”
Shava nodded repeatedly, “Thank you, thank you, I know what to do. I must teach Alyosha a good lesson. Of course, I also made a mistake in this matter, but still, thank you, boss.”
Gao Yang said with a smile, “The reason you insisted on seeing was to plead for Alyosha, right? Brother, I don’t intend to make every decision for you. The White Shark Gang is yours. You don’t have to ask specifically about everything. Your people, your business, you should be in charge.”
Shava chuckled lightly, “This is different; it almost ruined your big plan.”
Gao Yang nodded, then said in a low voice, “Things are pretty complicated on my end recently, and eting you is also dangerous. If there’s nothing else, you should hurry back and get so rest. This ti was quite a ss for you; you need to recuperate for a few days.”
All of Gao Yang’s important things were with Shava, like the blueprints he had recently acquired through cunning ans, but Gao Yang didn’t ntion a word about it. Trust is trust. No need to say it. If he no longer trusted Shava, he wouldn’t say anything either; he’d just take his stuff and leave, completely abandoning Shava.
Shava stood up and said quietly, “Alright, I’ll go now, boss. Take care.”
Tarta ca in from outside and helped Shava leave. Gao Yang took a deep breath, picked up the coffee on the table and took a sip, saying in a low voice, “Let’s go, it’s ti to retreat again. I hate this feeling, like a mouse hiding everywhere.”
Yarebin stood up, looking helpless, “Again a completely different choice from mine. I’m really curious why I appreciate you.”
Gao Yang laughed, “It’s simple. Loyalty is unnecessary for intelligence agencies; it’s an emotion that should be discarded because you don’t need it as a core cohesive force. But for , loyalty is precious. Take Shava, for example. First, being with has to have enough benefits, but besides pure benefits, there has to be sothing else, right?”
Yarebin said seriously, “Fear is very effective.”
Gao Yang nodded, “That’s right. Interests plus fear are the most basic ans of control, but Yarebin, for people like us, fear is actually not very reliable. How do you threaten soone with life who doesn’t care and isn’t afraid of death? They’re just gang mbers; don’t expect them to et the standards of professionally trained agents. You receive deeper training than loyalty and fear, but these gangsters don’t have it, and neither do I. So for people like and Shava, loyalty is much more effective than intimidation.”
Yarebin shrugged, “Makes sense; your level is too low.”
Gao Yang laughed, “This ti he was captured and tortured but wouldn’t betray , not because he was afraid I’d kill him, but because his loyalty to made betraying more unbearable than death. Nowadays, there are not many people who are loyal; in fact, there never were. Shava is one of the rare loyal ones, and I value this trait in him, so I have to let him keep it well.”
