Number Thirteen used his uniquely creepy stare to just glance at the prisoner for a mont, causing the prisoner to crumble.
“Your objective.”
“Close reconnaissance to guide artillery fire and observe the impact point.”
“Why didn’t you conduct a test fire?”
“We didn’t have ti; we were attacked by you.”
“Point out the location of your artillery positions on this map. Just a reminder, you still have a comrade who’s being interrogated by others. If the position you indicate differs from his, then soone among you is lying, and one of you will have a very, very bad ti. If you don’t want to be tortured, indicate the location of your artillery positions.”
After Number Thirteen finished speaking, he snapped his fingers and shouted, “Bring the map over.”
Gao Yang brought the captured map to Number Thirteen, who spread it out and gestured for the prisoner to proceed.
The prisoner studied the map for a while, trembling as he extended his finger and pointed at the map, tremblingly saying, “This is our brigade’s position, right here.”
Gao Yang frowned and said, “Brigade?”
The prisoner nodded, nervously replying, “Yes.”
Gao Yang felt sothing ominous and softly said, “Your na, unit number, and specific mission.”
“15th Independent Artillery Regint Reconnaissance Company, First Platoon, Second Lieutenant, Reconnaissance Platoon Leader, ordered to conduct reconnaissance, sir.”
Gao Yang exhaled and quietly said, “You’re from the 15th Artillery Brigade. When did your brigade arrive?”
“This evening, sir.”
“Where did you co from?”
“Lviv, sir.”
Gao Yang’s unease intensified, and he shouted sharply, “What was your previous location? Be specific!”
“Donetsk, sir. We were transferred from Lviv to Donetsk, but after arriving in Donetsk today, we were ordered urgently to proceed here, sir.”
Gao Yang exhaled and softly said, “Alright, do you know which other unit accompanied you?”
“No, sir. We arrived here this evening, and I was ordered to imdiately conduct close reconnaissance, establish a forward observation post, await orders, and prepare to provide coordinates and assess damage effects for the positions.”
Gao Yang imdiately said, “How many artillery pieces do you have?”
“Twelve 152-caliber guns, thirty-six 122-caliber guns, twenty-four 122mm rocket launchers, and twelve 120mm self-propelled mortars.”
Gao Yang’s voice changed as he spoke, becoming much sharper as he shouted, “How many groups have you sent to conduct reconnaissance? Speak quickly!”
“Six groups, sir. A platoon divided into two teams, making a total of six groups.”
Gao Yang imdiately stood up and shouted toward Yake’s direction, “Fox! Verify interrogation results!”
“Consistent!”
Upon hearing Yake say consistent, Gao Yang imdiately locked his gaze on the prisoner in front of him and shouted sharply, “When are you launching the attack? Speak!”
“We don’t know—we couldn’t possibly know—but the orders we received were to complete all tasks for the forward observation post by eleven in the evening.”
Gao Yang checked his watch and said solemnly, “Tell , how much information have you sent back?”
“Basically, all the coordinates of the forward positions have been sent back.”
Gao Yang didn’t ask further. He imdiately stood upright, grabbed the radio, and shouted, “This is Dashan! This is Dashan! Now, an order: everyone, retreat! Retreat now! Withdraw one thousand ters—no, withdraw two thousand ters. Repeat, this is Dashan. I’m ordering everyone to imdiately retreat at least two thousand ters. Report back once you receive the order. Over.”
Gao Yang didn’t even bother with code words, issuing the order directly in plain language. Pointing toward the prisoner in front of him, he shouted sharply, “Take him and retreat! Move it!”
Directly commanding down to the company level ant that the radio soon heard voices loudly saying, “Third Company of First Battalion, received, executing the order. Over.”
As various companies replied, Li Jinfang, liaising with Rebrov, shouted loudly, “Boss, the Rebrov Group has not finished its assignnt, requesting a twelve-minute delay for retreat.”
Gao Yang glanced at his watch; it was already ten-thirty.
Though he didn’t know if the 15th Artillery would indeed launch their artillery strike precisely at eleven, judging from the interrogation results, Gao Yang was inclined to believe so. Therefore, he said without hesitation, “Have them get back here imdiately—now!”
Without delay, Li Jinfang pushed the prisoner forward, shouting, “You won’t die, nor will you be tortured, but if you don’t obey, you’ll be executed imdiately. Keep up!”
The entire position retreated very quickly. At that mont, Peter, holding the captured radio, shouted while running, “The enemy is calling!”
Gao Yang slowed his pace and grabbed the prisoner, growling fiercely, “Report back that everything is normal. Try anything funny, and I’ll shoot you dead!”
The captured platoon leader hesitated, unsure what to do, when the prisoner under Yake’s watch suddenly shouted, “I’ll do it—I’ll do it—I don’t want to die!”
Gao Yang shouted, “Hurry up!”
The prisoner rushed to Peter’s side, panicked, picked up the handset from Peter’s backpack radio, took a deep breath, and calmly said, “Forward Team One reporting to headquarters, everything is normal, enemy is normal, coordinates leaked, we’re captured, fire on ! Fire on…”
Very steadily, until the latter part, the prisoner suddenly shouted in an extrely rapid voice, fury and desperation evident in his shout. Standing behind Peter, using the radio on Peter’s back to communicate with headquarters, Peter swiftly turned around, and Yake pressed him to the ground; yet the prisoner managed to say everything he needed to.
After kicking the prisoner down, Yake fired a shot and angrily said, “F**k!”
Gao Yang felt chills down his spine; he had encountered a hero—albeit one from the enemy’s side.
“Run! Full-speed retreat! Artillery strike! Artillery strike imminent! You may abandon any heavy gear that is cumberso—escape now, escape!”
Gao Yang yelled frantically into the radio, retreating within less than five minutes, still far from the safe zone.
Satan’s n started sprinting rapidly again, running for another two minutes with no action yet; just as Gao Yang wondered whether he’d ordered too hastily, explosions suddenly rang out from behind.
The artillery sound wasn’t dense, but Gao Yang knew it was just a test fire. Sure enough, in just thirty seconds, explosions rang out extrely densely.
“Rocket launchers! Those are rocket launchers! Only rocket launchers fire at this speed!”
The ground trembled, the air ripped apart, even if soone shouted beside him, Gao Yang couldn’t decipher their words.
“Spread out, spread out, spread out!”
Gao Yang held the radio, shouting, both to those near him and all those under his command, but it was futile—no one could hear.
Looking back, the explosive fire seed endless, illuminating half the night sky, though fortunately, the explosions were occurring behind.
