Gao Yang was even more curious than Murphy, because Phoenix was now under his command.
So, Gao Yang couldn’t resist taking out his phone and actually dialed Phoenix.
Phoenix quickly answered the call and whispered, "Boss."
Talking to Phoenix was a painful task, because she would never voluntarily say a word. Though she would answer every question, if an answer could be made with one word, she wouldn’t use two. Communicating with soone like this wasn’t impossible, but it certainly wasn’t comfortable.
Thus, Gao Yang didn’t quite know what to say, and when he remained silent, Phoenix did too. Both held the phone without making a sound.
Finally, Gao Yang organized his thoughts.
"Phoenix, who you were before doesn’t matter. What matters is who you are going forward. So, I need to ask you so questions. If you feel you can answer them, then do so. If not, that’s fine, okay?"
"Okay."
Gao Yang rubbed his head hard and then sat on the bed. After reorganizing for a long ti, he lightly coughed twice and said, "You have two Remington M700s at ho, one that you use regularly and the other with camouflage paint—well, you used that gun to kill nine people, right?"
This ti, it was Phoenix’s turn to be silent. After at least a minute of silence, she finally murmured, "Yes."
A sound of agreent could count as an answer, but it drove Gao Yang crazy because he needed Phoenix to give an accurate response, not just a vague sound.
"What does ’yes’ an? If it is, then say ’it is’! If it’s not, say ’it’s not’!"
"It is."
Phoenix responded crisply this ti. Gao Yang breathed a sigh of relief and gave Murphy a thumbs-up.
Murphy displayed a look of inevitability and shrugged.
Gao Yang cleared his throat again and softly asked, "Aren’t you curious how I found out?"
"No."
Gao Yang urgently pulled at his hair and shouted, "How could you not be curious? How could you not be interested in why I know?"
"You’ll say."
Gao Yang took the phone away from his ear, clenched his fist, and swung it in the air twice before putting the phone back to his ear. He whispered, "Alright, alright, I got myself into this, didn’t I? Let tell you, a friend of mine works for the FBI and he’s tracking a serial murder case. Then he found you and even went to your house to investigate your guns and confird that you were the killer. Wouldn’t you want to know how he found out?"
Gao Yang couldn’t help but ask Phoenix again, and Phoenix finally showed so curiosity.
"I want to know."
Gao Yang mumbled a few tis and finally sighed, "Forget it, it’s a bit complicated to explain now, let’s talk about it later."
"Okay."
The biggest feeling when talking to Phoenix was that even the most laconic person would feel like a chatterbox.
Gao Yang found himself at a loss for how to continue the conversation. After thinking for a mont, he had to rearrange his questioning approach. He spoke again helplessly, "Then let’s continue talking about your ti in the military. The person investigating you found that you were possibly involved in the deaths of four people while you were in the military, um, uh, this is sowhat..."
"I did it."
Gao Yang abruptly shut his mouth and looked at Murphy. Murphy eagerly asked, "Was it? Was it?"
Gao Yang nodded slightly and said, "It was."
Murphy swung his fist sharply, and then pointed both thumbs at himself, saying, "Call Mr. Sherlock Hols Murphy, no, Sherlock Hols is fictional, but I’m real!"
Gao Yang exhaled and gestured for Murphy to turn on the speaker mode on the phone, then continued speaking into the phone, "So, how did you do it?"
"Shot three dead, stabbed one."
Gao Yang’s face imdiately fell, and Murphy whispered helplessly, "What kind of answer is that? I want details, details!"
Gao Yang weakly said, "Speak more fully, tell it from the beginning. I need to know the details, as detailed as possible, that’s an order!"
"Yes, one day my captain got drunk and he and three others ca to my dormitory. Two suddenly grabbed my arms. I resisted violently, but was held down by three. Then my captain took off his pants..."
"Stop! Stop! Hold it there, skip that part, just tell how you got revenge."
Gao Yang felt very helpless, but Murphy had a peculiar expression and whispered, "No, no, ask her if she was actually... you know."
Gao Yang’s face turned somber, and he whispered, "Get lost, you pervert!"
Murphy got anxious and whispered, "What do you know? I need to know the extent of her ordeal to understand why she chose such a decisive thod of vengeance. How does that make a pervert?"
At this mont, Phoenix continued to speak unemotionally, "I reported to the officer, told him the captain intended to assault , but my officer only questioned the captain and nothing more was done, so I decided to handle it myself."
Gao Yang paused, "Intended? So he didn’t succeed?"
"Depends on how you interpret it. They hit , but when they took off my clothes, I bit one of their hands. Then as they kept beating , I reached for a knife on one of them and stabbed him. When soone heard noise and rushed in, they fled."
Gao Yang let out a breath and said, "Alright, let’s skip that part. Just tell how you ambushed and killed them."
"Then it won’t be detailed; that order contradicts your previous one, Boss."
Gao Yang rubbed his forehead, "Alright, go at your pace, detailed as you can."
"While on a mission, I found a sniper, learned his hiding place, understood his pattern of actions. I observed him at least four tis but never fired. Then one day, after obtaining the patrol route of the captain and others, I reached my surveillance position early, changed into pre-prepared clothes, and left the position for the spot the sniper frequently went."
Gao Yang urgently asked, "Wait, you monitored alone? No spotter?"
"No spotter, no one could stand operating with , I did so deliberately, so I acted alone during that period."
Murphy whispered, "See that? She planned carefully from the start, she didn’t just wait, but created opportunities for herself."
Gao Yang nodded and then told Phoenix, "Alright, continue."
