They are the most common 'Titan-class' creatures of the Tyranids.

Broodlords are primarily responsible for reproduction within the swarm, and along with the Malefactor and Norn-Queen, they are one of the few identifiable 'female' types within the Tyranid.
Under normal circumstances, the Norn-Queen would parasitize a Broodlord, but Yang Tao had killed waves of various Tyranids without seeing the Norn-Queen.
"Damn it, this isn't the Hive Ship where the Norn-Queen is!"
Upon realizing this, Yang Tao imdiately flew out of the Hive.
