Now reading: Chapter 12 12: Familiar Spaces from Modern Family: More than Family, a Mature novel by disarmednose.

By the ti Gael and Haley arrived at the Dunphy house, the sun had already started dipping lower across the neighborhood.

Phil opened the door before they even knocked.

"Thank God," he said imdiately. "The television is teaching Luke about sharks."

"That sounds educational," Gael replied while stepping inside.

"It's educational because the printer is sohow connected to the Discovery Channel," Claire called from the living room.

Gael followed the sound of her voice while Haley disappeared toward the kitchen.

The house looked the sa as always:

controlled chaos,

half-finished projects,

family photos everywhere,

and enough background noise to make silence feel unnatural.

Claire sat cross-legged on the floor near the entertainnt cabinet with several papers spread around her.

She looked up as Gael entered.

"You're my favorite person right now."

"That's a dangerous amount of pressure."

"It's temporary," she assured him.

Gael crouched beside the television setup while Phil hovered nearby, offering entirely unhelpful explanations.

"In my defense," Phil said, "the cable situation beca emotional."

"That sentence ans nothing."

"It ans I tried sothing innovative."

Claire folded her arms.

"You connected our printer to Animal Planet."

"That sounds innovative to ," Luke added from the couch.

Alex looked up from her book.

"I still don't understand how that's physically possible."

"Neither do I," Claire admitted.

Gael glanced behind the television cabinet.

Then paused.

"…Phil."

Phil straightened proudly.

"Yes?"

"Why are there six HDMI cables plugged into one printer?"

Silence.

Luke slowly lowered a bag of chips.

Alex removed her glasses dramatically.

Claire closed her eyes.

"I married this man."

"In fairness," Phil said carefully, "technology should explain itself better."

Gael laughed quietly while unplugging cables.

This—

all of this—

still felt surreal sotis.

Not in a dramatic way anymore.

In small monts.

Like sitting on the Dunphy living room floor, fixing electronics while Haley argued with Luke in the kitchen about stolen snacks.

A month ago, these people were fictional.

Now Phil was handing him screwdrivers.

Life was strange.

"Okay," Gael said after another minute. "Try printing now."

Claire stood and walked toward the nearby laptop.

A second later, the printer finally whirred to life normally.

Phil gasped.

"He's a wizard."

"It was literally just cables."

"You say that like magic isn't mostly wires."

Claire laughed softly despite herself.

"There." She picked up the printed pages triumphantly. "Finally."

Gael stood, brushing dust from his jeans.

"Your husband is a threat to modern infrastructure."

"That's been clear for years."

Phil looked offended.

"I bring creativity into this household."

"You brought sharks into the office equipnt," Alex corrected.

"Exactly."

Gael shook his head, smiling.

God.

He really liked this family.

The realization ca easier now.

Less resistance.

Less distance.

Which probably ant he was getting too attached.

Haley wandered back into the living room carrying a soda.

"You fixed it?"

"He prevented your father from accidentally summoning Skynet," Alex answered.

"Nice."

Haley naturally moved beside Gael, bumping lightly into his side while handing him the drink she'd grabbed for him without asking.

Small habit.

Automatic now.

Claire noticed it from across the room.

Not suspiciously.

More with the quiet awareness of a parent watching a relationship beco serious in real ti.

That was the thing slowly changing lately.

At first, Gael had been:

Haley's rich new guy.

Now he was becoming:

soone who fits into the rhythm of the house.

Soone people expected to see around.

The shift was subtle but noticeable.

"Since you saved us," Phil announced, "you're staying for dinner."

Haley grinned.

"You're trapped now."

Gael pretended to sigh dramatically.

"A terrible fate."

An hour later, dinner had dissolved into overlapping conversations again.

Luke was explaining why skateboards should legally count as transportation.

Phil was trying to convince Alex that cryptocurrency would replace banks.

Alex looked ready to commit violence.

"It's decentralized currency," Phil argued.

"You learned that phrase yesterday."

"I'm evolving."

Claire turned toward Gael.

"This is your fault, by the way."

"I refuse responsibility."

"You introduced him to bitcoin."

"I answered one question."

Phil pointed triumphantly.

"Exactly how revolutions begin."

Gael laughed into his glass while Haley leaned against his shoulder beside him.

Comfortable.

Easy.

Claire watched the interaction quietly for a second before returning to her food.

There was sothing oddly reassuring about seeing Haley like this.

Settled.

Genuinely happy.

Most of Haley's past relationships burned hot and disappeared fast.

This felt steadier.

Which, honestly, surprised Claire more than anyone.

"You know what's weird?" Luke said suddenly.

Everyone looked at him cautiously.

"You're here so much now that it'd be weird if you disappeared."

The table went briefly quiet.

Then Haley smirked.

"Wow. Luke accidentally said sothing intelligent."

"It'll never happen again," Alex said.

Gael smiled faintly, but the comnt stayed with him.

Because Luke was right.

He was becoming part of their routine.

And maybe that should have scared him more than it did.

After dinner, Haley disappeared upstairs with Alex after so argunt about clothes, leaving Gael helping Claire clear plates while Phil searched the garage for sothing he claid was "probably important."

"You don't have to help," Claire said while rinsing dishes.

"You cooked."

"Barely. Most of this ca from containers."

"Still counts."

Claire glanced sideways at him briefly.

"You fit in here strangely fast."

The comnt caught him off guard.

Gael dried one of the plates slowly before answering.

"I'm still deciding if that's good."

"It is," Claire said simply.

The answer ca naturally enough that she seed surprised by her own certainty afterward.

A brief silence followed.

Not awkward.

Just thoughtful.

The kitchen felt calr now without everyone talking over each other.

Only running water.

Soft light.

The occasional muffled yelling from upstairs.

Claire handed him another plate.

"You know," she said casually, "Haley hasn't looked this comfortable with soone before."

Gael looked at her carefully.

"That sounds like pressure again."

Claire smiled slightly.

"No. Just observation."

And there it was again:

that steady attentiveness she carried into conversations.

Not intense.

Just focused.

Like she genuinely listened when people spoke.

Gael understood why people opened up to her more than they realized.

"She talks about you constantly, by the way," Claire added.

"That's mildly terrifying."

"It should be."

He laughed softly.

Claire did too.

For a second, the mont lingered a little longer than expected before footsteps thundered downstairs again, breaking the quiet.

Haley reappeared dramatically.

"Alex stole my sweater."

"I borrowed it," Alex corrected behind her.

"You've had it for six months!"

Gael watched the sisters argue while Claire sighed toward the ceiling, as this happened daily.

Which it probably did.

And standing there in the middle of the noise and laughter and familiar chaos—

Gael had the strange realization that he was already starting to think of this place as ho.
