Alex studied wherever; Gael's kitchen happened to be quietest.
Claire stopped knocking entirely.
Even Luke wandered through the gate like crossing property lines was a constitutional right.
And sowhere along the way, everyone stopped thinking of him as temporary.
That should have felt good.
Instead it increasingly felt fragile.
The penthouse offered relief from that feeling.
Or at least distance from it.
That night Gael stayed downtown after etings, answering emails from the balcony while the city glowed beneath him in layers of light and movent.
No family noise.
No emotional complexity.
No backyard gates creaking open unexpectedly.
Just silence.
Then his phone buzzed.
Gloria.
For a second he considered ignoring it.
Instead he answered.
"Hello?"
A pause.
Then her voice entered softly through the speaker.
"Are you busy?"
Not flirtatious.
Not casual.
Careful.
Gael stepped farther onto the balcony overlooking the skyline.
"No."
Another brief silence followed.
They'd crossed into phone calls now without discussing it.
Without deciding it.
"I almost called twice before this," Gloria admitted quietly.
"Why?"
A faint exhale sounded through the line.
"Because I knew exactly who I wanted to talk to tonight."
The city wind moved softly around the balcony while Gael leaned one arm against the railing.
"What happened?"
"Nothing happened." Her voice carried frustration now. "That's the problem."
He stayed quiet.
Gloria laughed softly once under her breath.
"Jay and I had dinner with friends. We ca ho. We watched television." A pause. "It was a completely normal evening."
But emotionally she sounded restless.
Unsettled.
Then:
"And all night I kept thinking about calling you."
There it was again.
Choice.
Not accidental attraction anymore.
Deliberate emotional turning.
Gael looked out across the city lights for a few seconds before answering carefully.
"You know where this goes if we keep doing this."
Silence.
Longer this ti.
Then Gloria answered honestly.
"Yes."
No denial.
No pretending.
The directness tightened the atmosphere imdiately.
"You should hang up," he said quietly.
Another pause.
And for one suspended mont, it genuinely sounded like she might.
Instead Gloria spoke softer than before.
"I don't want to."
That simple sentence carried more intimacy than flirting ever had.
Because now she wasn't chasing excitent anymore.
She was seeking him specifically.
Then her voice lowered slightly through the phone.
"Where are you?"
"The penthouse."
Sothing changed in the silence after that.
He could feel it.
Gloria imagined it imdiately:
the city,
the privacy,
him alone there.
Dangerous.
When she finally spoke again, her voice sounded different.
Warr.
More intimate.
"I keep picturing you there."
And suddenly the distance between suburbia and the penthouse stopped feeling physical.
