Friday night movie selection at the Dunphy house had sohow escalated into a near-constitutional crisis.
"We are not watching another docuntary about prison," Claire Dunphy said firmly from the couch.
"It was about corruption," Alex Dunphy corrected.
"That sohow made it less fun."
Phil Dunphy pointed dramatically toward the television remote.
"Family movie night requires action."
"It requires quality," Alex argued.
"It requires Ryan Gosling," Haley added while walking into the living room carrying snacks.
"That's not a genre," Claire replied.
"It should be."
Gael sat near the corner of the couch watching the entire argunt unfold with growing amusent.
At so point over the past few months, he had stopped feeling awkward showing up here uninvited.
Now he just walked in, got dragged into chaos automatically, and sohow ended up staying for dinner half the ti.
"You know what's disturbing?" Luke said while flopping into a chair nearby. "I barely notice you here anymore."
"That feels insulting."
"It ans you're furniture now," Alex explained.
"Emotionally decorative," Haley added.
Gael snorted quietly while Haley dropped onto the couch beside him, imdiately stealing half the blanket from his lap.
Again.
Every object he owned seed to beco partially Haley's eventually.
The movie debate continued another ten minutes before Phil sohow won through sheer persistence.
Which ant they were now watching an aggressively loud action movie while Luke attempted to predict explosions before they happened.
"Truck explodes in five seconds," Luke announced.
Three seconds later, the truck exploded.
Luke raised both hands triumphantly.
"I understand cinema!"
Gael laughed quietly while Haley curled closer against his side beneath the blanket.
Warm.
Comfortable.
Familiar now.
Halfway through the movie, Claire eventually disappeared into the kitchen for more wine.
A few minutes later, Gael got up to help carry drinks back before anyone asked.
The kitchen lights were softer than the living room, the noise from the movie muffled slightly by distance.
Claire looked up from opening another bottle.
"You know," she said while reaching for wine glasses, "you don't actually have to help every ti."
"You say that like your family wouldn't start a small riot if left unsupervised."
"That's fair."
Gael smiled faintly while taking the glasses from her.
The kitchen settled into comfortable quiet for a mont.
Not awkward.
Just calr than the rest of the house.
Claire leaned lightly against the counter while watching him.
"You've beco suspiciously dostic."
"That sounds threatening."
"It's observational."
Gael glanced toward her briefly.
"You and Alex say that whenever you're judging people."
Claire laughed softly.
"Oh no. You've learned our patterns."
"Survival instinct."
Sothing about the conversation felt easy tonight.
Maybe because the rest of the house was so loud in the background.
Maybe because Claire looked more relaxed than usual with her hair loosely tied back and a glass of wine already in hand.
Or maybe because over the past months, talking to her had simply stopped feeling formal.
"You know what Phil said earlier?" Claire asked suddenly.
"That's already concerning."
"He said if you and Haley ever break up, the family gets partial custody of you."
Gael nearly laughed into the wine glasses.
"That's horrifying."
"I told him that's not how people work."
"And?"
Claire smiled slightly.
"He said emotionally it is."
Honestly?
That sounded exactly like Phil.
Gael shook his head quietly while Claire watched him for a second longer than expected.
Not intense.
Not loaded.
Just thoughtful.
"You really care about her," Claire said eventually.
Not a question.
A realization.
Gael looked toward the living room where Haley's laughter echoed faintly through the hallway.
"Yeah," he admitted softly.
Claire's expression ward slightly at the answer.
And for a brief mont, sothing shifted quietly between them.
A deeper kind of trust settling into place.
Claire handed him another glass carefully.
"She deserves that," she said.
The sincerity in her voice caught him slightly off guard.
Because beneath all the sarcasm and control and constant managent of chaos—
Claire loved her children fiercely.
Gael understood that more every week.
"She talks about you constantly, by the way," Claire added.
"That feels mildly threatening."
"It should."
Gael laughed softly.
Then the living room erupted into yelling again.
"THE HELICOPTER'S ON FIRE!" Luke scread excitedly.
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
"…And that's my cue to return before your girlfriend encourages arson."
As they walked back into the living room together, Haley imdiately looked up from the couch.
"There you are."
Simple sentence.
But the way she smiled at seeing him again—
like she'd been waiting for him to co back even after only a few minutes—
did sothing warm and dangerous to his chest all over again.
Unfortunately, Luke ruined the emotional mont instantly.
"You guys took forever."
