Now reading: Chapter 28 28: Sunday Morning from Modern Family: More than Family, a Mature novel by disarmednose.

Gael woke up to sunlight, tangled blankets, and Haley Dunphy stealing his pillow again.

"That's mine," he mumbled without opening his eyes.

"You have two."

"That's not the point."

Haley only made a soft, unimpressed sound before pulling the pillow closer anyway.

The apartnt stayed quiet around them while late morning light spilled through the massive bedroom windows overlooking Los Angeles.

No alarms.

No school.

No family chaos yet.

Just warmth and the faint sound of the city far below.

Honestly, mornings with Haley had beco one of Gael's favorite parts of the week.

Not because of sex.

Because of this:

half-asleep conversations,

lazy touching,

existing quietly beside soone without pressure to perform constantly.

Haley shifted closer beneath the blankets until one leg tangled loosely with his.

"You know what's weird?" she murmured sleepily.

"That phrase has damaged my life repeatedly."

"You always wake up before now."

Gael opened one eye slightly.

"You sleep like the dead."

"That's because I'm beautiful."

"That's unrelated."

Haley laughed softly into his shoulder.

The sound settled warmly sowhere in his chest.

God.

This had beco dangerously dostic.

Not in so dramatic life-changing way.

Just small routines forming piece by piece:

her hoodie hanging in his closet,

her favorite coffee already stocked in his kitchen,

both of them automatically making space for the other without thinking anymore.

Haley eventually reached blindly for her phone near the nightstand.

Then groaned.

"Oh no. My mom texted ."

Gael blinked once.

"At eleven in the morning?"

"She's asking if we're alive."

"That's fair."

Haley opened the ssage while still half-curled against him.

A second later she snorted laughing.

"What?"

"She says Dad tried making waffles and the kitchen 'looks like damaged by a natural disaster.'"

"That's actually impressive."

Haley rolled onto her back beside him while typing one-handed.

Then paused suddenly.

"Oh my God."

"What now?"

"She invited us to brunch."

Interesting.

Not Haley.

Us.

Gael noticed that imdiately now whenever Claire phrased things that way.

Not because it ant sothing deeper.

Just because it showed how naturally his presence had started getting included in family plans.

Haley tossed her phone onto the blankets before turning toward him again.

"You know what my mom told yesterday?"

"That she regrets raising Luke?"

"She said it's nice having soone around who actually listens when people talk."

That caught him slightly off guard.

Gael looked toward the ceiling for a second before answering.

"That feels suspiciously mature for your family."

"I know. It scared too."

He laughed quietly while Haley watched him carefully.

"What?"

"You get weird whenever people complint you seriously."

Interesting observation.

But annoyingly accurate.

Gael had spent most of both lives learning how to handle:

attention,

expectations,

competition,

people wanting things from him.

Simple affection still hit differently sohow.

Before he could answer, Haley leaned closer and kissed him softly.

Slow.

Sleepy.

Warm.

The kind of kiss that belonged to mornings instead of tension.

Gael's hand slid naturally along her waist beneath the blankets while she smiled faintly against his mouth.

"You know," Haley murmured, "if we stay in bed all day, technically nobody can stop us."

"Your mother absolutely can."

"She's like fifty percent organization and forty percent judgnt."

"What's the remaining ten percent?"

Haley thought seriously for a second.

"Wine."

"That feels statistically accurate."

She laughed again before kissing him once more.

Longer this ti.

Not rushed.

The apartnt stayed quiet around them while sunlight spread slowly across tangled sheets and half-finished conversations.

And sowhere between Haley stealing pillows and Claire inviting him to brunch automatically—

Gael realized this life had stopped feeling temporary a long ti ago.
