Modern Family: More than Family Chapter 45 45: Backyard Lights

A week later, Jay decided the family needed a barbecue.

By six in the evening, the backyard was full of voices, music, and the sll of grilled food while Phil aggressively overcomplicated basic cooking techniques beside the patio.

"You're flipping the burgers too late," Jay inford him.

Phil looked offended.

"I'm creating texture."

"You're creating charcoal."

Nearby, Gloria sat beneath the string lights with wine in hand while Cam tried explaining thed wedding centerpieces to a deeply exhausted Mitchell.

Luke chased Lily through the yard with a water gun despite multiple threats from Claire.

Alex argued politics with Manny near the pool.

And Haley had stolen Gael's sunglasses again even though the sun was already setting.

"I look better in them," she declared.

"That's because you steal confidence professionally."

"That's because I'm talented."

Honestly, the atmosphere felt good tonight.

Loud.

Warm.

Slightly chaotic.

The kind of evening where conversations drifted naturally between groups without anyone noticing.

At one point Haley disappeared inside with Claire to help bring food out, leaving Gael near the grill with Jay and Phil.

Jay glanced sideways at him while turning skewers carefully.

"You investing in anything interesting lately?"

There it was.

Gael had noticed by now that Jay respected people through practical conversations.

Business.

Money.

Competence.

Not emotional speeches.

"A few tech companies," Gael answered. "Mostly long-term holds."

Jay nodded once.

"Smart."

Phil pointed with barbecue tongs imdiately.

"I invested in a drone startup once."

Jay took a slow sip of beer.

"And where is that company now?"

Phil looked thoughtful.

"…Legally unavailable."

Gael laughed quietly while Jay shook his head like this outco had been inevitable.

Then Jay glanced toward the house briefly.

"You've been around a lot lately."

Simple statent.

Still direct enough that Gael understood imdiately:

"Yeah," Gael answered calmly.

Jay humd once before checking the grill again.

The silence stretched long enough that Phil started visibly panicking beside them.

"Kids like you."

Short sentence.

"Haley especially," Phil added proudly.

"Phil," Jay muttered.

"What? I'm supportive."

Gael smirked faintly while Phil continued aggressively rearranging burgers.

"You know what I think?" Phil said.

"That this burger needs saving?" Jay replied.

"I think Haley acts calr around him."

That caught Gael slightly off guard.

Because Phil sounded completely sincere.

Jay looked toward him again after that.

Before it could settle further, Haley reappeared carrying bowls with Claire walking behind her.

Then, without thinking about it, she handed Gael a bottle opener while continuing her conversation with Gloria.

Small thing.

Still enough to make Haley notice imdiately.

Her eyes flicked briefly between both of them.

"You okay?" Gael asked quietly once Claire moved away again.

Haley looked up at him for a second before smiling faintly.

"Yeah."

But she stayed slightly closer to him afterward.

Close enough that her fingers kept brushing against his arm whenever either of them moved.
