The movie turned into a complete disaster within twenty minutes.

Luke kept talking through every scene.

Phil sohow fell asleep despite insisting he was "totally invested emotionally."

Alex continuously criticized plot holes.

And Haley spent most of the ti half-curled against Gael's side on the couch like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Which, unfortunately, felt very natural to him too.

Gael rested an arm along the back of the couch while Haley absentmindedly played with the sleeve of his dark sweater during the movie.

Small contact.

Casual.

But intimate enough that Claire noticed imdiately from the armchair across the room.

Of course she did.

Claire noticed everything.

"You're doing the face again," Haley whispered.

Gael glanced down at her.

"What face?"

"The one where you look like you're solving tax fraud in your head."

"That's just my personality."

"That's concerning."

He smiled slightly.

God, she was easy to be around.

The dangerous part was that it didn't feel forced.

Haley wasn't trying to impress him anymore tonight. The party-girl performance faded more every hour they spent together, replaced by soone warr and more emotionally aware than most people gave her credit for.

Which made Gael understand why future relationships hurt her so badly.

Because underneath the jokes and confidence, Haley attached deeply.

He already knew that.

But seeing it firsthand made it real in a completely different way.

"You're staring again," Haley murmured.

"Maybe you're distracting."

"That sounded smooth."

"It sounded honest."

For once, Haley didn't imdiately joke back.

She just looked at him quietly for a second before smiling faintly and leaning her head against his shoulder.

Across the room, Claire's wine glass paused halfway to her lips.

Claire looked away before anyone could notice.

Unfortunately for her, Gael noticed anyway.

And imdiately wished he hadn't.

Because now his brain was paying attention to entirely inappropriate things.

Like how Claire's legs crossed slowly beneath the soft living room light.

Or the way her eyes lingered just a little too long whenever he touched Haley casually.

"You know what?" Alex said suddenly from the floor. "This movie is scientifically terrible."

Luke pointed accusingly.

"You hate joy."

"I hate bad writing."

Phil lifted a finger without opening his eyes.

"Those are not mutually exclusive."

Everyone stared at him.

"Were you asleep?" Claire asked.

Phil opened one eye.

"Emotionally resting."

Haley burst out laughing.

Gael laughed too before catching Claire watching him again.

Noticing him.

asuring reactions.

Trying to understand why soone who looked polished and successful still carried this strange underlying sadness in his expressions sotis.

The problem was that Claire Dunphy was observant enough to eventually figure out pieces of him that he didn't want anyone seeing.

And so reckless part of him found that exciting.

Which was deeply unhealthy.

Around midnight, the movie finally ended.

Luke disappeared upstairs after losing an argunt with Alex about cinematic standards, while Phil wandered off muttering sothing about checking the thermostat.

Haley stretched lazily beside Gael on the couch.

"You should stay over."

Claire nearly choked on her wine.

Gael blinked.

Haley looked around innocently.

"What?"

Claire recovered imdiately.

"What happened to easing your mother into things slowly?"

"We have been making out every day since the party, Mom. I think we passed 'slow.'"

Phil re-entered the room at exactly the wrong mont.

"You kissed him at a party?"

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

"You knew that already," she reminded him.

"Oh, right." Phil pointed proudly. "I still support this relationship."

"It's not officially a relationship," Haley said.

Phil frowned dramatically at Gael.

"You planning to fix that?"

"Dad!"

"What? I'm asking respectfully."

Gael laughed softly.

"I'll keep that in mind."

Haley tried to hide a smile.

Claire noticed that too.

Unfortunately, Claire was beginning to notice everything about the way her daughter looked at him.

And that honestly should have reassured her.

Instead, it made her nervous.

Because Gael Ronin didn't feel temporary.

That was the issue.

Boys Haley usually dated felt loud and impulsive and easy to predict.

Gael felt controlled.

The kind of person who could quietly beco important before anyone realized it was happening.

Dangerous.

Claire hated how accurate that instinct felt already.

"Well," Claire said while standing, "Haley, maybe don't invite boys to sleep over after one date."

"Technically, this is our second date."

"That sohow made it worse."

Haley grinned shalessly.

Gael stood as well, slipping his jacket back on.

"I should probably go anyway."

Haley made a disappointed face imdiately.

And there it was again.

That strange warmth in his chest.

Nobody had ever looked genuinely disappointed to see him leave in either life.

Claire noticed the way his expression softened at Haley's reaction.

Again.

Always observing.

"I'll walk you out," Haley said.

"Don't make out in the driveway," Claire warned instantly.

"Mom!"

"Claire," Phil interrupted gently, trying not to laugh.

Haley grabbed Gael's hand dramatically and pulled him toward the front door.

"This family is emotionally exhausting."

"You seem immune."

"I've adapted."

Outside, cool night air wrapped around them as the door shut behind them.

For a second, neither spoke.

The suburban street was quiet now.

Peaceful.

Completely different from the chaotic warmth inside the house.

Haley stepped closer slowly.

"You survived," she said softly.

"Barely."

"My mom likes you."

Gael raised an eyebrow.

"I beg to differ."

"She's suspicious of everyone I date."

"Comforting."

Haley smiled before looking down briefly.

Then back at him.

More serious now.

"You're different from them."

Gael stayed quiet.

"You looked…" She searched for the word. "Happy."

That caught him off guard more than it should have.

Because she was right.

And he hadn't even realized it himself.

Haley studied him carefully beneath the porch light.

"You know," she said quietly, "sotis it feels like you already miss things before they're gone."

Gael's breath caught slightly.

For a mont, neither moved.

Then Haley stepped forward and kissed him first this ti.

Softer than at the party.

Slower.

More deliberate.

Gael's hand settled lightly at her waist while she leaned against him beneath the warm glow of the porch light.

Inside the house, unseen behind partially closed blinds—

Claire noticed.

And for reasons she absolutely did not want to examine too closely, the sight made her chest tighten unexpectedly.
