Modern Family: More than Family Chapter 51 51: Cleanup

Dinner sohow beca even louder after the grocery-store story surfaced.

Phil kept trying to recreate the exact conversation.

Luke asked if Gael and Claire had "grocery chemistry."

And Gloria looked one comnt away from openly encouraging violence.

"It was one woman," Claire repeated for what felt like the tenth ti while stacking plates aggressively near the sink.

"One very confident woman," Phil corrected proudly.

"That sohow makes it worse."

Haley sat at the counter beside Gael watching her mother with obvious amusent.

"You have to admit it's kind of funny."

Claire pointed a dish towel directly at her daughter.

"You are enjoying this entirely too much."

"Correct."

Jay looked entertained enough to stay quiet for once, which honestly said more than actual comntary would have.

Eventually dinner dissolved into cleanup:

Luke disappeared imdiately to avoid responsibility,

Phil got distracted reorganizing leftovers incorrectly,

and Gloria sohow convinced Jay to help her outside with patio lights.

Leaving the kitchen calr at last.

Mostly.

Gael stood beside the sink drying dishes while Claire rinsed them beside him with the focused determination of soone trying to survive embarrassnt through productivity.

"You know," he said carefully, "Luke figuring it out that fast was impressive."

Claire looked horrified again instantly.

"Please don't remind ."

From the counter, Haley watched both of them quietly while spinning a spoon between her fingers.

Then:

"You're still flustered."

Claire nearly dropped a plate into the sink.

"I am not flustered."

"That sounded flustered," Gael replied before thinking.

Both won looked at him imdiately.

"…Traitor," Claire muttered.

Haley burst out laughing.

Honestly, seeing Claire embarrassed felt strangely rare.

Normally she controlled rooms effortlessly:

organized,

quick responses,

always one step ahead of conversations.

Tonight she kept getting caught off guard instead.

Interesting shift.

Phil wandered back into the kitchen right on cue.

"Oh! Did I miss more tension?"

"There is no tension," Claire answered imdiately.

Phil looked between her and Gael.

Then toward Haley.

Then grinned slowly.

"Wow."

"Dad," Haley warned.

"I'm just observing."

"That word has beco a disease in this family."

Gael laughed quietly while Claire pointed toward the fridge.

"Can you please distract your father?"

"Impossible," Haley replied proudly. "He's free-range."

Phil looked deeply pleased by that description.

Eventually, Haley hopped off the counter and walked over beside Gael while he dried another plate.

Without really thinking about it, she slid one arm around his waist and rested against him.

Then Haley looked up at Gael.

"You know what's funny?"

Claire physically sighed already.

"If so random woman thought you and Mom looked good together, imagine how bad it's gonna get when you're older."

Silence.

Then Phil started choking on water.

"HALEY."

"What?!" she defended imdiately. "I an aesthetically."

"That did not sound aesthetic," Claire replied.

Gael covered part of his face briefly with one hand while Gloria's laughter echoed from outside through the open patio door.

Apparently she'd heard everything.

Of course she had.

Haley looked entirely unapologetic.

"I'm just saying Mom has taste."

Claire stared at her daughter in complete betrayal.

"You are literally impossible."

"Genetics," Haley answered proudly.

Then she kissed Gael's cheek quickly and walked out of the kitchen before anybody could retaliate.

Leaving behind:

Phil trying not to laugh,

Claire questioning every life decision she'd ever made,

and Gael suddenly very aware of how quiet the kitchen had beco afterward.
