Around midnight, the movie finally ended in complete exhaustion.
Luke had fallen asleep inside the collapsed blanket fort.
Phil was snoring loudly enough that nobody bothered lowering the television volu anymore. Jay and Gloria went back ho.
And Alex disappeared upstairs after declaring the movie "an insult to narrative structure."
Normal ending to a Dunphy movie night.
Haley stretched lazily beside Gael on the couch before glancing toward the kitchen.
"I want ice cream."
"That sounds less like a suggestion and more like destiny."
"Correct."
She stood, grabbed his wrist, and pulled him toward the kitchen while Claire stayed behind trying unsuccessfully to wake Phil up.
"Phil."
Nothing.
"Phil."
Still nothing.
Then:
"PHIL YOUR HAIR LOOKS GREAT."
Phil bolted upright imdiately.
"Where?!"
Gael laughed under his breath while Haley nearly collapsed against the counter wheezing.
The kitchen lights felt softer this late at night.
Quiet house.
Open fridge.
Haley stealing cookie dough ice cream directly from the container while standing barefoot in one of his hoodies.
Comfortable scene.
"You know," she murmured between bites, "Mom's absolutely thinking about the grocery thing too much."
Gael looked over while grabbing spoons.
"That sounds right."
"She gets weirdly stuck on embarrassing monts."
"She seed mostly annoyed."
Haley smirked slightly into the ice cream container.
"That's how Mom hides embarrassnt."
Before he could answer, footsteps approached from the hallway.
Claire entered the kitchen still holding the blanket she'd apparently used to cover Phil on the couch.
"There's no saving your father," she announced tiredly.
"That feels harsh."
"It's accurate."
Then she noticed Haley eating straight from the container.
"Oh, co on."
"It tastes better this way."
"That's scientifically supported."
Haley pointed her spoon toward Gael imdiately.
"See? This is why we work together."
Claire rolled her eyes and moved toward the fridge for water.
For a few minutes the conversation stayed easy:
Luke nearly breaking the lamp earlier,
Phil sleep-talking during movies,
Alex apparently threatening violence if another action film got chosen next week.
Then Haley wandered out of the kitchen to check whether Luke was still alive inside the blanket pile.
Leaving Claire and Gael alone for the first ti since dinner.
Not awkward.
Just quieter again.
Claire leaned against the counter after taking a sip of water.
"I bla Phil for tonight."
"That feels broad."
"He encouraged Luke."
"Phil encourages everybody."
"Exactly the problem."
Gael smiled faintly while rinsing spoons in the sink.
Then Claire glanced toward him briefly.
"For the record…"
He looked over.
"I'm still annoyed that everybody found the grocery thing so funny."
"That sounds personal."
"It is personal."
But she was smiling slightly when she said it.
Small thing.
Still noticeable.
Gael dried his hands slowly with the kitchen towel.
"You handled it pretty well."
Claire laughed softly once.
"No, I absolutely didn't."
"You threw a dish towel at multiple people."
"They deserved it."
Another quiet pause settled naturally after that.
The refrigerator humd softly in the background while distant television noise drifted faintly from the living room.
Then Claire looked toward him again, more thoughtful this ti.
"You fit into this house strangely fast."
Gael leaned lightly back against the counter.
"Your family doesn't exactly make distance easy."
Claire smiled faintly at that.
"No. We really don't."
For a second her eyes stayed on him slightly longer than usual.
Then Haley's voice echoed from the living room imdiately afterward.
"Luke's alive but legally unconscious!"
The mont broke naturally.
Claire shook her head to herself before pushing away from the counter.
"Good. One less ergency tonight."
She started walking back toward the living room before pausing once near the doorway.
"Oh—and next ti sobody mistakes us for a couple, I'm leaving you there alone."
Gael laughed quietly.
"That sounds cowardly."
"That sounds like survival."
