Modern Family: More than Family Chapter 75 75: First Night

By Sunday evening, the house finally looked ready to be lived in.

Not fully finished.

There were still unopened boxes upstairs and Phil had sohow assembled one bookshelf backward before Claire confiscated the instructions from him permanently.

But the rooms no longer echoed.

Furniture filled the spaces.

Lights glowed warm through the windows.

Music drifted softly from the kitchen speaker while people moved naturally between rooms.

It already felt like a ho.

Haley sat cross-legged on the new living room couch surrounded by throw pillows she absolutely forced into existence.

"These are important."

"They're decorative triangles," Alex replied.

"They're architecture."

"That should be illegal."

Gael carried another box into the kitchen while Claire reorganized things Phil had "helped" with earlier.

At this point she'd basically taken over functional unpacking.

"You own too many coffee mugs," she inford him while opening another cabinet.

"That sounds judgntal."

The rest of the family had mostly spread out through the house:

Phil and Luke outside discussing gate dinsions again,

Alex pretending not to help while quietly unpacking books,

Haley building blanket nests on the couch for no practical reason.

Normal chaos.

Then the front door opened again.

Gloria walked inside carrying wine bottles while Jay followed behind her already looking tired.

"Oh good," Gloria announced. "The rich neighbor house finally has alcohol."

"That's a sentence I'm going to regret hearing repeatedly," Claire muttered.

"You will."

Honestly, the weird part wasn't that everyone kept showing up.

It was how natural it already felt.

Nobody knocked carefully.

Nobody acted formal.

The house had beco an extension of the family almost imdiately.

At one point Haley wandered into the kitchen and wrapped both arms loosely around Gael from behind while he unpacked glasses.

"You live here now."

"That's accurate."

"No." She smiled against his shoulder. "I an for real."

The warmth in her voice made him glance back toward her briefly.

Then Claire walked into the kitchen mid-mont carrying plates.

And paused.

Just enough to notice the softness between them before continuing normally.

"Phil's trying to convince Jay the gate should have motion-sensor lighting."

Gael laughed quietly.

"That sounds expensive."

"That sounds Phil."

Haley still hadn't let go of him.

Then Gloria appeared in the doorway with wine.

"There you all are."

Her eyes moved between Haley wrapped around Gael and Claire standing beside the counter.

Then she smiled slightly to herself.

"We're celebrating," she announced while holding up the bottles.

Jay sighed.

"That usually ans I lose peace and quiet."

"That's marriage."

A little later, after food got ordered and everyone settled into different parts of the house—

Gael stepped outside into the backyard for air.

The neighboring Dunphy house glowed warmly beyond the fence under the night lights.

Close.

Very close now.

Then the back door slid open behind him.

Claire stepped outside holding two beers.

She handed him one automatically before leaning beside him against the patio railing.

For a minute neither spoke.

Inside, laughter drifted faintly through the windows behind them.

Then Claire looked toward the fence line.

"You realize Phil's going to build that gate within the week."

"That sounds optimistic."

"That sounds inevitable."

The backyard settled quieter around them.

Then Claire glanced toward him again.

"You really moved next door."

The sentence ca softer than expected.

Gael looked out toward the neighboring yard.

"Looks like it."

Claire smiled faintly into her beer.

Then:

"Well." She bumped lightly against his shoulder before heading back toward the house. "Good luck surviving us permanently."
