The gate changed the Dunphys.

The house changed Gloria.

That beca clear during Gael's housewarming party.

By seven, the new place was full of people, noise, and the kind of food Phil insisted counted as "elevated casual dining" because he'd arranged chips in a spiral.

Haley had already claid the living room couch.

Luke kept trying to convince people the pool needed night lights shaped like sharks.

Claire moved through the kitchen fixing small disasters before they beca bigger ones.

And Gloria walked in like she owned every room she entered.

Red dress.

Gold earrings.

Wine bottle in hand.

Jay followed behind her carrying nothing except his usual expression of reluctant participation.

"Nice place," Jay said after one slow glance around.

From him, that was practically applause.

Gloria smiled toward Gael as she stepped inside.

"Now this looks like a man's house."

Haley imdiately turned from the couch.

"Um, rude. I helped pick pillows."

Gloria glanced at the couch.

"That is why the pillows look expensive and useless."

"They're emotional support pillows."

"They are triangles."

Gael laughed quietly while Haley gasped in betrayal.

Gloria handed him the wine bottle as she passed.

"For your collection."

"I don't have a collection."

"You should. You have the kitchen for it."

She said it casually, but her eyes moved around the space with open appreciation.

Not the quick curiosity everyone else had shown.

Sothing slower.

asuring.

The house looked different at night:

warm lights,

dark windows,

music low beneath conversation,

pool glowing faintly outside through the glass doors.

In the Dunphy house, Gael was always surrounded by soone else's chaos.

Here, even with everyone visiting, he felt more centered.

Host, not guest.

Gloria noticed.

A little later, while Jay settled near the patio with Phil and Mitchell, Gloria found Gael in the kitchen opening the bottle she'd brought.

"You are good at this," she said.

"At opening wine?"

"At making people comfortable."

He glanced toward the living room where Haley was arguing with Alex over whether decorative blankets counted as furniture.

"I mostly provide space and let your family destroy it."

"That is hosting."

"Low standards."

Gloria laughed softly and leaned against the counter.

The kitchen was quieter than the rest of the house, separated just enough from the living room that their conversation didn't have to compete with everyone else.

"You seem different here," she said.

Gael looked over.

"How?"

"In their house, you are Haley's boyfriend." Gloria's smile tilted faintly. "Here, you are the man who owns the house."

The words were playful.

Almost.

Gael set the corkscrew down.

"That sounds like a warning."

"No." Gloria accepted the glass he poured for her, fingers brushing his for barely a second. "A complint."

She didn't rush to move away.

Neither did he.

Then Haley shouted from the living room:

"Gael! Tell Alex she's wrong!"

Alex answered instantly.

"I'm not wrong!"

Gloria smiled into her wine.

"There is your rescue call."

"Usually it's a distress signal."

"For you or for them?"

"Both."

That made her laugh again, warr this ti.

She looked toward the living room, then back at him.

"For tonight, enjoy it. They already act like this house belongs to everyone."

"They're not subtle."

"No." Her eyes drifted briefly over him before returning to her glass. "But so things are more fun when people pretend they are."

Before he could answer, Claire entered carrying an empty tray.

"There you are. Haley is about to start a blanket war."

Gloria stepped back smoothly, all warmth and innocence again.

"Then we must choose sides."

Claire narrowed her eyes at both of them.

"Why do I feel like I missed sothing?"

Gael picked up the wine bottle.

"Wine politics."

"That sounds exactly like sothing Gloria would start."

Gloria smiled brightly.

"And win."

From the living room, Haley called again.

"Gael!"

He looked between Gloria and Claire, then toward the chaos waiting outside the kitchen.

By the ti he walked back into the room, Haley had already dragged his pillows into the argunt like legal evidence.

The party continued around him.

Loud, warm, familiar.

But later that night, long after Gloria had returned to Jay's side and resud teasing Mitchell about his cardigan, Gael caught her looking toward the kitchen once.

Not at the room.

At him.

Only for a mont.

Then she smiled like nothing had happened and lifted her wine glass from across the room.
