The interview lasted almost ninety minutes.
Which imdiately terrified Haley.
"Long interviews are either really good or professionally catastrophic," she announced the second she got back to the house.
Alex looked up from the couch.
"Those are the only outcos."
"Thank you, Satan."
Haley dropped dramatically onto the living room couch inside Gael's house while everyone nearby instantly shifted attention toward her.
Apparently the entire family had been waiting for updates.
Subtlety truly did not survive around the Dunphys.
Claire erged from the kitchen first.
"How did it go?"
Haley pressed both hands over her face.
"I genuinely don't know."
"That sounds promising," Gloria replied from the patio doorway.
"No, seriously." Haley sat up again. "They asked actual branding questions."
Alex looked interested imdiately.
"What kind?"
And suddenly Haley lit up.
Not anxiety now.
Excitent.
She launched into the interview details rapidly:
campaign strategies,
audience targeting,
fashion influencers,
brand image discussions.
The more she talked, the more obvious it beca:
she'd handled herself well.
Very well.
Alex realized it first.
"You answered all of those?"
Haley blinked once.
"…Yeah?"
"That's impressive."
Haley stared at her suspiciously.
"You're being weirdly supportive lately."
"That's because you stopped saying 'vibes' every third sentence."
"Growth."
Haley wasn't performing confidence now.
She was replaying the conversation because she genuinely enjoyed it.
That changed everything.
Claire noticed too.
"You liked talking about the work."
The sentence ca softer than the others.
Haley looked toward her mother.
Then smiled slowly.
"Yeah."
Simple answer.
Still enough to visibly affect Claire for a second.
Because for years Haley approached school like obligation.
This was different.
Curiosity.
Investnt.
Pride.
Then Phil walked through the gate carrying grocery bags and imdiate emotional investnt.
"Did we secure corporate dominance?"
"That's not how internships work," Alex muttered.
Haley laughed despite herself.
Then her phone buzzed.
Everyone froze instantly.
Haley looked down at the screen.
The agency.
The room went silent enough to hear Phil accidentally crush a bag of chips.
Haley answered imdiately.
"Hi— yes, this is Haley."
Small pause.
Then:
"Oh."
Her entire expression changed.
Eyes widening.
Posture straightening.
Alex sat forward imdiately.
Claire stopped breathing entirely.
And Haley finally broke into a stunned smile.
"Seriously?"
That was enough.
Phil already started celebrating prematurely while Gloria grinned into her wine glass from the patio.
Then Haley laughed softly into the phone.
"Thank you so much."
A few seconds later she hung up.
Silence.
Then:
"I got it."
The entire house exploded.
Phil shouted triumphantly.
Luke nearly knocked over a chair.
Claire grabbed Haley instantly into a hug before she could even process the mont herself.
And Haley—
Haley looked overwheld.
Not because of the internship.
Because suddenly everyone around her looked proud in a way she wasn't used to.
Real pride.
Not relief.
Not surprise.
Pride.
Alex stood up next.
"You know this ans you're legally not allowed to be useless anymore."
Haley imdiately laughed.
"Oh my God, shut up."
Then she looked toward Gael across the room.
And the expression on her face hit differently than the others.
Because underneath the excitent lived sothing quieter:
validation.
Like part of her genuinely hadn't believed she could succeed at sothing aningful until now.
Gael crossed toward her and took her in a gentle hug while the rest of the room kept celebrating around them.
"You did it."
Simple words.
Still enough to make her eyes soften instantly.
Then Haley smiled slowly.
