Juliana Lancaster didn’t understand her daughter’s thoughts. Seeing her eating the New Year’s Eve dinner as if taking dicine, she couldn’t help but curiously ask, "Sophia, doesn’t mom’s cooking taste good?"
Sophia Hamilton snapped back to attention, curling her lips slightly, "No, it’s quite good, I’m just not very hungry."
"Saying you’re not hungry." Hearing this, Juliana couldn’t help but tease, "Look at you, working overti every day, not eating on ti, and now you’re so skinny. Your baby face used to be so pretty! And now, you look like a stick!"
"Mom, what do you know? This is the trend now! Haven’t you seen? The celebrities on TV all have this face shape." Sophia said with a smile, but Juliana wasn’t very agreeable, pursed her lips, and put a braised shrimp into Sophia’s bowl, saying, "Just because it’s trendy doesn’t an it looks good. These sharp faces are so overdone they’re tiring to look at!"
Juliana’s words made her daughter laugh, "Mom, how do you know everything? You even know about sharp faces and aesthetic fatigue!"
"Of course!" Juliana proudly raised her eyebrows and put a piece of braised pork into her own mouth, "I’m not out of touch!"
"No, no, mom, you’ve definitely caught the tail of the tis." Sophia said with a smile, and whatever discomfort she felt in her heart instantly disappeared.
While the mother and daughter were chatting and laughing, the doorbell rang. Juliana put her chopsticks down and was getting ready to stand up while mumbling, "Who could it be at this ti of night?"
"Mom, you keep eating, I’ll go check." Sophia put down her bowl and chopsticks and went to open the door. Before opening, she peeked through the peephole and saw the man standing there with quite a few gift boxes. She pursed her lips with pride and intentionally put on a face before opening the door to playfully ask, "What brings you here this late?"
"Auntie, I’m here for New Year’s Eve dinner, am I not too late?" Willow Lancaster walked in while taking off her shoes and raised her voice to ask inside. Hearing his voice, Juliana first frowned and then put down her bowl and chopsticks to get up.
"Evander’s here," ever since Violet Zimrman visited, Juliana hadn’t been as warm to Evander Lancaster as before, although she didn’t openly oppose, she frequently suggested her daughter break up with him in private.
The mismatch in family backgrounds, and with such a proud mother-in-law, she was worried her daughter might endure hardships marrying into that family.
"Auntie, I haven’t eaten yet." Evander Lancaster switched to slippers and ca in, reiterating while carrying the gift boxes, placing them on the coffee table, and directly carrying the plastic bags into the kitchen, "So friends gave so ingredients, I couldn’t be bothered to cook, so I brought them to you, Auntie, I’ll put them in the fridge."
Seeing Evander open the fridge so familiarly, Juliana sighed helplessly and walked over, "Let do it. Sophia, set an extra place for Evander."
Evander took off his down jacket and placed it on the sofa, then went to the dining table. He looked at the six dishes on the table, and without sitting down right away, turned to the mother-in-law putting ingredients in the fridge, saying, "Auntie, there are lobsters in there, fresh ones. Why don’t we cook them now, they won’t taste as good tomorrow."
"Lobsters? Why didn’t you say so earlier!" Before Juliana could speak, Sophia had already rushed to the fridge, peeking over her mother’s shoulder to check inside.
Juliana glanced at her, sighed with dissatisfaction, and took all the ingredients she had just put in back out.
"You two handle it, I’m not getting involved!"
"Auntie, you can go watch TV, Sophia and I will cook." Evander charmingly guided the mother-in-law to the living room sofa with a gentle hand on her shoulder.
With such a considerate son-in-law, even though Juliana wasn’t happy, she couldn’t say anything.
