The Sterling Residence
The guests departed, and The Sterling Family returned to tranquility. Mrs. Sterling went upstairs and knocked on the study door.
The sll of smoke hit her. She was surprised to see Mr. Sterling smoking at the desk. This man had been disciplined for years, abstaining from smoking and drinking, so why would he smoke alone in the study? She looked at the ashtray on the desk, which was filled with cigarette butts.
"Is there sothing you need?"
Through the smoke, Mr. Sterling saw Mrs. Sterling in front of him and asked lightly.
"Yes!"
Mrs. Sterling coughed lightly twice, pursed her lips, and smiled, "Felicity always said smoking is bad for your health."
"Yes!"
Mr. Sterling responded, snuffing out the cigarette in the ashtray, and then the room fell silent.
The smoke cleared, and Mrs. Sterling could clearly see Mr. Sterling’s still youthful face.
When she first t him, she was ten years old, visiting The Sterling Family with her family to pay respects to the elder Mr. and Mrs. Sterling. She stood among the flowers and saw a young boy in a white shirt catching her eye.
Back then, the flowers throughout the courtyard were no match for Simon Sterling’s smile.
Since then, Simon Sterling had been her dream.
This dream was so beautiful that whenever she recalled those tis, her heart was still filled with sweetness.
"I don’t understand why father brought soone back today!"
Mrs. Sterling returned to reality from her dream, thinking of tonight’s banquet. She felt stifled and particularly agitated.
"This so-called daughter of the elder brother, it seems she’s here for you."
"It seems The Sterling Family might not know peace in the future!"
Mrs. Sterling finished speaking and waited for a response from Mr. Sterling.
Mr. Sterling leaned against the back of the chair, his gaze indifferent, his lips slightly pursed, with a faint smile that made Mrs. Sterling’s heart unconsciously skip a beat.
She could never see through the thoughts of the Mr. Sterling she had loved for many years and who eventually beca her husband.
For instance, when he gave up on Claire Sullivan and married her, was it truly because he resented the Ford Family’s coercion, or had he genuinely compromised!
Over the years, he treated her well and took Felicity as his own daughter.
But, she began noticing changes in him four years ago.
Especially three months ago, when Serena Sullivan got into trouble, he beca much colder to her and Felicity.
If not for Jas Sterling’s final admission today, he might have truly accepted Serena Sullivan back.
No, he cannot! Allowing Wyatt Sterling to return was already her greatest concession.
"Why do you think The Sterling Family will not have peace?"
The cold voice pulled Mrs. Sterling’s thoughts back, and Mrs. Sterling smiled slowly and said, "You know she hates you!"
From Serena Sullivan’s eyes, it was evident she hated Simon Sterling and likely bore hatred for the entire Sterling Family.
"I’m not opposed to you acknowledging her."
Mrs. Sterling’s tone softened as she continued.
"If Felicity found out you have an illegitimate daughter, that..."
"And what would others say about you!"
Mrs. Sterling feared rumors and gossips. She couldn’t stand hearing a single bad word about herself.
She needed complints! To be praised! To be envied by everyone!
Simon Sterling accepting Serena Sullivan was sothing she could not accept! Absolutely not!
"I have not done anything to wrong you," Mr. Sterling replied calmly. He reached out, his fingers lightly tapping on the table rhythmically.
While so peoples’ tapping was aimless, his tapping began to have a rhythm.
It was a piano piece! Mrs. Sterling recognized it as a piano composition. In his youth, Simon Sterling, uninterested in taking over The Sterling Corporation, went to university to beco a piano teacher.
"Serena was my pre-marital daughter."
Mr. Sterling spoke again.
After marriage, he kept his promise, never visiting Solaria, nor engaging in any affairs.
"You know what I an!"
In public, although Mrs. Sterling appeared gentle and graceful, her temper was far from good. She understood Mr. Sterling’s aning and didn’t like his indifferent and casual manner in talking to her.
"I just don’t agree with her coming back!"
