Under the cover of night, the rain beca more wanton.

Vanessa Sterling, who had been sound asleep, was awakened by the sound of rain outside the window.

Feeling parched, she crawled out of bed, fetched a cup of water and drank it, then went downstairs to double-check the doors and windows.

Only the corridor light was on on the first floor, and the moonlight outside faintly seeped into the house through the glass door.

Holding the warm cup, Vanessa turned to head back upstairs when a beam of car headlights flashed across the glass door.

She paused montarily, hesitated, and walked back down the stairs.

Hunching her body, she pressed her face against the glass door and through the rain screen, saw Miles Sterling’s car park across the road.

Once the car turned off, the headlights dimd.

Amidst the rain curtain, only a tall, shadowy figure with an umbrella could be discerned.

Lingering briefly by the side of the car, Vanessa was unsure if he was looking in her direction.

After a little while, the shadow slipped into the private residence opposite.

Vanessa stood dazed by the door for a long ti before gathering her thoughts and heading back upstairs.

Sitting by the bed, she took out her phone to check the ti and realized it was past two at night.

Where did he go so late?

What brought him here?

Was it for work?

Before she could figure it out, Vanessa suddenly realized—why was she concerned with any of this?

As long as Miles Sterling doesn’t cause her trouble, that’s all that matters.

Thinking back to what the teaching assistant girl ntioned earlier today, an unusual feeling resurfaced in Vanessa’s heart.

She quickly drank a large mouthful of water, burrowed into her blanket, and shut her eyes, forcing herself to sleep.

Yet beneath the darkness before her eyes, her mind uncontrollably surged with thoughts about Miles Sterling.

Kidnapped by thugs and taken to the mountains, when her life was at risk, Miles Sterling had endangered himself to save her.

Whenever she recalled the scene from then, it filled her with fear; every ti she felt grateful for Miles Sterling’s appearance, she’d recall the things Miles Sterling did to her in the past, striving to erase any good he might have shown.

Previously, Bianca Jennings also ntioned that Miles Sterling’s actions weren’t solely dictated by his character.

More reasons stemd from his psychological distortions.

Bianca said it was a kind of illness that would be fine once treated.

But she never believed Miles Sterling would improve, nor did she ever acknowledge Miles Sterling’s changes.

Always using past wrongs to overshadow his present good.

Bianca also ntioned that it wasn’t just Miles Sterling with a psychological problem; Vanessa had one too.

Her ailnt’s root had been removed, but needed ti to heal.

Once she got past the hurdle in her heart, the illness would naturally heal.

Vanessa turned over; even the rain outside sounded noisy.

She opened her eyes, looking at the dark blue night light spilling through the window, watching raindrops gather on the glass and flow down.

Sleep seed disturbed by this rainy night, lying on a comfortable bed, yet tossing and turning, unable to sleep.

The next day, the drizzle continued.

Vanessa got up early, opened the window curtains, and imdiately saw the black sedan parked by the roadside.

Maybe he worked too late yesterday, so he’s catching up on sleep.

Changed clothes and went downstairs, grabbing an umbrella and heading to the hospital for the last day of her IV drip.

Vanessa sat alone on the sofa in the infusion area, looking at the couple seated opposite.

The girl, looking sickly, snuggled in the boy’s arms, while the boy patiently coaxed her to eat breakfast.

Vanessa retracted her gaze and looked out the window.

When sick, it seems even the heart becos fragile.

The solitude usually unfelt seed to erge entirely.
