Watching Joy walk away with those lipsticks without any suspicion, Audrey Sutton finally let out a long breath: "Everything’s ready now, we just need the final push, and we should be able to wrap this up soon."
Barry Barrett: "I think you have a knack for being a spy."
Audrey Sutton smiled and patted Barry Barrett on the shoulder, saying: "That’s because we work well together."
Barry Barrett: "My nerves wouldn’t hold up; if it were just now, I wouldn’t have been able to speak clearly."
Audrey Sutton: "I’m worried now, what if Director Quinne also gets involved in this, what would you do?"
Barry Barrett: "What do you an what would I do? I have nothing to do with him. If he really is that kind of dishonest person, then I definitely wouldn’t like him, and he should be dealt with accordingly."
Audrey Sutton teased with a smile: "Seems like you don’t like him that much."
Barry Barrett: "I like a lot of people, I like anyone who’s handso."
...
Audrey Sutton sat at her desk playing gas, waiting to get off work.
She heard two light knocks on the office’s glass door, and right from her perspective facing the door, she instinctively looked up, her eyes imdiately brightened, and a smile spread across her face.
Shane Warner softly said: "Let’s go ho."
Audrey Sutton imdiately put away her phone, grabbed the bag beside her desk, and jogged to Shane Warner’s side under the envious gazes of others, linking arms with him as they walked away side by side.
"How co you got off work so early today?"
"I see so people have wanted to leave early for a while. Weren’t you saying you were busy? Busy playing with your phone?"
Audrey Sutton gave a sly grin and followed him into the elevator: "Don’t ask so many questions for now; I’ll give you a big surprise later."
Shane Warner looked at her skeptically: "Just don’t cause any trouble."
Audrey Sutton: "Don’t worry, I won’t ss things up for you. You just always think I can’t do anything right, don’t you?"
Shane Warner responded bluntly: "Yes."
Audrey Sutton snorted: "Just wait and see."
In the evening, after seven, Shane Warner was downstairs watching the evening news, while Audrey Sutton was upstairs painting.
Though she said she was painting, she was actually distracted, staring at her phone.
Waiting for so valuable news from Seraphina Vaughn, but nothing ca; after work, only faint noises ca from Joy’s side, not a single word spoken, not even a phone call, just television sounds.
Audrey Sutton feared, what if Joy didn’t like the lipstick and stopped carrying it? What then?
The sa trick couldn’t be used twice.
After Shane Warner finished watching the news and ca upstairs, he saw Audrey Sutton biting her finger, staring at her phone with a face full of worry.
"What are you hiding from lately? You’ve seed off all day."
Audrey Sutton snapped back to reality upon hearing Shane Warner’s voice, looked at him, and replied: "I can’t tell you yet."
Shane Warner, pondering, walked over to her, "Did Vincent Warner tell you sothing again?"
Audrey Sutton shook her head: "No, I haven’t seen Mr. Warner. This thing doesn’t have much to do with you guys, but a little, so just don’t worry about it for now."
Shane Warner: "The more you say that, the more worried I get."
Audrey Sutton: "No need to worry, there won’t be any danger. I rely on my brain to do things, not on taking risks."
Shane Warner: "That makes even more worried; do you even have a brain?"
Audrey Sutton glared at him fiercely, then changed the topic, asking him: "By the way, has that TV series from your female classmate started airing? Did you watch it?"
Shane Warner showed obvious lack of interest and replied: "Not sure."
Audrey Sutton opened the video player on her computer, called Shane Warner over, and showed him the recomnded poster on the hopage, saying: "She is quite pretty, looks quite innocent too, but her acting is a bit stiff."
Shane Warner wasn’t sure if Audrey Sutton was being genuine or trying to fish for information, but with strong survival instincts, he said: "Not as pretty as you."
Audrey Sutton turned her head with a smile, looking at him, "I’ve discovered you’ve gotten smarter lately, huh?"
Shane Warner: "Just speaking the truth."
"Ding-dong——"
The phone on the desk rang, Audrey Sutton glanced at it. Seeing Shane Warner nearby, she didn’t pick up the phone imdiately, but gently pushed him, saying: "Go take a shower first."
Shane Warner’s eyes fell on the phone; it was obvious Audrey Sutton was hiding sothing from him, but from her reaction, it didn’t seem like anything she was particularly afraid for him to know, as long as it wasn’t an affair.
Seeing that Audrey Sutton didn’t want him to know, Shane Warner decided to just wait and see for that so-called "surprise" she promised.
After Shane Warner took his clothes and went into the bathroom, Audrey Sutton finally opened her phone and looked at the ssage from Seraphina Vaughn.
It was an audio file. Audrey Sutton found earphones in the drawer and clicked on the file...
First, there was a series of disjointed noises, then the sound of high heels clicking, the elevator opening, the door opening, and then Joy’s voice: "Why did you call here so late?"
Then a man’s voice, seemingly Director Armstrong’s: "I’m still hoping to make a windfall from the branch developnt."
"Are you nuts? The boss’s wife is in the departnt right now; how dare you take risks under her nose?"
Director Armstrong sighed: "I... I’m being pressured by my wife too. Her brother is getting married and wants to buy a house; she asked for money, and if I don’t have it, she’ll divorce ."
Joy: "Isn’t it better to cut off soone who’s so obsessed with her brother?"
Director Armstrong: "I’m mostly reluctant because of our two kids, and if I can spend so money to keep this family together, I think it’s worth it. So this ti we won’t do too much, don’t tell anyone, just the two of us, split fifty-fifty, and making a few hundred thousand won’t be a problem."
Audrey Sutton heard this and frowned slightly. Based on Director Armstrong’s ntion of "them," it was clear that the financial departnt’s corrupt individuals were more than just the two of them.
The earbuds went silent for a while, as if Joy was contemplating: "If we get caught, do you think we can walk away unscathed?"
Director Armstrong: "They’ve done it before; would they dare to report us? The more people sharing, the less we get."
Joy thought for a mont and said: "It’s too risky, and the timing isn’t right these days. At least wait until Audrey Sutton leaves first."
Director Armstrong insisted: "She’s just here to play around, as you’ve seen, she doesn’t understand anything; she’s just playing with her phone every day, not doing any real work."
Joy: "How about this, you do it alone, I’ll turn a blind eye as if I didn’t see anything. If it works out, it’s your gain. I’m getting by fine right now and don’t want to take such a big risk."
