Vanessa Sterling slowly closed her eyes again, as if exhausted, or perhaps unwilling to wake up...
During these three days, the hospital issued countless critical condition notices.
Each day, Miles Sterling could only gaze at Vanessa Sterling from afar through glass.
The doctor said she had awoken, but her consciousness was unclear, unable to respond when spoken to, spending most of her ti in a state of sedation.
In just three days, Miles Sterling had lost quite a bit of weight.
Not until today did Vanessa Sterling escape the danger and was transferred to a regular ward.
After setting up the instrunts, the attending doctor gave Miles Sterling a few words before leaving the ward with his assistant doctor and nurses.
This left Miles Sterling standing in front of the hospital bed, gazing at Vanessa Sterling lying there with her eyes closed.
Though her life had been saved after several days of ergency treatnt, Vanessa Sterling’s condition was still far from good, with many surgeries remaining, and moreover, the doctor said...her will to live was particularly weak.
The room resonated with the rhythmic sounds of the operating instrunts, and there was nothing else to be heard.
Miles Sterling looked down at Vanessa Sterling, unable to express the worry he felt for her during this ti.
"I know you’re awake," Miles Sterling uttered softly, breaking the silence in the ward, his voice hoarse and weary from days and nights of worry.
Vanessa Sterling lay motionless, showing no expression on her pale face, as if she hadn’t heard him speak.
Miles Sterling continued, "Didn’t you want to kill ? Yet here I am, standing perfectly fine; looking at how you are now, you might lose your chance."
"That guy ca looking for you, seems to really like you; these days I’ve been thinking, if you didn’t pull through, I’d let him go accompany you."
At this point, he noticed Vanessa Sterling’s eyelids slightly twitch, but she still didn’t open her eyes.
Miles Sterling’s words sounded light yet were full of threat.
He knew Vanessa Sterling wanted to end her life, and was well aware that she could care less about her own survival, but she most certainly didn’t want to implicate those around her.
He wasn’t sure how far things had gone between Vanessa Sterling and Jasper Jones, or how deep her feelings were for him, but he knew she wouldn’t want to see others getting hurt because of her.
Only by threatening her in this way did she have concerns, and dared not easily oppose him.
"It’s almost New Year," Miles Sterling said lightly.
Upon saying this, his gaze drifted towards the outside of the hospital bed, as if reminiscing.
When it ca to New Year, the happiest by far must have been the first year he brought Vanessa Sterling ho.
At that ti, Quentin Sterling had not yet appeared.
After picking her up off the street and bringing her ho, he gave her pretty and warm clothes, the best food, all kinds of toys she’d never seen before...
In that gloomy household, she naturally leaned on him more.
Though she was still timid, at least when she saw him return ho after school, she’d happily call him "brother."
It was as if she waited all day at ho, anticipating him finishing school to play with her.
Back then, Miles Sterling himself eagerly awaited returning ho to find her every day.
Teaching her to write her na on paper; watching cartoons together; teaching her to play computer gas...
Vanessa Sterling’s personality slowly brightened a bit, still shy around the rest of the family, yet quite relaxed in his presence.
That was until New Year’s Eve the following year, when Quentin Sterling returned from abroad.
Though Quentin Sterling was still considered a child at that ti, due to his seniority and inherently mature nature, even at a young age he had the deanor of an elder.
Miles Sterling’s dislike for Quentin Sterling seed to have sprouted from the mont he could rember.
Because Quentin Sterling had a good personality and excelled in studies, their grandfather held him in high regard, and everyone in the family praised him endlessly.
Therefore, Miles Sterling recalled from the ti he could rember, his parents would often compare him to Quentin Sterling.
Initially, he was urged to learn more from his second uncle, eventually scolded with disappointnt for not asuring up to Quentin Sterling in any way; the rebellious seed seed to be planted from a young age.
Being a rather slow-to-warm-up girl, Vanessa Sterling had gradually let down her guard after a long period of interaction.
So when Miles Sterling saw, on the first day of Quentin Sterling’s return, Vanessa sitting with Quentin, studying the new toys Quentin had bought her, he couldn’t explain why, but he felt particularly angry.
That night, when he pushed open Vanessa Sterling’s room door, he found her still on the bed, playing with the doll Quentin Sterling had bought.
A surge of anger erupted from his mind, he rushed over and snatched the doll from Vanessa’s hands, tearing it apart and throwing its pieces onto the floor.
He didn’t hear Vanessa Sterling make any noise, she neither cried nor fussed, but when he looked up, he found her body curled in fear, gazing at him with apprehension.
He slamd the door and left, not knowing what she thought in the room.
From then on, he no longer showed Vanessa Sterling a friendly face, even deliberately bullying her, using her as an outlet for his emotions.
Without his protection, the family’s servants also started to bully her, which he pretended not to notice.
Since that ti, she’d never called him "brother" again, nor had he seen a smile on her face.
Their relationship quietly changed...
He used to believe all was Quentin Sterling’s fault, but upon growing older, he realized it was likely all his own doing.
Yet, he didn’t know how to nd this relationship.
Just like at this mont, despite having countless things he wished to say to Vanessa Sterling, they all clogged in his throat.
Because he knew, Vanessa Sterling wouldn’t want to hear him speak, regardless of what he said, she’d only detest him more...
Miles Sterling left the ward and hired high-class nurses to care for her at the hospital.
He didn’t return ho for New Year’s Eve but rather walked alone on the bridge, gazing at the reflections of the lights on the river, his eyes slightly moist, a feeling of helplessness burdening his heart...
If everything could start over, would things turn out differently?
He didn’t know, nor did he fully comprehend why their relationship had gradually unfolded into its current state.
Clearly, he cared deeply for her, yet she constantly thought of escaping from him, even wishing for them both to go down together...
Miles Sterling took a deep breath, standing at the bridge’s edge, lighting the cigarette in his mouth as the cold night breeze blew.
"Uncle? Is that really you? Isn’t it a holiday today? Why are you here alone?"
At the sound of the voice, Miles turned, frowning even more upon seeing Jasmine Lucas.
Clearly in no mood to deal with anything, he glanced aside, averting his gaze, without uttering a word, he continued to look towards the river.
