But eventually, I realized I can’t even match a fraction of my son’s achievents. I am a failed father, exposing all my failures. Last year, I failed, completely devoid of any chance."

We just want everyone to live happily, why change due to past grievances?
If grandpa knows you’ve realized your mistakes, it’d make him happy. Over the years, he feared you didn’t understand, and although he wanted to tell you the truth, he couldn’t. Because if you haven’t figured it out yourself, his words would have worsened things, making you detest your family, believing your decision was right. He couldn’t selfishly let his words harm the whole family.
