Zhang Yichen knew all too well that his wife had done this on purpose, that she was avenging the years of abandonnt by his unwilling parents. But he had never expected that she would choose to reveal his parent’s scars in such a public manner, inviting ridicule and scorn from everyone.
In such a situation, he had no choice but to stand up for his wife, because she too had suffered much over the years. If he didn’t stand up for her now, then he would truly be dishonoring his own mother’s words, which he couldn’t bear. He didn’t want such things to happen to his wife, and this ti, no matter what, she had done it for his own good, so he would just help her out for the ti being.
That’s what he thought in his heart, but in the hearts of Xia Jing and Xiao Wei, they would think differently. They believed that their son and nephew had betrayed them.
Xiao Wei pulled Zhang Yichen aside to the stairwell to talk about the matter.
"Yichen, have you really not thought about how the words you just said might hurt your mother? Do you think what you’re doing is right? Even if he should never have abandoned you all those years ago, since you chose to forgive him, you shouldn’t use that against him now. All he wants now is for your father to wake up. He knows he was wrong, and he wants to stay by your father’s side to grow old together. Isn’t that enough?"
"I believe everyone here is smart enough to see that your wife’s action wasn’t as simple as it seed. Yet, you chose to be silent; you are indulging her and covering up for her. But did you ever think that the one getting hurt is your own parent’s hearts? Parents love their children imnsely, you know that, yet you still choose to hurt them. Do you really think that’s appropriate?"
"I know that over the years, you also know how your parents have lived. Even if you say out loud that you don’t care and don’t want to deal with them, in secret, you still investigated and found out where they’ve been and the hardships they’ve gone through. Your heart is made of flesh; you would feel pain seeing your parents like that, which doesn’t sit well within you, yet you still choose to silently stay in the background because you are conflicted, struggling, uncertain whether to forgive your parents or not."
"I believe if it weren’t for your father’s incident this ti, you wouldn’t have decided to forgive them. But now that you have forgiven them, why bother doing such a thing?"
"Yichen, let tell you this, it’s a good thing for a man to cherish his wife. But if a man, to pamper his wife, goes against his own parents, do you think that’s correct?"
"I also believe you are a man of integrity. You should have your responsibilities, and every action you take should be for the good of your family. But you shouldn’t aim to hurt your loved ones with your actions. To see your family suffer over and over again, that must make you feel conflicted and pained as well."
"Uncle, you know that I had no other choice but to do this. I cannot let such things happen to my mother and my wife. I don’t want them to start living together in our ho and start fighting imdiately. As you know, that would be really bad. I also realize that my wife only did what she did today to stand up for , and thus, I have to protect her. I can’t just stand by and enjoy what she does for while she is bullied by others."
"If you were a man, and you watched your wife being bullied, wouldn’t it hurt you? Wouldn’t you stand up for her?"
"You’re a man too, Uncle. If Auntie were in danger, or if soone pointed at her, wouldn’t you stand up to protect her? You know better than I do how much you and Auntie love each other, and the storms you have weathered together over the years..."
