I interviewed Mr. Winfield
“…Mr. Takumi. What is it that you want to ask?”
“Ah… Indeed. It is sothing that I ask everyone… Could you tell how it is that you ca to work for the duke?”
“I see… Where do I begin? My family has now worked as servants for several generations. My parents worked for the duke’s family, and that is how I was brought in.”
“For generations…”
Well, it’s not like the noble family would be gone in ten or twenty years. So such things were likely not unusual.
If Walter continued to work…perhaps his children may also work for this family.
“Yes. Ever since I can rember, my parents were working at the duke’s house. So it felt natural for to follow them.”
“I understand. Still, I suppose it wasn’t always the case with your family. You said several generations?”
“…As you are going to hire us, I would have thought all of this would have been known to you.”
“Well, a little. But Mr. Ekenhart wanted to keep a lot of things a surprise.”
This was half true and half false.
He had only told their ages and how they had worked.
After that, Claire and Sebastian had also told what they knew. Once I told Sebastian that Claire and Liza felt there was sothing strange about him, Sebastian talked to quite happily.
But I wanted him to think I knew very little, just so that I could catch him in a lie… I had not wanted to do such a thing, but Ms. Lyra had said it was necessary.
“I see… well, to be precise, it has been four generations. Back then, my family were nobles. From what I had heard, my great-grandfather was once a count.”
“A count..”
“But our house fell and now we have beco a family who serves.”
Sebastian had not told that it was his great-grandfather.
Well, it was a long ti ago, so he likely did not know.
He just knew of the forr title, and that there had been serious reasons for being stripped of it. Everything from tornting his people to treason against the king and plotting with foreign countries…
“I heard from my parents that after the family fell from grace, another noble took in my great-grandmother and made her work as a servant.”
That was certainly a dramatic turn of events.
Sebastian had said that since they had the right behavior, depending on their personality and abilities, they could be quite sought after as servants.
Even if their parents were criminals, the children were not treated badly…most of the ti.
“My great-grandmother and my grandparents dread of restoring the family, but…my parents have given up on that. Though, I am sure they still hope…”
“I see…”
“The duke, Lady Claire and the other servants are very kind to us. And so I have no…ambitions or regaining what was lost.”
Well, if I was told that my family was important over a hundred years ago, I doubt I’d care much about it either.
But then again, I noticed that Windfield told one lie just now.
Ms. Lyra noticed it as well, as she had heard from Sebastian. While pouring so tea, she nodded at .
Also, I saw that Claire and Sebastian also had serious expressions as they looked in through the window.
Leo and Liza looked the sa… I wished that she would stop waving her hand…
Well… I now realized that it would be difficult to believe Windfield if we continued to talk like this…
