Chen Xi stared at the table. At the impossible thing sitting there.

Her brows slowly knit together, lips parting just slightly as her thoughts tangled into knots she couldn’t undo.

'A coincidence?'

Her fingers curled under her chin as she leaned forward.

'A fateful encounter?'

Her eyes narrowed. Then widened.

'Or am I still dreaming?'

She blinked once. Twice.

Then her posture straightened abruptly, as if struck by lightning.

'Wait…'

Her hand slid from her chin to hover midair, trembling with realization.

'Have I sohow beco an oracle?!'

She sucked in a breath, eyes gleaming.

'Or… did I attain enlightennt in my sleep?'

Her gaze lifted slightly, as though already looking down at the world from so unseen peak.

A slow smile spread across her face.

'Doesn’t that make … a living legend?'

Her chin tilted up. Her shoulders squared.

The smile sharpened into sothing dangerously close to pride.

'Aren’t I amazing?'

Her thoughts spiraled higher, leaping from one absurd possibility to an even greater one, each more unbelievable than the last.

Completely unaware—

That she was not alone in stillness.

Xu Kai stood a few steps away, watching her. Silently.

His gaze traced every shift in her expression, the subtle furrow of concentration, the widening of her eyes, the flicker of shock, the bloom of awe… then more awe… then unmistakable pride.

He exhaled through his nose and shook his head faintly.

“She has lost it.”

He made no move to interrupt her.

Instead, he turned away and walked toward the table.

His steps were light. Unhurried. The kind that made no sound unless one listened for it, and Chen Xi was far too busy ascending to legendhood to notice.

He pulled out a chair and sat. The wood barely creaked.

Reaching for his chopsticks, he picked up a piece of chicken. Steam curled faintly from it.

Without hesitation, he brought it to his mouth. Chewed. Paused.

A smile tugged at his lips.

He always enjoyed his cooking.

It was simple, dependable. Sothing that never betrayed him. Whenever he ate food he made himself, sothing in him loosened, like a knot quietly unraveling.

A small, steady source of happiness.

He took another bite, slower this ti.

In his past life, that had been enough.

There had been no one else. No one to cook for him. No one to wait for him.

Growing up, the house had been quiet more often than not. His parents were rarely ho, and so he learned early, if he didn’t take care of himself, no one would.

Cooking. Cleaning. Washing.

He had done it all. Because he had to.

Even later, when he started working, nothing changed. His days were swallowed by work, his ti devoured whole. Relationships… never had the chance to take root.

Not because he couldn’t. But because there was simply no space for them.

Xu Kai’s smile softened, tinged with sothing quieter.

Stolen story; please report.

'Strange.'

Thinking about that life now, in this unfamiliar world… it didn’t feel as heavy as it once did.

If anything, it felt distant. Almost… reassuring.

He lifted another piece of chicken and ate.

Then paused. His brows drew together slightly.

He chewed again, slower.

He had eaten chicken more tis than he could count.

But—

This was different.

He picked up another piece.

The flavor was richer. Deeper. There was sothing else woven into it, sothing he couldn’t quite na.

A faint warmth spread across his tongue, then down his throat.

Like a current.

Like—

“Huh!”

The sharp sound cut through the room.

Chen Xi jolted, her body stiffening as if soone had yanked her back from the heavens.

Her head snapped toward the table. Toward him.

Xu Kai glanced up, completely unsurprised.

“Welco back to reality.”

Chen Xi blinked.

Once. Twice.

Her gaze moved from his face… to the food… back to his face… then back to the food again.

Her expression was blank for a mont, as if her mind had simply stopped.

Processing. Trying to catch up.

“Master…” she said slowly, her voice uncertain. “…are you eating?”

Xu Kai looked at her, then at the plate in front of him, then back at her again.

“It’s exactly as you are seeing,” he replied calmly. “Yes.”

Chen Xi froze.

Her entire face twisted into a single, silent question.

'How?'

Her brows furrowed deeper. Her lips pressed together.

Her eyes darted around the room, as if retracing invisible steps.

'How did he get there without noticing?'

'How did he start eating… and I didn’t hear a thing?'

'How did he go from standing right beside … to sitting there… halfway done with the food?'

Her head tilted slightly, like a machine struggling to compute.

'How did everything happen?'

She stared at him. Then at the plate. Then at him again.

And the more she looked—

The less sense it made.

And—

Chen Xi’s stunned silence snapped like a stretched thread.

“Why are you eating without ?!”

Her voice rang through the room, sharp and indignant. She took a step forward, eyes blazing, finger already half-raised in accusation.

Xu Kai didn’t even flinch.

He calmly set down his chopsticks, glanced at her, and spoke as if explaining sothing painfully obvious.

“I saw you thinking about sothing,” he said. “Or… well, trying to think. It was written all over your face.”

A faint pause.

“So I didn’t interrupt. Didn’t want to ruin your… daydream.” His lips twitched. “And, by the way, you spent quite a long ti.”

Chen Xi froze mid-step.

Her raised hand slowly lowered.

'That’s—'

She blinked, her anger faltering as realization crept in.

'So that’s what happened…'

For a brief mont, she looked almost embarrassed.

Then her chin lifted again.

“But that doesn’t change anything!” she declared, straightening her back and placing a hand on her hip. “It is improper to leave a guest standing while you eat first!”

Xu Kai rolled his eyes without hesitation.

“You’re not a guest.”

Chen Xi scoffed, the sound loud and dramatic.

“I may not be a guest to the house,” she shot back, leaning forward slightly, her finger now pointed directly at him, “but you cooked and invited to eat. That makes your dining guest. And as such, it is only proper for you to treat well!”

Her lips curved into a smug smile.

'Perfect. Let’s see how you counter that, Master.'

Xu Kai didn’t even need a second.

“Did I ever say I was proper?”

Chen Xi deflated instantly. Her shoulders dropped. Her mouth opened… then closed.

She had lost. Again.

“…Master, you are the worst.”

Xu Kai ignored her completely, picking his chopsticks back up as if she hadn’t spoken at all.

“Co eat,” he said casually. “Your food is getting cold.”

“It’s already cold.”

“It’s getting colder.”

Chen Xi clicked her tongue but didn’t argue further. Instead, she walked over and dropped into the seat across from him.

Then she saw it properly. Her eyes widened.

The table was filled, plate after plate, arranged in neat abundance. Steaming dishes, rich colors, the scent of seasoning hanging thick in the air.

For a mont, she just stared.

“Master…” she said slowly, her gaze sweeping across the spread. “How did you cook this much?”

Xu Kai shrugged lightly.

“I’ll admit, it took a while,” he said. “I had to get used to the kitchen first. Then I went through the cooking book to find als we had ingredients for. Since I couldn’t go out.”

Chen Xi humd thoughtfully, nodding along.

“Then let’s go out next ti!” she said suddenly, her tone brightening. She leaned forward, enthusiasm lighting up her face. “I can show you the path I usually take to the nearest city near Lud Forest. And around the city too!”

Xu Kai glanced at her, then gave a small nod.

“Sure. That would be great.”

Chen Xi smiled, satisfied, as if she had just accomplished sothing significant.

Then her attention snapped back to the food.

“Wow…”

She quickly wiped at the corner of her mouth before any drool could betray her, grabbed her chopsticks, and dove in.

A piece of chicken. A bite of rice.

She chewed. Slowly at first.

Then her eyes closed. Her shoulders relaxed, and a soft, almost blissful expression spread across her face as she savored the taste.

“Mhm… this is good,” she murmured, more to herself than anyone else.

Her chopsticks didn’t stop moving.

“Master, how did you cook sothing this good?” she asked, already reaching for another dish, her cheeks puffed slightly as she spoke through a mouthful.

Xu Kai watched her for a mont before answering.

“I told you,” he said. “I just followed the instructions in the cooking book. Nothing special.”

Chen Xi’s head snapped up.

“Nothing special?!” she repeated, incredulous. She pointed her chopsticks at the dishes. “This is from a mid-stage cooking book! Sure, the rice and chicken might be from the beginner section, but the rest aren’t!”

She shook her head, eyes shining.

“This is amazing!”

Xu Kai chuckled softly, leaning back slightly as he watched her devour the al.

A mont ago, she had been sulking.

Now—

She looked like soone who had forgotten the world existed beyond the table.

He didn’t mind. If anything, he felt… satisfied.

Then suddenly—

Chen Xi stopped.

Her chopsticks hovered mid-air. Her chewing slowed… then ceased.

“Master,” she said.

Her tone had changed.

Xu Kai’s gaze sharpened slightly.

“You said you made this food using the instructions from the cooking book?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Chen Xi lowered her chopsticks slowly, placing them against the edge of her bowl with deliberate care.

“But…” she began, her brows drawing together as her eyes locked onto him, “that’s impossible.”

The air shifted.

“Soone with no experience in cooking,” she continued, her voice quieter now but far more focused, “soone who doesn’t even know how to properly handle cooking tools… can’t just follow a book once and make sothing like this without mistakes.”

Xu Kai stilled.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“And earlier,” she added, leaning forward just a fraction, “when I asked you how you did it… you froze.”

Her gaze sharpened, piercing.

“Why?”
