Drawing the eyes on a dragon.
The eyes of the City God statue shone with a mysterious and brilliant golden light, and in the instant they opened, the entire aura of the City God Temple transford dramatically, sweeping away its previous dilapidation.
Outside, the dusk was dim, contrasting sharply with the vibrancy here, as a beam of golden light pierced a corner of the eaves, shooting straight up into the sky.
The golden light scattered in all directions, and under its refraction, this City God Temple finally looked like a true temple dedicated to the City God. Even though there was no incense burning in the incense burner, nor golden paper burning in the brazier, the saying goes that a mountain is not revered for its height but for the presence of an immortal. Thus, this clay statue of the City God now possessed a bit of divine essence.
The golden relics seed to form a bridge, connecting Chen Yi with the City God statue.
Chen Yi placed one hand on the City God statue when suddenly a gust of wind blew past. Ashes scattered on the ground, smoke rose thickly, Yin Tingxue coughed a few tis, and when the smoke subsided, a line of characters appeared in the ashes...
[By order of Emperor Dongyue Tianqi Ren Sheng, the decree states:]
It was an official appointnt docunt.
Yin Tingxue recognized the format; scholars receiving appointnts and officials receiving promotions would be given official docunts issued by the court. She was surprised for a mont, then looked at the string of words at the beginning.
Emperor Dongyue Tianqi Ren Sheng...
Isn't that the Taishan Mansion Lord who governs the underworld?
Chen Yi took a cursory glance. Naturally, he recognized it as a routine official appointnt docunt. The previous City God had been ousted, so the underworld issued a new docunt. Yet, although a new docunt arrived, due to improper enshrinent within the City God, there was no official appointnt, leaving behind an empty docunt.
As the docunt appeared, a voice suddenly ca to Chen Yi's ear.
"Young man, let this old woman take a look."
Whose voice could it be but that of the Saintess hidden within the cauldron?
"It's just an appointnt docunt for the City God. What's there to see?"
Chen Yi didn't use mana to block her; instead, he generously allowed this old Saintess's divine sense to explore the Square Land.
The appointnt docunt was in a smaller seal script, its contents laid bare: first praising one's virtues, then specifying the ti, extolling the emperor's rits, urging one not to forget the grace received. It was very similar to the appointnts issued by the human court. However, the last line's two words were extrely hard to understand, with obscure trajectories and difficult forms, resembling ancient script.
"Appointing... Wa City City God." The old Saintess whispered a few words, seeming to fall into so kind of contemplation.
"You can read the ancient script?" Chen Yi secretly transmitted to her.
The old Saintess stared at the two ancient characters, not hurriedly responding. After a long while, she spoke aningfully, "You're in trendous luck."
"Oh?"
"Wa City, Wa City, it's the 'Wa' of Nuwa," she paused, as if looking around this small town, "No wonder the Buddhist Sect spread eastward for thousands of years, and this small town could escape the cycle of reincarnation."
Ripples rose in Chen Yi's mind, undulating as the face of the Tushan Clan flashed across his thoughts.
The Tushan Clan was descended from Nuwa, thus called Tushan Nuwa. She was his mother, and through chance, he had co to this obscure little town, which turned out to be the legendary Wa City.
Or perhaps, was it truly by chance?
Thoughts flowed like water, ripples rising with the wind. Chen Yi gathered his emotions, preventing the old Saintess from noticing, while Yin Tingxue turned her head slightly, sneaking a glance at him.
Chen Yi feigned nonchalance as he asked, "Wa City, how co I've never heard of it?"
"The descendants of the Nuwa Clan nostalgically nad it so."
"The descendants of the Nuwa Clan... after Xia Qi slaughtered his mother?"
The old Saintess seed unaware of more, rely stating, "In ancient tis, who could clearly say what was what."
Chen Yi squinted his eyes slightly, asking no further.
As people age, they grow wiser, let alone this Saintess from the Demon Sect, who spoke half, concealed half, feigning ignorance. This tactic, Chen Yi saw through.
If Zhu E were present, convincing this Saintess to testify to his identity as the Bright Venerable wouldn't be difficult. Unfortunately, Zhu E was not present, and Chen Yi had no intention to reveal it prematurely, as he wasn't yet the Bright Venerable.
Chen Yi turned back, pondered briefly, then simply smiled. Using his fingers, he made a seal and without second thought signed his na on the docunt.
If there's no City God here, then I'll be the City God.
Beside him, Yin Tingxue saw him swiftly sign his na, and she wasn't surprised, knowing Chen Yi's nature was reckless and indifferent to formalities. She rely took another look at the official docunt on the ground.
[Chen Yi, being loyal and filial by nature, with a modest deanor, not interested in won, adhering to etiquette, with refined skills and music, not indulging in extravagance and pleasures, comprehending the wisdom of saints ancient and modern, suitable for the list of scholars. Appointing as Wa City City God. January 16th, the fifth year of the Yellow Dragon.]
Praising admirably,
but it all doesn't match.
Yin Tingxue thought critically in her heart.
Before her thoughts settled, Chen Yi turned his head and gave her a glance.
Yin Tingxue took two small steps back, pretending as if nothing had happened. She was just thinking, and she didn't say it aloud, and besides, she wasn't wrong.
Chen Yi sneered slightly, even without the Heavenly Eye open, not knowing what Yin Tingxue was thinking, but couldn't he guess her murmuring?
Just wait.
He turned away, not caring much for Yin Tingxue's slightly panicked gaze. This Little Fox had grown bolder, yet she grasped his soft spot so well that he couldn't find a reason to discipline her properly, even hesitant to exert himself when they were in bed.
With his na signed, the official docunt was completed, and each golden character floated up, rging into the City God statue.
The clay face of the City God began to subtly change, the visage remaining, yet the brows now bore more of Chen Yi's divine essence.
At this very mont,
five masses of black qi soared skyward from the town, intertwining, whistling, as the sky turned sullenly dark, with a fierce wind sweeping sand and stones.
Bang!
The rolling black qi charged straight in, smashing through the City God Temple's gate, landing before Chen Yi.
The Five Deities.
Each mass of black qi stood upright, with a chilling cold wind, and within the temple, a pervasive, inexplicable eerie green light spread forth.
Chen Yi squinted his eyes.
These visitors ant no good!
His hand had already moved toward the sword on his back.
However, the Five Deities acted first, almost as fast as lightning.
Thud!
All five masses of black qi knelt down in unison, imdiately bowing with a loud thump,
"Lord City God, we report!"
Chen Yi was taken aback.
Bang!
Another loud bow followed.
"Please, Officer, stand up for us!"
The five masses of black qi varied in size, age, and gender, resembling the Five Deities worshiped in the town. Together, they knocked their foreheads on the ground three tis in unison.
From top to bottom, viewing down, the Five Deities were all trembling, far from the appearance of scourges. Chen Yi initially thought that as town spirits, nourished by the incense, they didn't wish to see him assu the City God role, fearing they would lose their place, hence appearing in surprise to make their move, showing these town spirits who was the authority here.
But never did he expect that they ca to report!
"Ahem."
Chen Yi cleared his throat, put down the sword hilt, and tidied his sleeves, saying:
"Who are you in the hall, and what grievance do you wish to report?"
"We accuse the local townsfolk of having no respect for superiors, demanding excessively, and forcing the good into prostitution!"
The supposedly ferocious Five Deities, legendary for their notoriety, now cried out their grievances and injustices in tears.
