Damon

I left the castle, making my way out of Lady Palisa’s quarters and towards one of the smaller residential buildings. The walk back to my assigned room felt longer than it should have.

My mind kept circling back to that look. That single, brief glance Fresna’s Supre Alpha had directed at during the formal greeting in the courtyard.

I had been standing with Supre Alpha Palisa when the other one ca to welco her formally. I had thought Lady Palisa was terrifying, but this one was downright dangerous.

I had been ready to offer the usual diplomatic pleasantries, and as if his presence hadn’t been domineering enough, nothing could have prepared for the way his eyes had slid to for just a fraction of a second.

My heart had nearly died then and there as his cold look sent a horrifying chill straight through .

Goosebumps riddled my body and I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Then it had been gone. Lady Palisa noticed it and she just smiled, not addressing it as Fresna’s Supre Alpha returned his attention to her. He had greeted her beta and acted as if I didn’t exist at all.

I was relieved at that mont, but now!

I stood in the expansive hallway leading to my room. My fists balled up at my sides and my body trembled as I stifled the humiliation.

I was a whole Alpha, and he didn’t even grant a greeting. Not that I even wanted his acknowledgent, but for him to give that dirty look!

His icy eyes flashed at the back of my mind again and the chilling sensation that followed as my body rembered that mont made grit my teeth and rush to the room.

I had never t him in my entire life, what did I do to even deserve that look?!

Like he wanted dead!

No, not even that. Death implied emotion, passion, so kind of investnt in the act. What I had seen in those eyes had been sothing far more unsettling.

As if I were already dead and he was simply waiting for my corpse to realize it and fall over.

I pushed open the door to my quarters, still lost in thought. The rooms we had been assigned were spacious and well-appointed, decorated in the elegant style that seed to characterize everything in this castle. Large windows overlooked the courtyard through parted curtains.

Elena was there, pacing back and forth in front of the window. Her movents were sharp and agitated, her hands gesturing as she muttered sothing under her breath.

A part of shrivelled up and died.

’Not this again.’

Sothing was always bothering her.

I stifled an irritated groan and tried to sneak into the other room.

I had more important things to worry about.

"—absolutely unacceptable! The disrespect! Did you see the way she—Damon!"

Elena’s sharp voice finally penetrated my thoughts and I stopped to focus properly on her for the first ti since entering the room.

She had stopped pacing and was now standing with her hands on her hips, glaring at with obvious irritation.

"Have you heard a single word I’ve said?" she demanded.

I groaned internally. She had beco more interesting and happier ever since I made her Luna, and despite her outbursts from ti to ti, I was happy.

But I did not have the headspace to endure any of her tantrums.

"I am tired," I grumbled.

Her eyes flashed with annoyance. "I was telling you about what happened in the marketplace earlier! But apparently, that’s not important enough to warrant your attention."

I suppressed a sigh.

Elena’s tendency toward dramatics had been endearing before. Now it mostly just exhausted .

And for so strange reason, it seed to be getting worse.

"I am listening now," I said, leaning against the wall. At the very least, I hoped whatever nonsense she was about to say would take my mind off that embarrassing mont from before. "What happened?"

She resud her pacing, her movents becoming more animated as she spoke. "I was looking at jewellery. That beautiful pearl work when this disgusting Oga had the audacity to—"

"Elena. Skip to the relevant part."

She paused and her lips pursed strangely. Then she looked to the side of the room as if she was lost in thought.

"Hmm... I guess I should be happy. You are not jumping when I ntion her now."

What?

I went completely still, my hand freezing halfway to the armrest of the chair. For a mont, I couldn’t quite process what she had said.

"I thought you were referring to a different Oga," I murmured, looking at her.

I knew she had to be hiding sowhere here, whether or not she was going to be present for the summit, but for Elena to have seen her on our first day...

The mont she noticed the shift in my look, Elena’s expression shifted to sothing between disbelief and disgust. "What is wrong with you?"

I straightened, frowning. "What?"

"You can’t be serious. You were barely listening to and you were so tired. Now I ntion her, so life seems to have entered your eyes—"

"Don’t. Don’t start this. You knew I was tired and you still decided—"

She rolled her eyes. "Why did I even—ugh!" She kicked one of her sandals across the floor.

"You saw her on the streets of the market?" I pressed.

"I cannot believe you right now!" Elena’s voice had risen to a near-shriek. "Are you actually planning to go look for her? Here? Now?"

I faced her, confused, and just borderline slipping into anger. "No," I hissed. "What is wrong with you? I just needed the information. I need to understand how she got here and report to—"

"Oh, please!" She cut off with a harsh laugh. "Don’t pretend this is about politics or pack security. I can see it in your face, Damon. You want to see her."

I wanted to see her grovel at my feet. That was all.

How many tis did I need to spell this out for Elena?!

"This is ridiculous," she continued, her voice tight with barely controlled anger. "She is just one asly oga. A nobody. You are more obsessed with destroying her than our own relationship. You rejected her, rember? You chose !"

Fresna’s Supre Alpha’s eyes flashed in my mind and I collapsed onto the chair, cradling my temple with my fingers. A stabbing pain had shot through my head.

This was tiring...

"Damon!" She rushed to my side.

I closed my eyes, trying to steady myself. "I know I chose you," I said quietly.

"Then why—"

"You are not the one who was disrespected. I will not take this lying down."
