Violet

The two Supre Alphas stared at each other, the air crackling with barely contained aggression.

"Stop it. Just stop this!" I stepped away from the tree.

Were they seriously about to fight over ?

"Thank you for your suggestion, but I don’t want that either," I said to Rowan, ignoring the twinge of disappointnt in his eyes.

Kael let him go. He then stared at , his jaw working before his shoulders finally sagged slightly.

"You can’t go alone. It’s dangerous out there," he whispered.

"I know."

Rowan slightly frowned. "I agree with him—"

"I will be able to take care of myself," I clutched my chest, my lips tight as I faced them, resolute.

Kael looked like he wanted to argue further, but sothing in my expression stopped him.

"I still won’t let you go alone," he finally said, a resolute tone in his voice. "Wait here... please, don’t move," he told before facing Rowan. "Co with ."

Rowan blinked. "Uh?"

Kael grabbed his arm and started pulling him into the trees. "We need to talk. Now."

Rowan didn’t resist, but his eyes stayed on until Kael forcibly turned him around.

Their voices carried faintly the farther they drew away from . They spoke so sharply I could tell they were arguing until their voices grew fainter.

I stood alone in the moonlight, feeling strangely hollow.

Several minutes passed.

Then I felt it, the sudden absence of Rowan’s presence. One way or the other, Kael had made him leave.

When Kael returned, I noticed his presence was completely suppressed. He walked straight to , not stopping until he was close enough that I had to tilt my head back to et his eyes.

"I will let you go," he said, and each word seed to physically hurt him. "But you won’t go alone. That is non-negotiable." His hand ca up to cup my face and my chest tightened.

My eyes watered. "Kael—"

"I know you can handle yourself, but I’ll arrange for trusted wolves to accompany you."

The concern in his eyes made my heart ache. "Okay."

He nodded once, then his other hand ca up to fra my face. "Close your eyes."

"What—"

"Trust ."

I closed my eyes.

"Keep them closed," he murmured. "No matter what you sense or feel, do not open them until I tell you."

"Why—"

The ground disappeared beneath my feet.

I gasped as the sensation of falling seized , squeezing my eyes shut even tighter. But it didn’t quite feel like I was falling. More like sinking, as if the world had turned liquid. Even from behind my eyelids, it was exceedingly dark, and I could feel that darkness pressing in from all sides like it was a living thing.

Then I felt it.

Fur.

Soft, thick fur brushing against my entire body. It surrounded , warm and alive, moving in a way that felt protective. Almost like I was being embraced despite being in Kael’s arms.

His... was this his wolf?

The sensation lasted only seconds. Then, just as suddenly as that feeling engulfed , it was gone and my knees buckled as my feet found solid ground.

"You can open your eyes now."

I did.

And I imdiately staggered.

Dizziness washed over in waves and Kael’s hands steadied , gripping close to him.

"Are you okay? I have never used it to transport anyone before, but felt it might work since you’re my mate." He held to his chest. "Easy. It can be disorienting at first."

As my eyes adjusted, I took in our surroundings.

We were in a room. A small, luxurious room. Vines hung down from stone walls. Fine furniture dotted the room, and the silver moonlight filtered in through wide windows.

This wasn’t the Red Woods.

I straightened, stepping back a bit as he relaxed his hold on . "Where—where are we?"

The door burst open.

A young woman stood in the doorway, her eyes wide with shock as she took in Kael standing in the room. Then her gaze landed on before returning back to Kael.

"Lord Kael," she greeted, imdiately slightly dropping into a respectful bow. "I... we weren’t expecting..."

"I know." Kael’s voice was calm, authoritative.

Her face twisted with confusion. "My father is at the capital for the summit—"

"He is. Forgive for dropping by unannounced."

Her eyes widened in alarm and she shook her head. "No. Not at all, my Lord. You are welco anyti. Please, what can I help with?"

Kael glanced at , then back at her. "This is Violet. She will be staying here for a few days. See that she has everything she needs, and keep her presence here secret."

She swiftly nodded. "Of course, Supre Alpha. Right away."

She backed out of the room, still bowing, and disappeared down what I assud was a hallway, closing the door behind her.

I turned to Kael. "Where—"

"One of the packs near my territory’s border. The Alpha here is loyal. Trustworthy. His family will keep you safe until..." He paused, a forlorn look coming over his face. "Until you leave."

Guilt tore at from inside out. The moonlight painted his features, highlighting the pain etched into every line of his face.

Then, slowly, his hand lifted to my hair. His fingers slid through the strands, and for so strange reason, it felt like he was trying to morise its texture.

His other hand ca up to cup my cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear I hadn’t realized had fallen.

Then he leaned down to kiss .

His lips pressed against mine with heartbreaking gentleness, moving slowly, carefully, as if he were trying to morize every detail. As if this might be the last ti.

The thought sent a sharp pain through my chest.

I kissed him back, pouring everything I couldn’t say into it. That I was sorry. That I was grateful. That I was scared.

I think I tasted my tears in it.

When we finally pulled apart, his hands frad my face and he looked into my eyes one last ti before stepping away.

Shadows pooled beneath his feet. "I will be back soon... after sorting things out."

He then sunk into the shadows, disappearing the sa way we’d arrived.

I stood alone in the unfamiliar room with my racing thoughts and the uncomfortable realisation that my life had just gotten infinitely more complicated.
