Violet

He stopped just at the edge of the bed, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from him.

Close enough to see the muscle ticking in his jaw.

Close enough to notice the faint silver streaks in his white hair catching the moonlight.

And close enough that the pull, that strange, magnetic force that had been humming under my skin since I’d arrived, beca almost unbearable.

His eyes flashed for just a heartbeat, his wolf rising to the surface. I tore my eyes from his as the force inside surged in response, reaching for him like a living thing. Silver light flickered at my fingertips and pulsed underneath my skin. My eyes widened.

The last ti I had seen this was before dying.

He noticed. His gaze dropped to my hands, then slowly travelled back up to my face. Sothing dark and hungry moved through his expression before he forcibly got rid of it.

He frowned and took a step back, the room suddenly dropping in temperature.

"To think I would actually et one, and in this way for that matter," he grumbled.

His eyes burned a hole in my chest and I noticed he was staring at the pendant.

"What?"

"First things first, you need to get your lunar instinct under control." He touched his jaw, his eyes shifting to the window as he seed lost in thought. "But in your case, it would be a spirit."

His jaw ticked.

My heart still raced, but I stared at him, perplexed. "I don’t understand."

He looked at , and I imdiately shifted my gaze from his piercing eyes.

’Why are you like this?’

"You do not know about a lunar instinct?"

I looked back up at the tone of his voice to see a stern frown.

"No," I answered. "I have heard of it but..."

He stepped closer and the force within surged again, along with my racing heart. "I understand the discrimination, but you must have been a normal child before gaining a wolf rank. Were you not taught these things as a child?"

"I... my family never taught anything. I just..."

My words faltered and I ca to a slow realisation.

Co to think of it, I did not recall a mont in life where I had not been ostracised. And this was even before I discovered I was an Oga. I had always been weak as a child, but many children were like that too.

I frowned. That was strange. Did my parents know sothing I didn’t?

My head snapped up as I just registered the rest of his words. "What do you an you understand the discrimination?"

I could not believe this.

The hurt I felt bled into my voice, and it wasn’t just how I felt, but how he saw the issue. "It is barbaric and inhumane. You gain nothing from stripping people of their worth just because they are weak. They can have other uses—"

I stiffened. He stood right in front of , and I had walked right up to him without realising.

He seed stiff too, his eyes slightly wide in shock.

I gasped and imdiately stepped back. I collapsed back onto the edge of the bed, my hands shaking. My heart raced and the force inside thrashed, restless and unsettled before it slowly started to subside.

He briskly turned towards the door, his shoulders tense. He then froze, his hand still on the handle. It seed as if he was going to say sothing, but he didn’t turn around. His knuckles whitened against door knob, and for a long mont, he said nothing.

We both remained quiet.

And it disturbed that I knew why. The issue was not address. Neither of us wanted to. The word itself, did not leave any of our lips. As if we did not want to admit the big issue.

Opening the door, he finally spoke up, "I will send soone to attend to you. The other door leads to the washroom. Clean yourself up."

The door clicked shut behind him, and I was left alone in the suddenly too-quiet room.

I stood in front of the standing mirror in the washroom, barely recognizing myself. The bath had been heavenly. Warm water, scented with sothing floral, in an actual tub. These were things I had last seen as a child. I do not know who had prepared everything, or had Maren actually done all this shortly before I woke up?

The clothes folded on one of the slabs had fit surprisingly well. It was simple, but well made. Soft grey pants, and a cream long-sleeved vest that loosely hugged my fra. It was nothing elaborate, but leagues better than anything I had ever owned back ho.

My hair, still damp, fell in waves past my shoulders. I looked... different. Cleaner. I had scrubbed away days of travel dirt and sweat until my skin felt raw and new. Slightly flushed red from the friction, but I had not felt so clean in a long ti. And more importantly, I looked less like the broken oga from Shadowpine and more like soone who could actually belong here.

Almost.

Warm tears streaked down my face and I wiped at it, confused as to why I was crying.

Unable to keep watching myself weep, I crouched down to the floor, covering my face with my hands.

’Why did I have to go through all that?’

I should be angry. Not sad!

Why? Why? Why?

No sooner had grandmother died, did my family full on reject and cast aside. And Damon... as if it wasn’t enough to do the sa thing, he actually wanted dead. Hunted like an animal when he could have just left alone!

But sitting here in this beautiful room, in a territory that wasn’t my ho, and with a mate bond I never asked for.

I felt more lost than I ever had.

The sobs reduced, the tears faded, and my breathing steadied, but I still sat on that floor for a long ti, letting myself really feel everything I had been pushing down.

The fear. The exhaustion. The anger at everything that had been taken from .

I slowly raised my bloodshot eyes to the mirror.

Newfound power or not, I will never again let myself feel so low.

Ever.
